Yesterday, I watched new Athletic Director Whit Babcock win his 40-ish minute press conference on the future of the men's basketball program. That's the last time I'll prefix "new" to his title, even though his appointment as AD began on March 1st. After firing James Johnson, Whit's sleeves are already rolled as he searches for Virginia Tech's next basketball coach.
Even though he was engaging with the media, it felt as if he was speaking directly to the fans. Without divulging specifics and compromising the search, Whit did an excellent job of outlining the process, expectations, and possible outcomes. If you're considering investing in the program, i.e. donating to the Hokie Club, his candidness, forthrightness, and transparency has to make you feel better about stroking a check. The honesty from up top during this period of transition is refreshing.
The CliffsNotes are as follows:
Program's goal is to make the NCAA Tournament. There's not big money to be made by making the field of 68, but as Whit said, "If you're going to be in this conference, and as long as they're keeping score, we might as well win. That's more fun than losing."
The search may take a week, or likely last past the Final Four. Coaches on Tech's list are participating in post-season tournaments.
The next coach will ideally have head coaching experience. When asked what other qualities he was looking for, Whit mentioned being able to recruit a high caliber student athlete, knowledge of the I-95 corridor, player development, track record of success, having what it takes to be a scrapper and fighter to build the program, character, and competence.
Tech has a wish list, but identifying the pool of candidates who will truly accept the job if offered is a hard part of the search.
Tech could hire a proven high profile head coach, or secure an up-and-coming head coach.
"We are prepared, within reason, to invest for a favorable return. Sometimes you have to spend to acquire talent in this profession and we're prepared to do so if it's the right person and right fit. We won't spend frivolously, but we must be aggressive if this opportunity presents itself."
We won't hear from Whit again publicly until he's introducing the next head coach.
Whit made his decision to fire James Johnson after speaking with J.J. Sunday night (3/16). Whit made him aware of his decision Monday at 11:00 AM.
Whit's going to give the new coach time to get the program turned around.
If Tech can get to the top-half of the ACC it has a chance to dance. That's a realistic vision for a program in a fifteen team league full of tradition and hall of fame coaches. Whit called it a "stair step progression".
Selling points of the job are the $21 million practice facility, beautiful campus, great academics, fertile recruiting grounds nearby (DC / 757 / Richmond / Charlotte), commitment, and time from Whit to get the job done.
Dwindling attendance in Cassell played a small role, but wasn't a driving factor in JJ's dismissal.
The was no behind the scenes pressure to make a coaching change.
Whit's preferred style of play is, "One that puts the ball in the basket more than the other team puts it in there."
Whit praised the work J.J. did off the court but said, "This simply came down to wins and losses."
"I really like those guys that have earned their way up, that have had to scrap to get where they are, and then when they get to Virginia Tech they look at it and go, 'I get all this'."
"Do I feel pressure? Absolutely I feel pressure. To deliver to this group, and to this fan base success, and to let a guy go that's a first class gentleman, I feel a lot of pressure. But do I have confidence that we can do it, and that we have an attractive enough job to get somebody good, and that I have good help behind the scenes? Yes, yes I do."
"I do not have a coach in my hip pocket right now."

Comments
While I was very impressed with how Whit handled himself yesterday, and I'm excited about the future, a small part of me is thinking, "Boy, it's sad that a title that refers to the AD 'having a plan' is a good hook and enough of a surprise to get me to read this."
Why are you surprised?

I keep having this scene run through my head
"EXCELLENT!"....
With Whit this year and lefty last year, it amuses and kind of saddens me how excited we Hokie fans get in response to, let's be honest, what a lot of people would consider "basic competence for the job in which they are employed."
It's all relative, right?
1. I think that with Lefty, it righted a Hokie Nation visible issue that we had been pointing out for years. You might be right on this one about "competence".
2. I don't think we can say that Jim Weaver was incompetent - our books are in pretty good shape. With Whit, he replaces a respected AD whom was respected by some and despised by some. He had his plan and some did not agree with it. Now we have a younger AD whom we all think can relate to our younger alumni as well as the older and make VT relevant in things other than football (while of course maintaining football's focus - its the cash cow, right?) and address alumni donations so we can compete in a changing college sports environment.
Note: I didn't agree with Weaver's basketball coach hiring.
Yes, our books were good... but at what cost? We ROUTINELY let coaches go when they got a little bit of success and Jim balked at raising their salaries to be equitable to the level at which their teams were playing. Under Weaver we were in a constant rebuilding cycle throughout all sports because of our frugal ways, lest we forget we very nearly lost Frank Beamer to UNC because of our frugal ways of never wanting to open a checkbook.
The whole concept of recognizing when you have a great opportunity and doing the right thing and making it happen - its a world changer for VT athletics. Its a MASSIVE culture shock that will only benefit us long-term. Yes, cutting costs to keep the books clean is great, but sometimes you have to spend money to maximize future profits, and it sounds like Whit fully understands and embraces that concept, and it WILL pay off. This is the mindset that wins you championships, something we've never experiences in any team sport at any time in our history. From what we're seeing right now, there's absolutely no reason to think Whit won't deliver our first during his tenure.
Jim Weaver was a competent accountant. He kept us in the black and could build facilities while still managing debt service. That's probably half of the job. The other half of the job involves communication and public/fan relations. Jim Weaver was not competent at this, not even remotely close. His bungling of every aspect of the Seth Greenberg firing was a lesson plan on what not to do in every respect.
There's simply more to the job than keeping everything in the black and making sure Frank Beamer is happy - something he almost failed at!
I agree with everything you and Alum07 said and I welcome this future as you do. I just thought the statement about "basic competence" was a bit over the edge.
A new chapter is starting. We are seeing the start of a change in management culture which values what you mention more equally with the tactical operation aspects - and that is a very good thing! I think we should respect the positive aspects of the past that will allow Whit to employ his plan, while recognizing that it wasn't perfect (and where it wasn't perfect), so we don't repeat bad history. Overall summary statements can sometimes help lose that visibility.
I haven't seen an announcement of additional staff in the AD's department that came with Whit. When he says "We," is he referring to any new staff members with more hoops experience than....say....John Ballein or Sharon McCloskey? I don't see anyone I'm not familiar with on their website except Tim East, but he may have been here before....
"I do not have a coach in my hip pocket right now."
That's ADspeak for - "My search for a new bball coach is going full-bore, and was begun just about the same day I officially started work at Virginia Tech".
GG rest of ACC, GG
Something that would help our image AND recruiting would be to quit posting things like "Turkey legs" and "Gobbler Country." Imagine Notre Dame or UCLA using these concepts.
You must be new here.
Dude, you couldn't BUY a turkey leg right now. So a Dead Girlfriend and Bear Hug for you!
Now troll your way back to your usual site, because THIS IS GOBBLER COUNTRY!
Notre Dame and UCLA or not as good for their lack of Gobbler Country or Turkey Legs.
Well that wouldn't make much sense at all. What use does ND have for turkey legs?
Thanks and bye
First off, welcome to Bruin Country! Great post, have an a Leprechaun Leg.
*checks to see if Kevin Toliver committed*
BLASPHEMY!
Wow, that got this topic real...and FAST! I have to assume you bumped your head this morning, were given great sedatives to help you sleep, and accidentally broke the internet on your way to typing that. The same Notre Dame that picks a real person that's short with red hair, dresses them up in a lovely green outfit and perpetuates an imaginary little creature that you may have met while you were breaking the internet? Or the UCLA Bruins? WHEN THE HELL WAS THE LAST BEAR SITING IN LOS ANGELES THAT DOESNT INVOLVE A ZOO? Thanks for your contribution, and since you didn't want a leg, I will be happy to take one from you.
***Sorry I didn't have a GIF for that***
Very Appropriate. Thanks
I can take the criticism. My larger point is that I actually care about the perception of the University. And you may have noticed, not only do many recruits reject us for no reason other than these images, other schools use it as a negative recruiting tool. I guess no one has noticed our inability to attract 5-star recruits.
People use TheKeyPlay to negative recruit against VT?

Oh man, thats good stuff. "Sorry, coach, I really had my heart set on VT, but then I saw TheKeyPlay uses turkey legs, AND I JUST CANNOT STAND FOR THAT!"
I find it incredibly hard to believe that the names or policies of fan sites have anything to do with recruiting. If some recruit thinks about VT and says, "well, they've got some goofy people over there on that fan site..." he's probably not making a very rational decision, anyway. If the coaches can't close the deal on top talent, that's one thing. It's their job to sell both the University and their program. If someone decides against VT, I have to believe it's more about football itself than anything. We've also had a ton of success without a ton of 5* recruits, but that's a debate that's been rehashed a million times around here.
Also, UVA's fan site looks like it is straight out of 1995 and full of blathering nonsense. I guess we should incorporate that into the sales pitch...
I mean, if you want to nitpick, go after TechSideline and the overboard negativity, their constant bickering, and their politics board that is home to some of the most vile shit I've ever seen to the point where I'm honestly embarrassed that they use VT-centric names. Hey, I'll have no argument there.
But to blame TKP for a recruit turning us down? Really?
Talk about inventing a problem. Our current players and their families know about and read this site. We got firsthand information of that the other day, and we've seen it before during the season. If anything, TKP gives Hokie Nation a good name as a solid forum for VT fanatics to talk about their favorite topics. Anyone who thinks we're somehow a detriment to VT or player recruiting has had one too many Zimas.
If downvotes were Zimas, this guy is drunk out of his mind!
^^^^ The reason I left TSL ^^^^
Welcome.
Me too. Hey, better late than never.
I think the tiger tails that Clemson fans put on their cars look absolutely ridiculous. And yet, their fans clearly like them and they recruit just fine. Complete non-issue in my opinion.
I went to Clemson my freshman year, and nearly everything their fans do such as the tiger tails just seemed to me childish and girly, not to mention their campus is run down and when it's not 95 degrees it rains, yet they pull in 5 star recruits and top ten teams. It's the coaches willing to go after those types of players, being able to close, and risking getting screwed on National Signing Day--something Beamer has never been into.
Proximity to Charlotte and Atlanta certainly doesn't hurt either
So you mean it goes like this: hot-stuff Coach Banger meets with bigtime recruit, Billy Basketball and says, "Hey Billy, you gotta check this out. Those Hokies on that famous website www.thekeyplay.com are using "Turkey Legs" for Likes. Can you imagine that?" To which Billy responds, "Yeah,coool, I like that. Whada ya'll use?"
"Well, well, Zima bottles, of course."
I hear Notre Dame gives out shamrocks and UCLA gives out bear paws. SOMEONE INFORM THE FIVE STARS!
Glad you took time out of your day to make an account and make these comments. The responses have made my day end well.
Oh, and lastly... Kendall Fuller is a pretty good player. Five stars I believe by most services. That was just last year.
Burden of proof. It is on you.
I think he's been sent to purgatory and has lost the ability to post
But I was just starting to have fun....!
So, what school do you root for? Because it sure isn't VT.
Additionally, everyone here wants to thank you for the chance to give clever GIF replies and get turkey legs.
First of all, you're entitled to your opinion. I encourage you to back it up though. I don't generally agree with downvoting someone for disagreeing with their opinions, but when you come out with something so 'damning' and don't include solid evidence to back it up you're setting yourself up to be disliked.
Just out of curiosity, can you cite any specific examples of recruits openly rejecting VT solely because of 'Turkey Legs' and 'Gobbler Country' posts (although, to be fair, I don't think I ever saw 'Gobbler Country' used on this site before you brought it up) on this particular website?
I'm not sold on the idea that coaches at other schools browse TKP and snatch images which they plan to show recruits as a tool to recruit against us. Could you produce an image along with a hypothetical argument that a coach may use to sway a recruit away from us as an example?
I'd also be interested to know which 5* recruits we missed on because they saw this website and thought to themselves "Turkey Legs?! WTF? Gobbler Country? That sounds appalling. I don't want to be turned into a meme" and then decided to go to Alabama instead. Because 'Bama is exactly like VT, only without Turkey Legs, Gobbler Country, and an intelligent fan base. Those are really the only 3 differences I can think of.
Turkey Leg for you, I lost it at
Good thing you lost it at the end.
Yea it would've been a little difficult to find if it had been somewhere else. Luckily I found it quickly.
Thank you, thank you! Glad you liked that. I like to sneak 'lil jabs in at the end of long rants...I figure if someone is going to read the whole post they deserve a chuckle at the end.
Why did this guy join TKP if he feels so strongly about this topic?
Then we are at least doing better than We Must Ignite This Couch.
This is a real website. Thanks for the laugh.
Imaginary creatures, including fake dead girlfriends. A fake, dead girlfriend who was helped to hang on to every last inch of life by listening to their fight song. Yeah, he's right 'Turkey Legs' are much worse. GO HOKIES!!!!
I guess UCLA could be all "Touchy Feely" and use 'Bear Hugs', while Notre Dame could offer up some "Luck of the Irish" and use Leprechaun hats.
Or shamrocks or pots o' gold or shillelaghs or boxes of Lucky Charms.
So, I guess the moral of the story here is this:
You can generally get away with saying something somewhat sexist/rude/homophobic on the keyplay and survive to post another day. Some'll downvote you for it, it might start a heated discussion, but by and large, you'll be fine. But don't you dare talk smack about the Hokie bird, turkey legs, or anything to that nature, because shit will get real.
Hear, Hear!

I had a bad day at work and this made my day. I downvoted the same guy twice and TURKEY LEGGED EVERYONE ELSE
GOBBLER COUNTRY GOBBLER COUNTY GOBBLER COUNTRY TURKEY LEG
Fastest user removal in history
In Joe we trust!
I thought it was Foster. Hm.
I thought it was Moorehead.
We're a very trusting fanbase.
haha I just downvoted his other two posts (they're at the bottom of the threads)
I hate to feed the troll but ucla stole their color scheme and mascot from cal (look it up) and notre dame, well rudy was offsides damnit!
Let this be the start of the "Gobbler Turkey Country Leg" audible.
"Maroon 42, gobbler leg turkey leg. Gobbler country gobbler country. Outside outside. Orange, watch blitz. Turkey country. Maroon. Maroon. Gobble Gobble Bitches. Gobble Gobble Motherfucker. Gobble. Gobble. HIKE!"
Did that just happen? And who's the phantom up voter?
Wasn't me but i am assuming people gave him a turkey leg because he doesn't like them?
Obvious troll is obvious.
The toughest time to meet a troll is when you didn't notice the bridge they were living under.
In Whit I trust ! It has been along Time since VT's AD came forward with a plan to Hire a person of Quality. I think VT couldn't have found a better person to be the AD of the future. I say his first hire will be a reflection of what he wants for VT and the future...Winners on and off the playing field .
Finally some one that got back on topic
so anyways, whit's doing pretty well so far huh?
I guess the other schools will have another image to "use as a negative recruiting tool", Oh well I will take my chances
Dammit, you just cost us no less than 3 5* recruiticorns.
MY GOD, MAN... WHAT HAVE YOU DONE
I hear Recruiticorns taste like Turkey.
They poop BBQ sauce and their tears taste like gravy
Man, I never thought to let them poop.
Best series of comments ever.
I am only sad that the image I posted shows up as a big black box on the mobile version instead of people getting to see BamBam and his Turkey Leg.
Do they also urinate bourbon?
If someone could please photoshop Kam Chancellor in for Bam Bam or hitting someone with a turkey leg, that would be great.
I don't like downvoting people but that guy deserved it. I try to upvote anything I even remotely like since it's just like Facebook liking without all the sexual tension.
I joined this community because its overwhelming positivity and general fun/goofy attitude even though basketball isn't really a focus (I hope it will be after this new hire(hint: new basketball only writer hint hint)). If you are into college basketball like I am there's a 7 foot 6 inch center playing for UC Irvine on ESPN2.
I turned to the game and immediately saw him playing defense... and a little guard drove right by him for an easy layup.
He is a freshman though.
He shut out them singlehandedly until the first TV timeout. They were throwin up wild layups and missing terribly just because of his length forcing everyone to alter their shots.
So I turned too late then is what you're saying?
By the time you turned to the game it was too mainstream and not cool any more
void hipsterCheck(bool hipster, bool IsPapiWatchingTheGame)
{
if (IsPapiWatchingTheGame=true)
{
hipster = false;
}
else
{
hipster = true;
}
}
It has been 11 years since I wrote anything remotely resembling C++. smh
My only suggestion is to add a "&" before hipster to make sure the variable is passed by reference.
Instead of passing in hipster you should just make the return value a boolean. Then you are giving the compiler a chance to use return value optimization to eliminate (an admittedly very small) copy. Also it allows you to test on the function return value without having to declare a variable to hold the result.
</pushes up glasses>
I thought about doing that, and it would have been easier in retrospect.
I was just looking at how the code was written, and what the authors intent was. I basically always have my functions returning things. I just about never do void functions. Even if it's just returning true if everything went fine.
Oh yeah... pass by reference.
I feel like I'm letting Dr. Athanas down.
(no matter, I left CpE a long time ago)
Wait, without the sexual tension??
I take back all my upvotes.
I don't know why I found this so funny, but it's awesome and so accurate. Also, fun fact: A couple days ago a female friend left her laptop open (with Facebook up) in Owens. I realized that she is friends with Braxton Pfaff and before she could get back from refilling her drink, I had liked about a dozen random things on his timeline (on her account). I felt that was a healthy way of expressing my excitement about him entering the program.
Alright guys and gals let's get back to topic of original post, he said some things that he shouldn't have but he's entitled to his opinion. A simple down vote could have sufficed, I realize I may get some as well for this post, but LET'S move on!
Speaking of getting back to topic:
http://www.roanoke.com/sports/colleges/va_tech/mcfarling-virginia-tech-c...
AF, writes a good article interpreting Whit's comments as well. I have to say I agree. I think we'll see an up and comer that most have never heard of. I think he will try to build a program around and for that individual and attempt to create the bball version of FBeams, minus the alumni connection.
I like this approach.
Turkey leg
This thread is awesome in that we have a TKP troll whom we all immediately placed in the record Turkey Leg hole! That person owes us all so many Turkey Legs we could eat for weeks!
Trolls will never survive here. Another reason TKP is great - and the blog's design seems to help make this so... Trolls show up, and:
OK, back to our regularly scheduled channel....
That gif looks like it came from a disney movie gone bad...lol.
It's from the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer, a Marvel movie coming out later this year.
Technically it is a Disney movie since they own Marvel
Great pull from the next Marvel movie. Guardians of the Galaxy is a weird cast of characters, not sure what to expect from that movie but it should tie into the Avengers next movie so a must see.
I just thought it was totally nuts looking and shows how we guard this place from trolls - VICIOUSLY AND WITH MALICE!
In 2 comments he went from 11 turkey legs to -75...
Seriously....ouch!!
Well if you come in here trying to talk smack about turkey legs...

I just about lost it. That is awesome!! bwahahahahahaha!!!!
Great gif find, Archdale is outta here!
I'm building one of these.
It's so funny to see that hand with the scissors in the reflection and that the squirrel looks back just in time to realize something is askew...I'd upvote this multiple times if I could!
....and yet he STILL has more turkey legs than UVA had at its spring game....
I was going to correct you that you should say "fans at its spring game" then realized that they likely didn't have turkey legs either.
For the BRIEFEST of moments, I approached pitying them and the void of happiness that is their stadium.
So about Whit's plan.....
I think I'm gonna like it. He has displayed some decisiveness so far and that, to me, is a positive. He definitely says all of the right things...only time will tell.
He'll have a thorough search and hopefully make a great hire. Every coach has risk but I'm hoping for something similar to Thad Matta at Ohio State who moved from Butler or Xavier idk which
People are clearly ignoring it, based on the Buzz Williams thread. I'm liking Babcock more and more as time goes on though.
Wow that dude really riled up some people. Personally I think Whit has been a breathe of fresh air. I really believe he will get the right coach in here and I can't wait to see the results. I'll be patient.
On Weaver, I really think his illness played a bigger role in his final years, because some decisions just didn't make sense. Hopefully he gets well now.
scotty b's of the world unite
So...we talk about the AD and frugal...is there someone HIGHER than the AD that might have something to say about spending?
And is there someone higher than that?
Higher still.
not sure where...
There is none higher than Sam Rogers. Your point is invalid.
Well, the Buzz Williams hire & compensation package invalidates my original question anyway. May have already been decided before I asked the question, looking at the time of the post.
Rogers? Beamer? Why not have both!
