Updated with the Dayton win, Times corrected to show in correct order
I remember reading your post awhile back about potential candidates and saying to myself, "I like the sounds of the Southern Miss guy." What's your opinion on him?
Tyndall has done a bang up job every place he has been a head coach. His record speaks for himself. 20+ game winner in six out of nine seasons as a head coach. Post Season tournament in all six of those seasons. He had a bit of a rough start at Morehead State, starting 12-18. It is his only losing season as a head coach though. They were the regular season champions in the Conference USA this year based on their overall record (four teams tied at 13-3 in conference) They unfortunately lost to Louisiana Tech in the conference tournament semi-finals.
He employs a press defense, requiring opponents to work to get the ball up the entire length of the court, and a hard man to man defense in the half court. He then runs set plays on the offensive side of the ball to shorten the games.
My only concern on Tyndall is that he seems to rely too heavily on recruiting one location. Its a great location in New York City, but other than there and some foreign players, his rosters always have been from the NY area. I would like our new coach(es) to have a more well rounded recruiting approach if possible.
He would be an excellent hire though and likely wouldn't require us to break the bank to get him. His success in the NIT could make him a hotter commodity but I think still affordable.
If the biggest hang up on him is where he recruits I feel like that is something that is relatively easily fixed? Granted I have no idea how coaches build relationships with AAU or high school coaches, but if the winning is easy I feel like getting the kids from different areas shouldn't be too difficult.
Dan Hurley has been less than underwhelming at URI for his first two years there.
I have to wonder if semi-retired coaches like Al Skinner will be on Whit's chart. He is in his 60's now, and is the winning est coach at both URI and BC.
Since we can't turkey leg posts, I kinda want to just go to every ltrepeter2000 comment I see and give it a turkey leg.
Hear, Hear, Rob does a good job for us here on TKP.
I would love Tommy Amaker from Harvard. He has a prove. History of taking teams to the post season, has coached at a school similar to tech (Michigan) comes from the Coach K coaching tree, is from Virginia (falls church) and has proven himself at Harvard. Definitely my top choice.
You listed the big knock on Amaker though in your argument for him. He coached at Michigan for six years. His best finish in the BIG10 was tied for 3rd one year. This is back when the BIG10 was really ten teams. He finished 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th in the other years there. This is at a program with a huge basketball history that should have been a major plus for him to utilize in bringing in talent. He only made three NIT tournaments in his time there.
I agree he has done well at Harvard but I worry that its a big fish in a teeny tiny pond situation. Four straight conference championships and three straight NCAA tournament appearances. Lets look at the strength of schedule in all that though. This year Harvard is 0-1 against the top 25, same against 26-50, 2-0 against 51-100, 9-1 against 101-200, and 14-1 against 201+. Final tally: 213th schedule out of 345 teams
He is winning a ton of games but against what competition? The ACC has 6 teams in the Top 50, 3 more from 50-100. Half his ACC slate would give him games against the Top 100. This season Virginia Tech had the 82nd ranked schedule mainly due to the 163rd ranked OOC schedule we had.
Has he been successful with his defensive pressure early in the NCAA tourney over the last few years? Yes, but once he goes up against a team that can shoot or break his shell-man defense by driving the ball inside, they get mowed down.
I am not saying he wouldn't be a good coach, but I think that there are quite a few candidates I would prefer to see before they go with Amaker.
This is true. Really he only needs to compete with Princeton and sometimes Penn every year for a tournament bid. He has some pluses and minuses. Would be happy with him but I am more excited about what else is out there, as well.
edit: someone already commented on the BC link. whoops
Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe seems to think that Amaker to BC is a shoo-in. Amaker's wife is a Psych professor at Harvard, so makes sense that they would want to stay in that area.
That being said, Shaughnessy is a putz.
I happen to agree that this transition is much more likely though especially if the money is about equal. Allows his wife to work towards tenure at Harvard, which is no light work.
Updated with Harvard win over Cincinnati
Andy Kennedy coached Marshall Henderson. To me that's a big negative.
To me the he's handled Henderson is a huge plus. How many times have you heard his name this year? Yeah they weren't good, but he's the most controversial player in all of college basketball
The NMSU coach didn't play college or HS hoops. I find that fascinating.
My current top 7:
1 Buzz, 2Longeran, 3Cronin, 4mack, 5 Miller, 6Kellogg 7tyndall.
Not considered because unrealistic: Shaka, Marshall, Amaker. There is a good chance we couldn't get the top 3 on my list either.
all ltrepeter posts = turkey legs
loves him some basketball
No idea why, but this post made me create this:
Too funny.
Actually ranks top five sports: Football, baseball, hockey, basketball, soccer
Level of comfort talking: Baseball(stathead), soccer, basketball, hockey, football
Loves all things Hokies though and sports above just about everything but family and even that is spotty sometime.
If you are going to do it though take the time to do it right. I enjoy finding the information and am glad it helps out others while I do it. Helps to keep the brain from mush.
Top 5:
World Cup Soccer (Greatest sporting event ever created),
College Football (Greatest season and overall landscape),
... I'm sure there are others.
Level of comfort talking about:
College Football (I waste a good chunk of my life on saturdays in the fall. There are still leaves around from last fall)
World Cup Soccer (I don't really know much until it starts but I haven't missed a match in almost 12 years)
Amount of time talking would be a whole other list: College football, pro baseball, pro football, college basketball, DC Sports teams mainly because of the people around me. World cup is pretty amazing. One of my buddies at the last world cup in Europe ended up in Sports Illustrated as the "most dejected US fan" after the US was eliminated. We didn't find out about the photo until one of his family members saw it in the issue it was published in. I don't really recall a lot about the losses due to the drinking of German beer that was going on. Had planned to go to Brazil but my daughter's first birthday will be right smack in the middle. It was still a tough call.
I stopped following soccer when Pele retired.
I was in DC when DC United was really successful which played a large role in getting me back into the game. They won four of the first eight MLS championships. Been pretty dreadful the last few seasons though.
I went to the last US game versus Mexico in Columbus, Ohio. That was a crazy experience. US soccer fans are just a little nuts compared to some of their worldwide counterparts but against Mexico they lose their mind. We ended up winning 2-0 for the fifth straight world cup qualifier win at Columbus and all of those were 2-0 wins. There were plenty of guys with Dos A Cero t-shirts made up to rub in the score that always seems to happen there. It was also nice to see a soccer specific stadium and I hope DC can finalize the arrangement to get their similar stadium near Nats park. That place will be phenomenal and not having to go to RFK will be a big plus unto itself.
Yup. I was living in NOVA from '82-'00, huge soccer fan. Went to the MLS final where we won it against ... Colorado Rapids? Epic. Home game in the championship. Awesome
Hooray for baseball stat heads! I could talk baseball numbers for hours on end
I also recognize when something is fully handled such as Football with French and the others that are much more knowledgeable than I am and am happy to learn from it.
Right. Since everyone here knows more than I do about just about everything, I took on a horse persona and ran with it.
Don't you mean you were born a horse?
While games at Lane stadium were some of the most amazing times of my life, when it comes to a sports experience there it not much that compares to being at soccer game in Europe(Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena was my experience). There is just a non-stop involvement of fans for 90 minutes that makes you feel connected to every single person in the stadium.
I got to go to see Manchester United play Arsenal the 2005 FA Cup final at Millennium Stadium. That place was insane, and the game went the full 90 minutes without a score and then the entire 30 minutes of Extra time as well. It was the first time in like 100 years that an FA final had been a scoreless draw decided by penalty kicks. Arsenal pulled it out but Man U should have scored at least a half dozen goals in that game. Wayne Rooney had at least three chances that were essentially one on ones with the keeper and couldn't finish it.
COYG!
I'm jealous, one day I'm going to make it over there to see Arsenal play. Having seats near the Nordecke in Columbus is crazy, I can only imagine what it's like in the Emirates.
Columbus probably has about the second or third best supporters groups in the MLS. I would put Seattle and Portland ahead of them but it isn't by far. Barra Brava and The Screamin Eagles aren't too shabby for DC United either.
Yeah Columbus and DC are the only ones I've experienced in person, but you can tell from watching on TV that Seattle and Portland are setting the standard.
Columbus really took it to another level when their 3 supporters groups all combined into the Nordecke. The before and after of that change was incredible.
I can't see your graphic and probably won't be able to load the other thread. Have you considered U of Albany's coach? Hearing a lot about that team living hear in the area; they have had some success last few years. Team plays with passion.
I hadn't because his name hadn't come up but I will give him a look and let you know what I think.
ESPN is reporting sources that Jim Calhoun is showing some interest in the BC opening. I find that interesting
Wow, if they pull that hire in then we really need to hit a homerun.
ACC Coaches Career Wins/National Titles
Coach Boeheim (Syracuse) - 946 / 1
Coach K (Duke) - 910 / 4
Coach Calhoun (Potential BC) - 866 / 3
Coach Williams (UNC) - 723 / 2
Coach Pitino (Louisville)- 696 / 2
Coach Larranaga (Miami)- 519 / 0
Coach Hamilton (FSU) - 430 / 0
Coach Brey (ND)- 399 / 0
Coach Gottfried (NCSU) - 348 / 0
Coach Dixon (Pitt) - 288 / 0
Coach Brownell (Clemson)- 233 / 0
Coach Gregory (GT) - 215 / 0
Coach Bennett (UVA) - 171 / 0
6,744 wins / 12 National Titles
Boston College, Wake and Tech are hiring. Calhoun added just for effect on BC line.
Apparently the interest isn't mutual with Calhoun and BC.
Adding Steve Masiello to the watch list. Head coach of Manhattan who were even with Louisville until Luke Hancock pulled a Luke Hancock. Masiello is actually a Pitino disciple, having played for him at Kentucky then becoming an assistant for 6 years at Louisville. He's only been a head coach for three years but has two 20+ win seasons.
Pitino's coaching tree is impressive, and much better than Coach K's
Billy Donovan
