JH Bards Triumph NIL Collab Whiskeys

Anybody tried any of JH Bards' spirits? They just announced a partnership with Triumph to offer two different whiskeys (a bourbon and a maple?) and a portion of each purchase goes directly to Tech's NIL collective. I guess they've been in Kent Square on Draper for a handful of years but I haven't checked them out in any of my visits in the past four years... Thinking about snagging one for myself and another as a gift to my father.

I have tried them before, I think they are at Maroon Door and a few other restaurants as well. Pretty decent and local. Need to pick up a bottle or 2 for myself.

I mean, I guess that's important, but it should be noted this is going to the administrator's overhead and salaries, not the players directly

I don't know, but there could be rules against that. College athletes and alcohol endorsements are not ideal.

Of course, when it comes to college football, what are rules?

I'm curious on the taste. Is it good, or can you tell that its brand new?

Case in point, when Top of the Hill first came out with their whiskey out of Chapel Hill about 10 years ago, it was basically moonshine with a piece of oak in it, but that's because they wanted to start selling immediately rather than going through the process to age the first batch.

I take it JHB is rebranding some of their already existing selection to make this?

Well, it's straight so at least 2 years old. And apparently started in 2020 so might even be around 4 years old.

Not much other info I can find on it though. Always the worry they are using small barrels. I don't think I would blind buy it...

I could be wrong, but most small distillers don't actually make or age their own bourbon for a while. They will sometimes make their own un-aged spirits like Vodka and Gin. They partner with larger distributors to select a mash bill and blend that they like, and then market it as their label.

Having said that, JH Bards is quite tasty and they have a nice tasting room in downtown blacksburg at Kent Square.

You're generally pretty right, but there's a decent shift to them making their own stuff with how expensive it is to source stuff nowadays. MGP barrels used to be dirt cheap but even their new make is in high demand. It's labelled as Virginia Bourbon which legally means it's supposed to be from the state and they make a point that like 90% of the ingredients are locally sourced. Not a ton of distilleries pumping out excess stuff in Virginia so I wouldn't be surprised if they make it.

However, I also wouldn't be surprised to flip it around and see a 2 year age statement

Tangentially related, has anyone ever tried Bud Foster's Win Vodka? Anyone know how to buy it?

River City Distillery in Radford makes it. Looks like they have weird hours. Not sure is this is consistent. Their number is +1 540-200-8177

You WIN! Thank you, good sir! I'm not in the area much, but I followed them on twitter and now I'll know where to find it.

Foster says it's good. I do trust that man with just about anything, so it must be good.

They seem really sporadic on using Twitter. Looked like only three posts since July. Pretty weird if you are trying to build a customer base.
