"I don't like that," Brown said during his Monday press conference. "Those kids go to class. They practice every day. They doing all that. So when I seen that, when I heard that, I was really pissed about that. Like, don't nobody disrespect our band and do those things."
Love has since apologized...
"I would like to apologize to the Syracuse University community as well as my teammates and coaches for my actions at halftime of Saturday's game," Love wrote on X. "I understand the work that goes into halftime band performances, and it was not my intention to detract from that with my warmup. I am sorry for what happened and how it has reflected on our team and school."
To be clear, there are guidelines when a band should be allowed to play and how early a player can be put warming up, and Love was out before its generally accepted. He's in the wrong here, shouldn't have been allowed out that early and definitely shouldn't have been kicking directly into the band during their performance. It's a bad look on the school.

To be clear, their band is expected to be off the field with 7 minutes remaining on the halftime clock. They didn't get completely off the field until the 4 minute mark and were still on the edges until 1 minute remaining. Love was early but their band was also super late. Both were in the wrong. If Love had waited, he never would have gotten his warmups in but Pry made warmups irrelevant.
I don't buy anything about his kicking sparking them. That gives Marve a sacrificial goat and the only way Love was involved in the comeback is that Pry made too many dumb decisions to even get Love a shot at winning the game.
I don't think there's a lot of reason to defend him here. I hadn't seen the video until just now, he looks like a petulant asshole out there kicking through the band, walking through their formations and ignoring the folks asking him to stop doing dumb stuff. Glad he apologized, the idea that no one on the coaching staff told him to stop immediately actually annoys me a lot.
That being said, pretty sure it's not why we lost.
Rule Change from last year (3-2-1-c)
Field must be available no later than 3 minutes before second half kick. Staff member must accompany player if they enter field during halftime intermission. If player enters field before field is available they must be confined to team area and kicks must be into practice kicking net. All team personnel must be respectful of scheduled halftime activities.
I assume Pry and Babcock will receive a strongly worded letter from the ACC. There abre not listed penalties for this.
Rule change from last year.
If the ACC's actions lately are any indication, it's that pirate code is in effect...i.e. they're not so much rules as they are guidelines.
And really, more suggestions than guidelines.
Wish Pry would have let him kick at the end of regulation to send a more clear F you to Syracuse and their band.
back in HS, i'd probably have tried to catch the ball with my sousaphone, would have thought it was fun
apology appropriate
nbd
if the band has that much influence on the outcome of a game, we should never lose at home
There's not security to prevent this? He's allowed to just wonder on to the field alone?
Seems like Fran Brown is trying to get some off field points. Fine. The apology was fine too. Move along.
This is a non sour grapes story that needs to go away- asap.
absolutely agree. John Love kicking field goals at half time made our defense turn to wet store brand one ply??????????????????????????????????????????????????????? John Love kicking field goals at halftime made Brent Pry coach scared?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
He was out there with a couple junior members of the staff is my understanding. Saw a post that a band leader and a Hokies staffer had to be physically separated but all the focus is on Love kicking.
I was at the game. Love, Lowe and Moore were all practicing on the field. It was Moore that continued to kick after the 3 were run off. One of our coaches got into a screaming match on the sideline with someone from syracuse who was in a suit. Could've been the band director? The band was still on the field late into the halftime. Kids should have waited but band should have been off. So everyone is at fault. Crowd booed and picked on Love
If I am John Love watching the end of the 2nd quarter I am pissed as hell that Pry took the ball off my foot and want to get out there and let them rip at halftime.
Technically, he wasn't kicking into the band. He was kicking out of the band.
Love can do no wrong in my book.
Fuck Cuse
I'm not reading any of this. Love didn't spark shit. Tech blew it.
If the band was late getting off the field, that's a them problem.
Pros kick through cheerleading routines all the time.
Fuck 'Cuse
Yep, how many times have we seen this cautionary tale before? Visiting team messes with the last people on earth you want to disrespect: the band. Home team circles the wagon, and makes sure the visitors go home with their tails between their legs. It's like every football movie we've ever seen.
Seriously though, it sounds like the VT kickers were kind of dicks, and I'm glad they apologized. But goddamn, Fran Brown sounds like a clown, doesn't he?
"Those kids go to class. They practice every day. They doing all that." That doesn't actually seem like that much, to be perfectly honest. It sounds like he wanted to list a lot of impressive things, and quickly ran out of ideas. I mean, let's not make the band out to be Rudy or something.
"Like, don't nobody disrespect our band and do those things." This stupid quote makes me LOL on a loop.
Those kids go to class sounds like Cuse football players have never stepped in an academic building
Get yourself a marching band like the Highty Tighties circa 1990 and the opposing teams fucking kicker is the last of your worries. Done.
I was a HT in the '60s, and it definitely would not have gone well back then. But our leadership was far too disciplined for us to be on the field when we shouldn't have been.
Very true. We would have been where we were told too. Bet on that. However if there were people messing with our field show or formation, it would have been taken care of. The VT football team tried to interrupt us once. We took care of it. lol.
They knew better than to mess with us back in the day. A hundred pissed off cadets with all sorts of impromptu weapons in their hands weren't to be trifled with. In my two falls, though, nothing like that happened. And VMI was our principal rival. Man, that was a long time ago.
Gotta get those kicks in sometime. Sure won't be in regulation.
Poor guy's quads are probably atrophic at this point.
Meh.
Much ado about nothing.
Truth is, they adjusted to what we were doing defensively and Marve had no idea how to counter appropriately. That would have happened with or without their band.
Likelihood is, in the moment, the team and coaches for Syracuse had no idea that this even happened.
Just gives Coach "Budget Deion Sanders" something to crow about at a Presser.
God, its depressing that our 3rd year Staff can't beat someone like this...
