Lady Hokies take on the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Ally Tipoff for the second year in a row.
The Hokies come in having dispatched UNC Wlimington 99-57. For the majority of players it was a very different role they played for the Hokies if not the very first time they wore a Hokies uniform. Matilda Ekh though was in her normal spot and led this team in scoring.
Hokies fans got to see three freshman make their Hokies debut in Leila Wells, Kayl Peterson and Myah Hazelton. The trio contributed 19 points and 3 rebounds.
They will be facing off against a very experienced Hawkeye team. Three Seniors and two Juniors make up their starting five. They are learning to gel under a new head coach and without Caitlin Clark. They beat Northern Illinois University 91-73. There are definitely points to be had if they gave up 73 points to the Huskies. To give you an idea, Northern Illinois only scored 57 in a win over Louisiana in their second game.

Let's go
Hokies
Another good game and chance to see one of the top ACC teams just started on ESPN. #1 South Carolina plays #9 NC State in the first game of the Ally Tipoff.
A little late; but here are the tables I usually contribute:

Go Hokies! Really sad I wasnt able to go but will be watching from home!
Hey ltrepeter2000. Thanks for posting these for the non-football sports. It's one more thing that has me come here for my sports schedules instead of relying on lg corporate sites.
Iowa 8.5 favorites. O/U is 148.5. Neither team has played anybody yet. Both teams have blowout wins against lesser competition. Fouls may be a factor. Feurbach has averaged 4 fouls and Olsen 3 against weak teams.
Lot of mental mistakes. Can't give up multiple possessions early due to offensive fouls.
Micheaux getting early fouls and to the bench and not even out of the 1st Q
Ladies starting the game like the men on their outside shotsbeing ice cold.
39% and 22% from three isn't going to win many games.
Stremlow got away with a clear over the back that gave them a quick basket. Pretty ugly 1st Q with six turnovers and 2 for 9 shooting from outside.
Wenzel getting worked by Olson
Iowa is getting away with being physical under the basket. Could make for a long night
Agree but they have been called for three offensive fouls down there and four in paint on other end so not totally away.
Ugh already in double digit turnovers
CMD wants to play fast. So far in this one, the girls are playing a little too fast leading to sloppy turnovers. They are allowing too much dribble penetration into the lane leading to open looks for Iowa, and Iowa is being physical and stout on the perimeter limiting our halfcourt execution. Have to find a way to keep this to single digits at halftime
Ladies closed the 2Q really well. Was looking like a blowout but defense locked in last five minutes.
34-30 halftime.
Good recovery. I think if CMD wants to run wild this season, we will have some of these swings but if they can at least respond to being down, these games can at least be close and fun to watch
Great close out to the half. Hopefully we can get settled and keep up that defensive effort from the end of the half
Wenzel another offensive foul, Micheaux another foul too. Two starters to the bench in 3rd Q.
With Micheaux out Hokies having a hard time in the post. Wondering why we haven't seen White yet.
She was the last one off the bench in the pre-season scrimmage. From what I hear which has no solid source, she is a major project and extremely slow. Needs to lose weight and get into much better shape.
Tonight they needed a big body though, even slow, to counter the lane of Iowa
Very true, indeed.
Going to be a season-long theme, I believe.
From personal observation she is slow and really needs to hit the gym. The gym was obvious a destination for Baker and Suffern last offseason.
What an ugly 3 Q. Went from 4 point to 16 point deficit with foul trouble for Micheaux and Wenzel
Is the 3rd quarter issue department wide now?
Girls still showing some fight. Even with a loss, I think we learned a lot tonight. We will definitely struggle against teams with size, frontcourt depth and physical perimeter defense. Ekh has disappointed tonight. I think a starting backcourt with Wenzel and Suffren is more dangerous. Maybe CMD wants Ekh's outside shot, but she's a liability to me trying to handle the ball and defend quicker guards. Will be interesting to see how the backcourt looks as the season goes on. Like the promise of Nelson as well. I'm with the Lt. Curious why White hasn't seen the floor, especially with Micheaux in foul trouble.
Hokies definitely need a couple more POWER forwards. Iowa got smart and put two power forwards on the floor and have been able to create 2 on 1 opportunities in the paint. It gets exponentially worse when Micheaux goes to the bench.
One White did see the floor in the first game, but the other White did not.
71-52 final. Not as close as I thought it would be but 5 of 24 from outside will do that to you. Make five more and it's a two basket game.
Agree. Had some open looks that we didn't make. Took some questionable outside shots that were contested and early in the shot clock, but make a few of the open ones and it could be a different result. Something to build on.
They were rushing their outside shots pretty badly early...not getting squared up/balanced.
Opposing size will be a challenge for the season but they hustle and there's some talent there. They are fun to watch and they'll get better.
Clearly discombobulated much of the game and their size advantage down low was the real killer. Sadly that size down low will be a weakness for us all year. Likes the fight we showed and we had bursts of solid play even if we couldnt string too many together. Would like to see more actual offense.
Overall on par with what we expected this year and hope to grow.
Eke seemed as engaged in this game as Drones was against Clemson. Not going to beat Iowa like that.
This week has the potential to shape Hokies basketball for the next 4 or 5 years.
Hokies are in the final mix for
5 ๐ 2025 Power Forward Kaelyn Carroll - committing tomorrow. Several big name programs in the mix though.
4 ๐ 2025 Point Guard Ky'she Lunan which is between Hokies and NC State on Friday
4 ๐ Forward Naomi Benson which is between Hokies, Illinois and Michigan on Friday as well.
Coach Duffy already has three 4 ๐ 2025 commits so adding the above would most likely give her a top 5 class in 2025. I think Lunan and Benson are more likely than Carroll but would be great to sweep
Any tall girls in this group? Need taller than 6-2 players.
Carroll and Benson are both 6'2/6'3 depending on website.
Commit Kate Sears is 6'1/6'2. Amani Jenkins and Aniya Trent are both 6'3.
I know there is a severe lack of 6-4+ height players at all... but I am a little worried about duffy being too small ball to really compete if an opponent has true bigs.
Iowa's wide bodies had a field day against our 6-2 'bigs'. I see that as a likely theme for the year.
Yeah it's definitely the unavoidable reality for this year... I just hope that she has success on the trail bringing in some height
Thanks for the info.
Carroll to Kentucky....ugh.
Yeah Kenny flexing that bag unfortunately
What is this women's basketball player who has yet to play getting for the popularity of her "Name, Image, and Likeness"?
Benson to Illinois

Unfortunately sounds as if we are going 0 for 3 with Lunan going to Wolfpack later tonight barring a sudden change
0 for 3 confirmed. Lunan to NC State.
Ugh.
Illinois is hardly a WBB powerhouse. Feel like we should've won out on this one
