"Bud Foster is a terrible coach." Somebody actually said that to me Saturday night at a friend's get together. I wear my Hokies gear loud and proud everywhere I go, which naturally motivated this idiot to spew his VT hate at me. It was going fine until he uttered those six words. I don't really remember why he said he's a terrible coach because I stopped paying attention to him after he said that nonsense, but I couldn't believe someone who seemed so knowledgeable about football could actually think that. I walked away from the convo shortly after that because I was pissed.
So in honor of Bud Foster, the greatest defensive coordinator in college football, I'd like for everyone interested to share why you're grateful for Bud - kind of like a Bud Foster Thanksgiving. I'll start:
-The Lunch Pail mentality - it embodies our team and has been a trademark of one of the best defenses in the nation year in, year out.
-I'm very grateful he's still with us and never took a head coaching job anywhere else.
So why is everyone here grateful for the almighty Bud...

Comments
...Because he fathered Sam Rogers.
Because he took defense and football and badassly morphed it into what is known as FOSTERBALL.
Because I'm only ever concerned about the offense. Defense under Foster has never worried me.
You should send that kid this:
As to why Bud is awesome:

For those too lazy to click: I thought the kid right youre talking to right there played his n off, Foster said of Exum. You can quote me on that s too. Played his a off. Fought his a off.
Because....
and then this
This ^^^ should have a trillion turkey legs. It really made me laugh out loud bro. Nicely played.
Just brings a tear to my eyes that on a Monday I was able to come up with something as whitty as this!
Whitty...I like Whitty.
Bud embodies the old Hokie spirit which the team has lost the last few years( 5 to 10 yrs). Just a great coach!
The last 5-10 years may be a stretch...
I'd say last 3, maybe. At the longest.
Funny, I was just looking for a place to post this quote.
Just from watching his demeanor on the sideline you can see that Bud has a lot to do with that aspect of our team's culture.
Agree with the general theme. Every season you can get excited about the defense and the possibilities (especially now with 2 freshman lockdown corners). Its because of Bud and Torrian. These guys produce. They take what they get and improve them. No all coaching staffs can say that. If you look at the teams that are generally in the top 10-15 in team defense it generally will correspond to the class rankings of recruits. We typically OVERACHIEVE our class ranking based on our defensive ranking at the end of the season.
Still a little concerned that a team that had Mike Vick on campus still gets shredded by mobile Qb's, so I'm not blind. But in Foster I trust.
I see a stat much about the number of wins and the number of seasons with more than 10 wins.
Anybody have the stat with the number of #5 or 10 ranked defenses by VT in the Bud Foster Era.
Oh, and how many other defensive coordinators can somebody call, "their era" and not have people question the phrase?
Total Defense/Scoring Defense
2013 - 4th/11th
2012 - 18th/32nd
2011 - 10th/7th
2010 - 52nd/26th
2009 - 12th/9th
2008 - 7th/9th
2007 - 4th/3rd
2006 - 1st/1st
2005 - 1st/2nd

So that's 7 Top 5/ 2 Top 10 finishes. Nine years out of Fifteen.
The better one to look at:

2010 - 8th/4th

2001 - 2nd/2nd
2000 - 2nd/4th
1999 - 1st/1st
Foster only has three seasons, THREE SEASONS, where his Total Defense wasn't in the top 2 in either conference. The same is true for Scoring Defense.
What really impresses me is that almost every year the team is better ranked in scoring defense than total defense.
Just goes to show that in the past, every game we play we're plagued with watching 2 teams that cannot find the endzone.
One team because of Bud. The other team because of Stiney.
To make that even more impressive, when the offense turns the ball over and they get the ball deep in our territory (*cough* Glennon *cough*) holding them to a FG still counts against scoring D.
For the more visually oriented folks out there...
This, this is the reason why that guy at the party was a low information voter.
Even ESPN acknowledges Bud is one of the best in the business.
Because without Bud I honestly don't know what I would have been doing/watching most Saturdays and the occasional Thursday night.
Because if you ain't drinkin Bud Heavies, you're doing it wrong.
What about a Bud Foster? 50% Budweiser, 50% Fosters, with a dash of Wild Turkey 101.
Should have just laughed in his face
The UVA fan I work with has even admitted multiple times that Bud is the man.
Who was he a fan of?
You realize, of course, that he didn't think Bud Foster sucks. He was trying to get under your skin. Easy enough to brush that aside.
No I'm telling you, he legit thinks Bud sucks and was giving me "info" to back his claims. I'd give yall some of his supporting "info" but I blocked him out for five minutes after I could tell he really thought that.
I kept thinking in my head, "I should punch this guy" but I decided to just grab my corona and leave the room.
Well, sometimes you gotta punch a guy, what can I say?
Or kick a guy in the case you havent got any arms
Bud Foster is the best coordinator in college football. Imagine what's going to happen when Lefty has had enough recruiting cycles to play "his guys". We're going to be the tits.
TITS!
Someone just informed him of this guys's opinion
Totally inaccurate. Bud would use his fists.
He didn't deem the guy worthy or credible enough to use his fists.
That guy actually said that?
He creates top ten defense with 1*,2*,3* recruits. VT would have #1 defense every year with the 4* and 5* studs being wasted at other programs. Long live Bud!
Okay, for the third time in about 2 weeks, I have now run into Bud at lunch. Today was subway off south main.
You ran into Bud, and lived?
Did you happen to watch Bud eat at either of these times? I wonder if he inhales his food like an angry wolverine or does he eat it using perfect posture, a napkin tucked into his shirt, and with his pinkies sticking out?
(I'm sorry. It is getting to the part of the day were I get sleepy and my mind wanders into uncharted territories. Need caffeine!)
He did hold the door for a young woman who was getting ready to enter when he was leaving.
Was the door okay?
Sure since it was over her head it had nothing to worry about
Forget the door, is the Subway still there?!?
She's pregnant now. Congrats bud !
You better watch yourself. Next thing you know you'll run into Sam Rogers and I fear those consequences. You better stay home to be safe.
It doesn't matter. Rogers will find him.
Trying to avoid Sam Rogers is the best way to run into Sam Rogers.
I appreciate Bud's in-game adjustments. How many games have we watched him go in at half time and basically shut down the opposing offense in the second half? It's like watching a chess master or a brilliant field general. Sure the team has to execute his strategy, but boy, is it fun to watch him at work!
"I read your book, you beautiful bastard!"
OT: Little known fact - George C. Scott was born in Wise, VA.
Nice!!
...because I secretly want the D to intercept or fumble recover and if they don't score, hand it back to the opposing offense and tell 'em "try again" so the D can then, try again to score off the aforementioned interception or fumble recovery...
~rhinocerosv3
Because "He played his nuts off and you can quote me on that shit!" will always be the greatest question response ever
Bud does more with less than any Defensive Coordinator in college football!
