Haven't paid much attention to college ball today. I've been too excited about the possibility of Pry bringing on Eberflus as the new game clock coordinator. He'll fit right into our coaching culture.

With nothing to lose, Mississippi State is certainly letting it all out. Fake punt well back in their own territory and then going for it on 4th and 7. Taking the 7-3 lead.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

Given that we beat GIT 21-6, I think we should be in the playoffs.

Deposit whiskey, receive wisdom.

So here's the thing: 12 teams is too many. You can't find 12 deserving teams in any year except maybe 2007.

When we went from a 2 team playoff to a 4 team playoff, it was because there were deserving teams who got left out from the 2 team playoff. That wasn't really the case when we went to 12 teams - we did it because the first round games were boring and the NY 6 games were meaningless (and obviously money)

So anyways... you need to fill out the bracket with 12 teams... who else you gonna put in? Oregon, OSU, IU, PSu, Boise, SMU, Miami OR Clemson, B12 winner, SEC winner, ND... then you gotta find two more... Army? Then who?

Yep, totally agree. My dream scenario - which I know will not happen, I'm just dreaming - was 4, 16 team regional super conferences. 1 each in the northeast, southeast, midwest and west. None of this Rutgers and UCLA and Virginia Tech and Stanford are in the same conference. Each have 2 8 team divisions. At the end of the year, the division winners play each other and the winner gets an automatic bid to an 8 team playoffs. The other 4 are at-large bids but they have to be ranked in the top 10. And if the highest ranked team that is not in one of the super conferences is in the top 10, they have to be picked.

Oh well. What can you do?

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

This, and promo/relogation, and CFB will be the best it ever has been.

Three levels of two 16 team leagues. That's 128 teams. Boom. Easy.

All of a sudden every FSU game is must watch TV as they get relegated.

This is just such a wild, entitled take.

College football is a massive outlier in the world of team sports. Even now less than 1% of the field makes it to the postseason. That's still a crazy lean field. No other sport anywhere has such a small field.

I'm not sure if you're expecting 12 undefeated, flawless and unbeatable teams to make it to "the field", but using language like "deserving" is some pompous language.

Nobody says shit like that in sports. I get that our postseason has been so fucking stupid for so fucking long, but don't trash the creep of improvement.

Is an opinion that "99.9% of the college basketball teams are undeserving trash that should never play in the postseason?" taken seriously? Are they taking this very serious advice and slimming down on March Madness?

Shit, only like the one seeds ever win the damn thing. Why even hold a tournament? Just hand the top 1 seed a trophy every year and save us all the effort.

You do know that college football has far more upset potential per spread than college basketball games? Football is far less predictable, even considering the difference in scoring, than basketball.

We DON'T want to see that play out on a real sports field?

This will be the first season we actually see a real bracket with auto bids. Just because we've never had a 68-team playoff doesn't mean we need to mail it in and go back to voting the postseason away.

College football is neither boring nor predictable. And hopefully the last sport where we EVER used (past tense, fingers crossed) fucked up language like "deserving" to describe who gets handed an unearned tiara.

Tournaments. It's what sports do.

There's two different conversation happening here:

  1. How big should the playoff be?
  2. How should teams be selected?

If cfb is going to select over half of the post season field based on how they 'look', then they open themselves up to pageantry judgement. You can argue that's a feature or a bug, but it's reality.

Also, don't golf tournaments do this too? They don't advance a set number of people each round. They don't decide a required score before the round starts. Each round, the scores come in, and they find an arbitrary line where scores drop off.

In most years in college football, it's pretty easy to draw that line. Some years it's 1-2 teams, some years it's 3-4 teams, sometimes it's 6-8 teams. It's almost never 12 teams.

Texas is in. If UGA wins conference championship game they get in. If Tenn beats Vandy they are in. Then it's a question of Texas A&M, SCar, Ole Miss and Alabama

All I saw was UGA blantantly (comically) holding on every pass. Was egregious on their game-tying drive. Guess if they're not going to call it, why not? The number of cheap shots (targeting, punching HK after a tackle was obvious). But it's ACC refs so why not screw your own conference.

The three most aggregious calls

Not overturning what looked like a clear strip inside the 5 yard line. Georgia scored next play.

Calling Defensive PI on 4th and Goal on a tipped pass. Refused to review for the tip. Georgia scored on the next play.

Next play Vandy ain't at the 35 with a 15 yd unsportsmanlike.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Texas Tech is whooping up on the cousins. Is this the last of Neal Brown for real this time?

Also, anOSU - Michigan tied at halftime. I know I've said this before, but another loss has to be the end of Ryan Day.

I hope OSU loses. They don't deserve to be in the playoff. The Big Ten is so incredibly overrated.

SEC seems pretty overrated this year too. Which begs the question who is actually rated? I think this was a good year for parity in CFB and unfortunately it doesn't get reported that way nor will the CFP reflect that.

I think there's decent depth in the SEC, maybe not one elite team. But I think the ACC is underrated this year, pretty good depth. Even some of last year's bottom feeders are much better. But the Big Ten is just so overrated IMO. It's OSU and Oregon this year, and snake oil salesman James Franklin hanging around but can never beat OSU. Indiana was a good story for sure.

Gameday was talking this morning that two ACC teams should get in and I agree. But I think way too many SEC teams will get in as a result of all these quality losses.

"Quality" according to ESecPN?

Go Hokies!!

Should have put scare quotes around "quality losses"

ACC making a pretty good showing. GT took UGA to the wire last night, looks like Clemson is going to pull away from little Beams, Louisville is smacking Kentucky. Maybe it just doesn't mean more?

Miami has yet to win an ACC championship. Imagine telling ACC leadership that in 2003. Its beautiful.

Fire Whit.

Miami has only been in the ACC title game once.

Same as Duke, UVA and Pitt. One less than BC and Wake

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Miami has only scored 3 points, total, in their single ACC Championship appearance*

I hate Miami so much. I can't even enjoy this because the world's least deserving Clemson team just backed themselves into a game for an autobid.

How do they have an autobid? The top four seeds are reserved for the top four ranked conference champs. I don't see anything that says any particular conference champ gets an autobid.

There are five auto bids, but only the 4 highest ranked get the BYE.

Ah ok I'm reading the rules now. So five auto bids but only four auto byes? lol great system.

I certainly agree... I'm not a fan of expansion, or the way it played out. I understand why people like autobids, but this Clemson team is exactly the situation where they undermine the regular season. This Clemson team is 9-3, without a single win against a good team. Even the Pitt team they beat didn't have their QB for the game, and they needed a game winning drive to win that one late. Now all the variance that comes with a single game could let them into the playoff over several teams far more deserving with strong resumes, including the South Carolina team that beat them in Death Valley today.

I mean very similar to.the MLB postseason

3 auto bids for division champs, but only the top 2 get the bye

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Eric MacLain just now said if Clemson wins ACCCG they have auto bid. Lol no they don't.

There's still a lot to be sorted out. They certainly didn't do themselves any favors by losing to USC.

The winner of the ACC championship game is going to get in the playoffs this year. Question is do they put the loser in.

I think SMU should be in either way. Clemson should only get in if they beat SMU

Cyclones! 10-2 and needing BYU to win for a trip to the championship. I thought they were in with a win, but apparently they need BYU to win as well.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

Mack Brown losing his final game feels like some petty vengeance for Frank's last home game being spoiled too.

Brown whining about "this isn't the game I signed up for" is classic UNC.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

How are we thinking the playoff shakes out?

It looks like there is really only 1 spot up for grabs next weekend... It's Clemson's if they win it. If SMU wins, then who gets the 12th spot?

Locks:

Big Ten (4) - Oregon, Ohio State, Penn State, Indiana
SEC (3) - Texas, Georgia, Tennessee
ACC (1) - SMU
Notre Dame
MWC Champ- Boise St or UNLV
Big XII Champ- ISU or ASU

Win and In:

Clemson

Bubble:

BYU
Miami
Alabama
Big XII Loser
Boise St (if loss)

From your bubble list, Bama has the best resume by far. I think South Carolina will factor into the bubble convo though. Maybe Ole Miss, but I feel they are more outside looking in.

Have to look at the standings in detail, but off the top of my head, my guess is UNLV does not make it even with a win. After all, we need to make sure Alabama gets in no matter what. Also skeptical SMU gets in if they lose, though they would (presumably) be replaced by Clemson. SMU is very bubble-ish to me if they lose. Can't imagine BYU, Colorado or Big XII loser making it in.

By the way, just went to look at the final standings and this pops up on the feed:

"Why Finebaum views Miami as a fraud after Syracuse loss"

The answer is, of course, because Miami is in the ACC and we have to get Alabama in. No need to read further. If Miami was in the SEC, it was because Syracuse is really good and underrated, so a quality loss and Miami is even more deserving.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

I really don't think that is the case, and Alabama has wins over Georgia, South Carolina, Mizzou, and LSU. MIami's best win is Florida? There's no doubt about the SEC getting preferential treatment along with the B1G, but Miami's resume is really not impressive at 10-2 and a lack of quality wins, certainly compared to Alabama's wins. You can maybe argue Florida over LSU given they beat them head to head, but Georgia and South Carolina are two wins that are clearly better than Miami's best win.

Oh yes. Sorry, should clarify. I agree that Miami was vastly over-rated. My point was that if Miami was in the SEC, he would not have said that publicly.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

Will be interesting to see how far Miami falls after the loss. Likely it will be conveniently 13th to move Alabama up into top 12 which is utterly ridiculous with their losses. There are too many teams with only one or two losses to have a three loss team in but we all know how it works.

Colorado is not a bubble team. Not even in their conference championship. Don't mind me while I celebrate.

Don't see them putting Boise St in if they lose the MWC unfortunately. If they don't I want Boise to play Colorado in a bowl.

Any bubbles will go the SEC way unfortunately.

Miami loses to now ranked #23 9-3 Syracuse by 4 and get dropped eight spots in rankings.

EDIT as Nate23VT reminded me the top 5 conference winners get in, not just the top 4. Adjusted my predictions below.

So, coming back to the original question of who I am thinking will be picked - not who I want or think should be picked, but who will be - I'm guessing this:

0 or 1 AAU - probably 0 as I doubt Army or Tulane is ahead of UNLV if they win and they are definitely below Boise State
1 ACC - SMU-Clemson winner
4 Big 10 - Oregon, Penn State, Ohio State, Indiana
1 Big 12 - Arizona State-Iowa State winner
1 Independent - Notre Dame
1 or 0 MWC - Boise State if they win and probably UNLV if they win
4 SEC - Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama

No way a conference should have three teams with 0 or 1 total losses. Just shows how broken these super conferences are. It would have been four if Ohio State hadn't shit the bed against a 6-5 team.

It really worked out perfectly for the B1G with the schedules to get four teams in easily. It's unbelievable how few of those top teams actually played each other.

5 conference champions get auto-bids. If UNLV wins the only other possibility is Tulane if they beat Army to win the AAC. But even then I think UNLV would jump Tulane due to the quality win over Boise.

Oh sorry. I thought it was just the top 4 got auto bids. Let me adjust.

I don't really understand how Indiana can be seen as a lock but not SMU? The resumes seem very similar to me.

They both had weak schedules, but I think SMU had some tougher opponents overall, and their lone loss looks a lot better now. Indiana just got smacked around by Ohio St. which surprised nobody. I think it's just a matter of IU getting overrated at just the right time to minimize their slide in the rankings.

I agree, Indiana hasn't played ANYONE in wins. The problem is if SMU loses Conf Championship they will have two losses to Indiana's one.

Indiana has one win over a team with a winning record. Wouldn't even have that if Ohio State beat Michigan.

SMU has wins over 5 teams with winning records and only loss is by three to a ranked team.

Indiana
FIU 4-8
WIU 4-8
UCLA 5-7
Charlotte 5-7
Maryland 4-8
Northwestern 4-8
Nebraska 6-6
Washington 6-6
Michigan State 5-7
Michigan 7-5
Lost to Ohio State 38-15
Purdue 1-11

SMU
Nevada 3-10
Houston Christian 5-7
Lost to #19 BYU 18-15
TCU 8-4
FSU 2-12
Louisville 8-4
Stanford 3-9
Duke 9-3
Pitt 7-5
BC 7-5
UVA 5-7
Cal 6-6

Indiana = Big 10.
SMU = ACC.

And if SMU loses to Clemson, they have 2 losses to Indiana's 1. But I'm focused more on the Committee using the following thought process:

Being in SEC > Being in Big 10 > what teams actually did on the field this season.

Hopefully I am wrong.
