SI: Marve being considered for NFL jobs

And this is where we throw our head back and laugh. His agent must be desperate to try and leak this. And Sports Illustrated isn't what it used to be.

maaaaaybe as a position coach

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

*assistant to the position coach

But I mean if there's an assistant position coach or analyst job in the NFL for Justin Hamilton, why not for Marve? I would say they're about equally qualified

Really speaks volumes that Fuente is still sitting on the couch, then.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

That may be because he wants to be.

Let's be honest, his kids are in the fun ages. He has enough money to sit and live on the investments in a comfortable manner. He can wait and go back for the right coordinator position in a year or so.

But, the game might move on from him and he might be stuck retired.

From what I gather, he has a self-employed, consulting-type role like Bud. Lives in a suburb outside of Dallas - my assumption is that he wants to stay in one place until his kids go to college. I vaguely remember him helping out the TCU coaching staff during their BCS run.

The only team I'd think he would come back for is SMU or another Dallas-based role.

I vaguely remember him helping out the TCU coaching staff during their BCS run.

Yea... he was the OC.

Lol the 2023 BCS run

Ohh cfp haha. BCS has been dead since 2013.

potato tomato

Probably confusing because the BCS was the predecessor to the playoffs. I'm assuming you're referring to their 2022 season they wound up 13-2 playoff run. But Fuente was hired as an analyst at Indiana in 2023, with no other analyst jobs listed. I think he was still living in Blacksburg in 2022 I thought I had read.

Nah, they left for Texas fast.

really wish that garbage had a different name than SI, but I'm an old school fart.

Getting to be an old school fart but 100 hundred percent agree - you can't completely destroy an outfit like SI and then try to rep the beloved brand. Just humiliating

If you're reading this mail me West End London Broil pls

honestly, if he leaves that would be the best thing to happen to Pry - gets to reset his defense without having to fire someone. I'd be only a little bit disappointed if it happens this way - I'd like to know that Pry can fire someone when he needs to.

I don't think Marve is seriously in contention for any NFL jobs - certainly not as a DC and unlikely as a LB coach - maybe he'll be an analyst or something? I'll believe it when I see it

Onward and upward

I'd be only a little bit disappointed if it happens this way - I'd like to know that Pry can fire someone when he needs to.

Don't assume this isn't a firing... I know pry is very much not Nick Saban, but Nick Saban was the king of rehoming coaches without firing them. Pry might be doing something similar.

I was wondering if it might be a preemptive move on Marve's part in anticipation of something, or maybe Pry had the hard conversation with him directly without making an announcement - and to your point, may be helping him find his next spot.

Thank you for catching the reference. A guilty pleasure for sure. "Ursala! Ursala!"

This tells me that Pry just absolutely does not want to fire his buddies. More concerned with soft landing spots than making necessary staff moves. VT football - the more things change the more they remain the same.

No one wants to fire their buddy, but when you have to, you want to make sure they're okay, cause they're going to be your buddy longer than you have the job. That doesn't mean he won't fire his buddy.

I'm choosing to believe that this was a ninja move by Pry:

  • He push out an under achieving DC
  • But, it will 'appear' that said DC left for greener pastures
  • And this make VT look more appealing to future candidates (because they can use it as a spring board for their career)

This has to be his agent leaking this which would point to him being canned, right? Right???

If it is anything else, SI needs to fire the AI that wrote it.

The chain of custody on this info seems pretty weak to me, so I'm not getting too fired up.

But yeah, if legit this is, at minimum, an agent having some inkling that things could go sideways for his client and trying to smoke out other opportunities.

Do any of the defensive coaches deserve to be promoted to defense of coordinator?
Or should we clean house?

We need someone with previous coordinating/play-calling experience (on both sides of the ball, IMO).

I don't think that person is in-house.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

No. We have no DC on staff. We need a new DC who has the option to retain any defensive coaches. IMO the only one border line worth keeping is JC.

But I wonder if Jones would be kept due to his close association with Pry. The other one I wonder about is Prioleau. We all agree the safety play has been atrocious, but do we cut ties with him knowing that, when healthy, his son, PJ, will be in serious contention for RB1 next year?

Jones is tough to get a read on. He put some guys in the NFL at Duke, which seems impressive. Here, Strong has been good and is one of the top ranked CBs in the country, but Delane has looked pretty lost sometimes.

Please, pretty please with sprinkles on top! Marve go find your NFL dream!

The article says that VT had one of the best defenses in the ACC this year. Wow!!!!

Life is good.

lol. watch the games.

I was being facetious. I said wow because how obviously wrong the article is.

Life is good.

I read it exactly the way you meant it.

πŸ™„πŸ™„. Agreed

To quote the Brothers Osborne: "I'm Good For Some But I'm Not For Everyone"

5th best scoring D
5th best passing D
Lowest Opponent Comp%, only team to not allow 200+ completions
t-6th fewest passing TDs allowed
t-4th most interceptions
5th most sacks
t-2nd in fumbles caused

Not the worst, by a long shot

Lowest Opponent Comp%, only team to not allow 200+ completions

I wonder if this is because we were (at one point recently when I looked at the stats) 13th in the conference in rushing D. No need to pass the ball if you can run it down our throats. But also impressive we could be tied for 4th in interceptions if there were so many fewer passing attempts.

Also lots of teams were limiting our possessions so we just had fewer plays in some games

That's a reference to amount of opponent plays we defended against, unless your point is fewer possessions on our part should translate to more opponent possessions/plays per game, and still the pass completions were very low?

If we didn't allow 200 completions maybe because our opponents threw less because there were fewer possession which mean fewer plays for both sides. and you don't limit possessions by being pass happy. However looking at data, we were 71st in opp pass attempts so didn't look like my hypothesis was correct

If there is a stat for conversion rates on 3rd and 7 or longer, I bet VT would not be highly ranked.

How much of the passing defense numbers was because anybody could run on us?

Lowest completion % is telling.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Pavia, Earle, Henicle, Kalikmanis, Ward, Lamson, Castellanos, Philo, Mccord, Klubnik, Murphy, Muskett

Half of those guys were so bad they weren't starters or ended up being benched. Ward is probably the only "good" thrower on the list with McCord and Klubnik maybe Pavia next and then its literally nobody. I'm not putting any weight into our passing defense when this is the list of opposing QBs.

5 teams on our schedule had a positive EPA on drop back plays. 1 of them was GT which didn't with Philo. The others were Vandy - L, Rutgers - L, Clemson - L, and Syracuse - L.

Remember FSU was laughing when we hired him.

We put the K in Kwality

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

This is precisely how this works. All agents have captive media people that they deal "scoops" out to during the silly season. Pete Thamel is notoriously a PR front for Jimmy Sexton and CAA for instance.

If Marve can get an NFL job he should take it. And if Marve wants to take an NFL job VT should not try and retain him. We can, and arguably must, do better on his side of the game as it is anyway. He's said a lot of good things but the product on the field is just flat and uninspired for quarters at a time.

It's be a real shame if he left for an NFL gig. A real shame.

Every second counts

like the eagles or something, I dunno

Marve is making $825,000

Considering a raise of 175k would make him t-15th highest paid NFL defensive coordinator, I don't see a massive upside in going up, and he'd definitely take a pay cut to become a position coach.

But if the League is his dream, that's a decision he'd have to make with his family.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

I think you may be missing that this may be him getting while the getting is good type scenario, whether assisted by Pry in finding a landing spot or not. You don't want to be questioning the money or dream or something when the firing happens.

Si.

I mean, yes. Consider him for other jobs.
