ACC Can Opener
Hokies come in on their first five game non-conference losing streak in over ONE HUNDRED YEARS. Now we get a first glimpse of how painful the ACC season may be.
It was another difficult game against Vanderbilt. Fifteen Hokie turnovers turned into 28 points for the Commodores.
Another game of the Hokies shooting less than 40% overall and less than 30% from the perimeter.
Pitt comes in 7-2 and had risen to 18th in the polls but that was short lived as they will certainly drop after a 90-57 loss to Mississippi St. Pitt's other loss was 81-75 to #19 Wisconsin. They have wins over Ohio St, LSU, and WVU of P4 opponents.
Pitt once again built on their portal success. Two current starters are in their second seasons with Pitt and that's been complemented with two additional starters in Cameron Corhen from FSU and Damian Dunn after a year in Houston. Dunn is in his 6th year after four years at Temple.
The Panthers' offense is built on versatility and teamwork. Guards Ishmael Leggett and Jaland Lowe are literally driving the Panthers to success. They emphasize ball movement to create open shots for players on the perimeter. So far this season the perimeter shooting has been a bit weak though at 33%. Their focus on many plays is on pick-and-roll opportunities to exploit defenses and create mismatches inside.
Spacing is crucial. The Panthers aim to stretch defenses, which allows driving lanes for attacking players. This strategy can lead to high-percentage shots both at the rim and from three-point range.
Defensively, the Panthers are aggressive using man-to-man defense. They prioritize ball pressure and aim to create turnovers, which can lead to fast-break opportunities.
They are holding opponents to 41% shooting and only 30% from the perimeter. They are forcing 13 turnovers per game and convert that to 20 points a game.
This is not an ideal team to open conference play against.

Comments
12/7, I was bummed that we had a whole game today I missed and no one commented on lol.
Good catch. Had to do this tonight as I will be away from all electronics tomorrow.
Thanks, as always for putting them together.
Yo Fam! The lady and I are leaving the Lake and coming down for the game... first Tech game in years for us after moving back here! I couldn't believe what I was seeing on SeatGeek... $3 ticket prices!?!? What the heck is happening?
Anyway, is parking available at the Stadium or is there a hot tip on where to park?
Lot 1, which is right across Beamer Way from Cassell, requires a pass. May be able to find one cheap online?
Lot 2, South Endzone lot, will probably be packed with student cars, but if you can find a spot you can park there. Lot 4, across Beamer Way from Lot 2 and next to softball field, is also an option, I think, if you can find a spot. I heard it might be a pass-required lot, but not sure. Another easy option is Lot 5, the Chicken Hill lot across Southgate from Lot 2. It'll be a brisk walk!
The Litton-Reeves lot, Lot 4, also requires a pass.
Lot 4 is a pass-required lot. Litton-Reeves is Lot 8 and also requires a parking pass.
Thanks for clarifying, Spriggy. Typo there saying Litton-Reeves was lot 4, when it is lot 8 as you stated!
There were 177 listing's yesterday for $1. You may have overpayed.
This is the first game season tickets holders are impacted so not surprising with where we are unfortunately.
Anyone buy a $1 ticket? Hearing the transaction fees might be as high as $20.
Vegas has set the line at -8.5 for Pitt. Vegas is more optimistic than I am.
How are they tied?
It's on ESPNU. I used to be able to watch on the .com. Now it tells me I cannot.
First game I'd be able to watch this year. My bad luck.
They just gave Pitt an extra point. He only hit a 2. Should be 26-25 Hokies
Hokies putting on a show even with 8 turnovers. Still think they need to review basket at 5:31 remaining to correct to a 2 pointer.
my jaw hit the floor seeing the halftime score. Seems like the team is really putting in the effort today
Looks like we are getting tired. Hopefully the break helps. We were starting to walk through the offense.
up 5, chance to extend the lead... turnover breakaway 2, turnover breakaway 2, turnover... up 1
Yeah really frustrating. Rechsteiner is very loose with the ball.
yeah, he's not a PG
can rechsteiner please stop dribbling in front of someone better than him
Turnovers
17 Pitt points off 17 TO's
Why are we trying to switch on ball screens with Burnham?!!
And turnovers doom the Hokies. Rechsteiner is not the answer. Really embarrassing last three minutes ruins their best performance of the season.
Up 7 with less than 4 minutes to go. At home.
Gives up a 15-3 run to close the game. Absolutely chokied this one away.
I'm done. It is too frustrating watching VT sports. Pitt has outscored us by 12 in the last 4 minutes. Until Whit is gone i am only watching the women's basketball team.
Predictable. Feel for MY. Trying to replace the whole team. He brought in some pieces, but too many are not ACC caliber.
Hard for any coach to have success with one arm tied behind his back financially
Most coaches wouldn't put up with it and would leave. But Mike Young won't leave and basically has a lifetime deal here lol. He'll probably collect his salary and roll up the losses during all this.
Until he finally gets fed up and resigns while destroying the admin in a press conference.
While eating popcorn
Other than free throws, the last bucket was a three pointer by Schutt with 5:19 remaining. Can't win when we have our patented 3 to 4 or even five minute stretches without scoring a field goal.
Yep...out shot Pitt on floor and on perimeter.
Turnovers gave them a 7 point edge. Free throw line was also a 7 point edge.
Young needs to hold tryouts for PG. See if he stumbles on a diamond. Losing Miller was a dagger.
Picture Ivy-Curry and Miller out there with Schutt, Lawal and Poteat. Completely different outlook.
Virginia lost 63-51. Sounds familiar.
Yep, seen that movie. Liking it better when loluva is the star of the movie.
I didn't get to watch this game, but do y'all think CMY is in danger of losing his job if this season continues its current trajectory? I know we're lacking both talent and NIL funds, but just curious if this season could be a tipping point considering other seasons haven't been exactly stellar.
No, with House settlement coming up we aren't eating any coaching buyouts (football HC/assistants or basketball). And we have already defunded basketball and CMY didn't find another job and leave town, so I think it's far more likely he just collects a paycheck and finishes out his contract then retires.
No because Whit made this happen so Whit would need to go first.
Nah. I don't see any other coach coming in and doing a significantly better job than CMY is able to do given everything else that's happening around VT athletics.
We literally couldn't have a better coach than Mike Young. We are a mid major in hoops at best. We are not Duke, UNC, etc. We have to win with guys like Mutts and Catoor, not with Pablo Banchero ... We literally could not find a better mid major coach. IIWII.
Darn. We had a game on 12/07? Looks, like we lost. Shucks.
