VT, UVa, UNC and NC State fined and reprimanded by the ACC for weekend fights

Don't ever say we haven't done anything for this conference! We're actively supporting the Postgraduate scholarship fund by beating up on our little brothers every year!

OSU-Michigan were both fined 100k by the Little10.

Honestly there should be suspensions and criminal charges coming out of that one, there won't be but there should be.

I want to see the players suspended for their next games. The police had to use pepper spray at that game. They are lucky they weren't arrested.

I'm waiting for the body camera video to come out from Columbus PD, Franklin county sheriff, we will never see the body cameras from Michigan or OSU police but they are the ones who used the most OC spray. By interesting to see if they sprayed only opposing players or their own also.

Pretty sure I saw both teams with players bent over and trying to wash eyes. I think the conference needs to suspend those players from their bowl/championship games.

Michigan was wrong, but so was anOSU when they did the same thing to Michigan last time they won there.

There was nothing on that broadcast that warranted pepper spray. The most violent thing was tearing the Michigan flag off its pole. I also look forward to the body cameras. Show me something that warranted using it.

I would put that event on Andy Bitters Kerfuffle rating from his scale here.

And the VT-UVA pregame shenanigans were definitely a dustup at best.

I've only seen stills so far, just got back to town, but I would argue there was at least some justification for it during the pileon when officers were trying to separate people and others were trying to join in. That's pretty classic case of reason to use OC spray, large unruly crowd that can overwhelm officers ability to restore command.

And those guys are young, athletic-strong and aggressive on adrenalin.

Those cops were very outnumbered by very large, very strong men.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Evidently, so was anOSU on Saturday.

Honestly, all this crap about planting your flag on the opposing team's logo, stomping on their logo, fans running out on the field after even modest wins is getting to be really Bush League. When it was rare or after massive upsets or whatnot, you could see it. Now it's so common and lame. I'd like to see more severe punishments for things like this. I mean, not just fines but people getting suspended, forfeiting the games for too many field rushes if you cannot control your crowd time after time. I mean, grow up people.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

I disagree and find this to be unfair. When would UVA's fan ever get to rush the field?

This is going to be great for the ACC.

A Vineyard Vines sponsored Zima and Wine tasting event.

Leg for the singular fan

The only time you should rush the field is if you win a championship or do something you have never done before- beat the #1 team in the country, etc. Other that that- it is busch league. In terms of the flag planting- yes its stupid and yes if I was on the home team, I would take issue with it and not let the opposing team do it.

I was on the field after we beat BC in 1999 to get to the National Championship game.

For Lane stadium itself, I was only ever on the field for the 2007 win over FSU. Prior to that there was the 1983 Squeaker in 1983 at Lane NORTH where- after stomping them 48-0 -we tore down their goal post and carried it out of the stadium; and then at the first ever VT bowl win in the Peach Bowl at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium on Dec 31st beating NC State. (Ah, NYE in Atlanta was sweet that year!)

From the 2018 VT-uva game-"This is when LEGENDS are made!"

Chris Kinzer!!! I was there as well. A huge win for the program!

Yep! And we won a lot of one score games that year.(6-1-1)- they still allowed ties back then; also capacity at lane was 50k; we usually only sold out UVA and WVU at home then. And look! we won at the Carrier Dome, too!

(Note the Temple game was a Hokie loss but was forfeited by Temple two years later after it was discovered that Temple RB Paul Palmer "had received an interest free cash loan of $5000 from sports agent Norby waters before the 1986..season... as well as monthly payments of $200 during the season"- including that as an ironic footnote given the current NIL environment!)

From the 2018 VT-uva game-"This is when LEGENDS are made!"

I remember the insanity of being on the field after that game.

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

I rushed the field when we beat #10 Clemson in 2006. That was the game I fell in love with Virginia Tech football.

1995, freshman year the first time we ever beat Miami

I was there - it was glorious. My first thought was, "who even thought to bring the rope to pull down the uprights?"

You mean couldn't win their first ACC title with a Heisman candidate quarterback and their best team in 10 years Miami?

Let's see what portal QB they pull out of their ass. I'm guessing he won't be as good/lucky as Cam Ward.

Watch, he will get a real QB coach and will turn into HH. Sorry I sound like a broken record. But, I will continue to be massively negative on VT's QB coaching until I see someone who is a VT QB in year X who plays a meaningful number of games actually show improvement in year X+1. Fully expect Pop to regress if he is the starter next year. Please, let the staff prove me wrong, but I don't think we've had a competent QB coach in 20 years.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

100%. We've never seemed to have anybody on staff to make a good QB better. Best we've done is have athletic QBs who could improvise and let them improvise. I think it was the Syracuse game where the announcer was talking about the staff getting Schlee to come to VT with the notion of "not fixing his mechanics, but changing his footwork to make him more accurate". That doesn't sound like a good approach to me.

Bryan Randall, Sean Glennon and LT were all much better the longer they spent in the program. That was good QB coaching, IMO. I thought Lefty did a pretty good job with Brewer too.

Those are good examples, though I think Randall and LT fall into the athletic improviser category I was talking about.
To be honest, outside of the 2 Ohio State games I sometimes completely forget about Brewer. Shame on me

To me, Randall was the last person who really improved strictly under VT coaching. Yes, Tyrod certainly did, but I'm not sure if that was him famously working with his high school coach and them overcoming VT's coaching. LT definitely got worse and Brewer stayed the same year-over-year. Yes, it can be hard to compare sometimes as people have injuries and the players around them change. Unfair to point to any 1 QB and say the coaching was bad or good overall because of 1 person. But, literally, things have been so bad for so long in terms of every single QB either saying the same, getting worse or leaving after a year that I'm comfortable saying we have not had a decent QB coach in decades.

Last year they had an opportunity with Wells: no. This year they had an opportunity with Drones: no. Next year they (probably) have an opportunity with Wilson: I'm assuming no until I see otherwise.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

TBF to LT, he did lose the top receivers in school history going from 2011 to 2012. That is going to impact anyone.

It's not that he lost the top two guys, it's that our WR recruiting was so bad that we had No one. We had Wilfork, witten, and Johnson then Royal, Morgan, clowney, harper, hyman then coales/boykin to Marcus Davis and Fuller who hadn't played football in 3 years we then went to ford/Phillips. It's insane how many great recievers we've had and then just dropped to most physically imposing WR VT has ever seen who didn't want to play have the plays or more.

I think this is a result of the fact players do not stay or play at a program longer than a year or 2. It's hard to gauge improvement when the sample sizes are so small. I can't immediately recall the last QB that actually played more than 1.5 to 2 consecutive seasons for us, was it Logan Thomas?

The only time I see planting the flag as a legit thing is for a neutral field game between rivals. Like the Red River. Doing it on the road is uncalled for. And at home, just form a circle around your center field logo as respect. No need for flags to trigger a response.

I don't follow UVA recruiting or anything, but as I was watching them I thought- I hope Elliott has a plan, because they just tanked this game. They never looked like they were trying to win. I guess he wrote the game/season off? It was sad really. They don't want to beat VT anymore?

Good to see that appears to only cover Ohio Stadium. It seems to be the only place in Ohio in danger of flag planting. Nobody is looking to claim any other part of Ohio. 😂🤣😂

Just the anOSU stadium or any stadium in Ohio? So when anOSU plants their flag at Ohio University it would be a felony?

Great. Then once it's passed, an Ohio judge can determine that calling a penalty and the ref tossing a flag is equivalent to "planting." Now any ref will face felony charges for calling penalties against one of several OSUs

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

all I have to say on the matter - we have grown incredibly soft as a society

you can tell we take ourselves far too seriously when we get upset about a college football player "planting" a flag in the field of the rival they just beat. Michigan won. You don't want them to plant a flag on your field? Don't let them win. Simple as that. If they do, suck it up, buttercup. Get better and don't allow it next time. Or, better yet, take that energy and focus it on beating them on their field so you can retaliate.

god we are so f*ing soft. bunch of wussies

I agree, it's soft to let the other team plant their flag in your logo. Beat them on the field, if you don't and they bring that kind of unsportsmanlike behavior to plant their flag? go ahead and whoop that ass.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

You had your chance to stop them during the game. If you can't do that, you just look like a bunch of fucking clowns if you suddenly start throwing fists after the game cause you're mad.

You don't want them to celebrate, win. If you can't win, stfu and get back to the locker room and use it as motivation to not let it happen again.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

But also win with a bit of class. Being an ass and rubbing it in by planting your flag like you get to keep the place and you deserve a punch in the mouth.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

As in VT tearing down the goalposts at Lane North in 19830 no resistance from UVA fans; in 1984 UVA won @ Blacksburg and TRIED to retaliate but the Corps of Cadets went out and defended the posts against the Wahoos that attempted it. Several hundred person brawl on the field- turned into a mud bog when some facilities genius decided to try and quell it by turning on the sprinklers. I'll never forget at the other endsa 40 yd line, a solo Blacksburg Sheriff stood with hand near his holster and no one came NEAR that end of the field....

...but that was FANS not team players.

From the 2018 VT-uva game-"This is when LEGENDS are made!"

Anyone done the cost benefit analysis on schools fighting pre/during/after the games?

It may cost a $100,000 fine per fight, but if we get more eyeballs on the league because people want to watch teams play that have bad blood. between them, that's a fee I'd gladly pay if it nets us millions in TV revenue.

Similar to Michael Jordan wearing his red shoes every game and just paying his fines.

I want games to be interesting again and I miss the vitriol we used to have for certain teams that I no longer see on campus when said teams come to town.

Only issue I see is actually having that real hate between teams. And for VT, loluva come to mind, and maybe Miami, but outside that it would be contrived and look silly just for the sake of getting guys riled up...which the coaches and captains, and patch on the chest and logo on the helmet should be providing for the game anyway.
