How safe is CMY's job?

Admittedly I didn't expect much going into this season, and I've been unplugged from all VT athletics since Thanksgiving. But, looking at our schedule and results, I see a program circling the drain. I don't see many winnable games the remained of this season and an NIT bid seems like a fantasy dream. CMY and the program have been on a downward trajectory ever since our ACCT championship, and I'm just left wondering how much longer we can go before a change is necessary, and does that change happen mid-season? It would be extremely uncharacteristic for Whit and this school to make a mid-season change, but if CMY doesn't have a future here why wait to pull the plug?

This just makes me flat out....well....sad. I had big hopes that Mike could be the right fit for us. I don't expect big things yearly, really, but to be competetive is mandatory . I really like the guy, but the question is who could make us better and how would they do that in today's game? At Virginia Tech? In the ACC, no less.

I don't think it's a CMY issue as much as it is the new college sports landscape. With the money and focus on football right now, I think this is what we'll get from MBB for the next few years

I disagree. The money and lack of funding for basketball NIL is understandable given our emphasis on football. But CMY just flat out isn't getting it done as a coach either, both can be simultaneously true. We shouldn't be this bad, we just look like a hodge podge roster and no one really putting forth winning effort. Before the NIL issue, he was showing that he couldn't manage the talent on the roster and was running off all his top recruits. Just not sold on him as a coach at all, we got a middle of the road mid major coach and I think we are seeing the results. Frankly if it wasn't for the now flukey looking ACC tourney run, he might have been gone already.

Need to go all in on Football to try to survive the next CFB re-org. If this means letting bball stagnate for a decade, so be it. Let CMY do his thing, if he recruits some shooters he has shown he can win games.

Every penny needs to go towards winning 10 games and getting into a playoff in football. Need to start peaking soon.

I think it all comes down to whether the rumors that they stripped the basketball program of NIL money to better support the football team, and whether that is true. If true, then CMY is doing the best he can and you can't really expect someone to craft a winning season with no NIL money these days, so he would be safe. If the rumors are false, then yeah I could see his seat getting very warm after this season.

I know the whole "they took away the team's NIL money" has been repeated a lot on here, but as far as I can remember I haven't actually seen or heard any proof of that happening.

And you won't, but that doesn't mean it isn't actively happening.

Yeah maybe, but usually there's a least a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who heard a thing lol.

Coach Young and Coach Duffy were both presented with a choice - proceed with Cassell renovations or divert the money to NIL. They both chose to divert to NIL. I don't think anyone has cut money, at least no net loss that I'm aware of. It's entirely possible that there was a cut and they were told that's how they could make it up, but that's not how it was presented to me.

"Exit light..."

I trust this to be correct. Whenever there are questions as to what is occurring on campus TKP can usually lean on GuitarMan for the skinny. 😁

This is very likely well sourced info. I trust this.

Sorry, don't want that to happen. I enjoy VT basketball, men's and women's and have for 55+ years, and have many fond memories of raising the roof in the Cassell and the many fine players and exciting games we've had over the years. I truly enjoyed VT football when we sucked, but was also there for Beamer's arrival and eventually began the ascending program, but I still went to basketball games when I could. This year, for the first time in all of those years I don't attend, watch or listen to every game. I want both without sacrificing one for the other. Pipe dream though, right?

It's not just "they took away the NIL money". They also have not given Young the resources to hire the NCAA allowed 5 assistant coaches. They have not increased his recruiting staff or supporting staff commensurate with even other ACC programs, and they shelved the Cassell remodel. These aren't small things when it comes to performance of a basketball team. Young's seat should not warm up until Whit's, the Hokie Club leadership and Triumph leadership's seats are all scalding. BOV and Sands may let Whit scapegoat Young but there are two problems there.

1. Who could do better with both hands tied behind their back?

2. Who would even be willing to risk their coaching future to even try knowing they don't have the support of the administration?

More like gagged, hogtied and then put into a coma. Not sure if there is another coach that could do any better.

They also have not given Young the resources to hire the NCAA allowed 5 assistant coaches

This part is absolutely wild to me.

If this is the case, the question we should be asking is not "is Mike Young's seat hot?" it's "how much longer is Mike Young willing to put up with this and when does he just retire?"

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

Exactly. Considering the amount of his peers that have done the same (Roy Williams, Coach K, Boeheim, Larrañaga, etc) I wouldn't blame him one bit.

Which stinks, because his local ties and demeanor are awesome.

Add Tony Bennett. If I'm MY, I leave after this year so I don't have to rebuild again next year. Sad state of college BB.

This right here. I don't think any other coach can come into this environment at Tech and do significantly better than CMY. Firing Young and just plugging in someone else isn't going to solve the problem.

I actually hate it as I've had season tickets for hoops longer than football, but it's the reality of the situation

The answer is "not all all". Whit hired CMY because he was able to compete with less at Wofford. I don't have proof, but just know there had to be some behind closed doors agreement that CMY gets to keep the ship afloat the best he can while Whit tries to fix football. Once Whit gives CMY a real staff and NIL budget, then the clock starts. Whit would be hosed if CMY decides to retire as he will either have to find the cash for BBall to lure a decent coach or take whomever will agree to step into a hamstring job.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.
