Getting us kicked off for the new year with a crootin thread as the Under Armor All-America game is tomorrow and we should be seeing some Class of 2026 commits start announcing
Savion Hiter is on the UA team as a junior
Wouldnt expect him to be announcing this early in the cycle with that offer list
I double take every time I read his name because I inadvertently put an L in the middle of his last name.
You are not the only one
Yup
Hilter? Sorry, couldn't help myself.
If it's pronounced "hitter", that's a great football name
Actually, it's pronounced "Kevin"
Composite 4* WR/TE Carnell Warren will be announcing tomorrow and has the Hokies on his short list along with GT, Duke, and Wake

CBs are pointed twds the good guys but they were made in November. Fingers crossed for good news tomorrow
I love the last name, any relationship to past Hokie greats?
Edit: apparently not. Impressive film highpointing passes and catching with his hands extended.
4th Quarter, 2nd break will be when he commits.
Aaaaaand crickets. Anyone got an update? I dont see anything online about a commitment
It's only halftime
edit: He may be committing sooner.
Oh i was going by the commitment tracker on 247
Looks like we got him!

Could we use a linebacker, or is the talk about jobs a turnoff?
This is hilarious.
He's a first in, last out kinda guy.
Honestly, if I was hiring right now I'd at least give him an interview
Maybe the lunchpail comment was a hint!
I can't tell whether he's declaring for the portal, or declaring for life after football.
Funny either way.
Evan Watkins bat signal is up again
For the new D Coordinator "recruit"?
I'd guess Watkins signal is for Greene there's been smoke about him signing the past couple days.
I agree but guess we will see
Which Greene?
Donavan Greene
Wake Forest WR

Or Sparks.
And Sparks?
Who's Sparks?

Greene commitment just announced
Matej said player not coach when I asked on Twitter
Love reeling in more local 4* talent.
How much do you think they paid him to play another year instead of entering the draft? Has to be an absurd amount of money.
I actually don't think he was getting good draft grades so probably would have been a practice squad guy so anything over $150K is a raise
I mean I don't think he was going to be taken the first 2 days. He scares me much less than Cam Ward, Beck is very very average and was carried by having a roster of NFL talent around him.
Im much more concerned with collosal prick Restrepo getting a 7th year somehow.
Reportedly twice as much as Cam Ward, to the tune of $4mm
NFL rookie base salary for a fucking FIRST round draft pick QB- 950K. Carson Beck an UDFA prospect likely - 4 million for a year- to play 12 games- he will opt out of any bowl. There is a stronger economic market in the underworld of college mega boosters with endless money apparently than NFL franchises valued in the 6-10 billion range today. This is very healthy and sustainable.
any rookie first round player regardless of position is getting a minimum of $13m guaranteed over 4 years (for pick #32) and as much as $42m (for pick #1)
College football is going the way of the naval arms race of the early 20th century.
The Big Ten, right now, is the UK. Almost unlimited resources, spamming dreadnoughts and super dreadnoughts.
The SEC is Germany. Keeping up, especially with a few new additions, but they'll run out of money soon
The ACC is the USA. Behind, but a few good designs. Some weird ones, too.
The Big 12 is the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Well past it's glory days as it's been partitioned off.
The Pac 12 is the Ottoman Empire. Lol
The AAC is Imperial Russia. The name change isn't fooling anybody. You still suck.
The MWC is Greece, constantly fighting with the Ottoman Empire
The MAC is France, historically getting picked on by the UK
The Sun Belt is Italy, they exist
Conference USA are the ABC fleets of South America, nobody cares
Notre Dame is Japan. All of their prestige came from the UK.
The remaining Independents are China. Who?
Eventually shit hits the fan, and treaties need to be enacted to level the playing field, but, shocker, the only people adhering to the stipulations are the Americans, while everyone else lies their asses off.
This is really interesting, since my current read is Six Frigates (about the founding of the US Navy), which talks about the state of navies at the beginning of the 19th century.
Good book.
It came out around the time I submitted my thesis on the birth of the American Navy.
Really wish I had it when I was writing it.
My thesis advisor got it for me as a parting gift.
I'd really like to read your thesis.
Email me at matt (dot) hokie (at) icloud (dot) com
As terrible as it sounds, I don't have a copy of it.
I only could afford to make three copies. One went to my thesis advisor who died a few years later. One burned up in when my grandpa's house caught fire. The other was lost in my move to Richmond. It had been saved to Microsoft Word, not GoogleDocs, so once my computer died, I didn't have a digital copy.
Was it not published? If so, if I knew the title/author, it could possibly be found on arXiv.
It was my senior thesis for my concentration, not my M.A. It wasn't published.
Do you still have the computer? Even if everything died, you could probably still take the hard drive out. They make legacy connector cables and other stuff if you wanted to recover it and still have it.
No, that was about four computers ago.
"The Pac 12 is the Ottoman Empire. Lol"
That was good!
"The sick man of NCAA football"
I was thinking of the empires being carved up.
I mean they did lose a lot of territory to the UK.
07Hokie: you need to copyright this, the press is gonna use this. It's a perfect analogy.
I may not be totally up on my IP law, but I believe as the content was published in this forum, it can be considered to be owned by both the Orange and Maroon Media and myself but then again, IANAL.

I mean, I got what he meant, but just because something can be made into an acronym doesn't mean that it should.
Back in the 80s when I lived in St. Louis area, there was some company that I wish I could remember the exact name of. Something like Automatic Industrial Diagnostics Systems and they went by AIDS. Not their fault that they had to change things, I guess.
We don't kink shame here
For a board that knows that these numbers are all made up we sure do talk about them a lot
Fun fact, we beat Miami with Cam Ward this year!
This guy is very average if you can change the picture/coverage post snap on him or speed him up. This concerns me a lot less than Cam Ward - especially if we make a legit DC hire.
Miami has never won the ACC- this is a fact. What is also a fact is that it fucking sucks and is annoying beyond fucking belief that they can pluck the best QB in the market every year. Fuck this.
FIFY
Got to be honest, I think he sucks. Don't understand the whole 'best player in the portal.'
Well sure, let's hope so.... much more likely is him lighting up our new young defense at 25 years old to the tune of 400 yards passing and 3 TDs.
I read somewhere that his girlfriend also plays on the UM basketball team. So this is not too surprising.
He dates one of the Cavinder twins
Wonder if he really knows which one, haha?
As an aside, seems like the twins have been playing forever. Enter DC...
She will be done playing for them and back to making social media clips by the time Spring football starts. This is last season for both twins. Her sister will make the WNBA. She will not.
Damn it! Justin Terry (freshman OT) removed his name from the portal and will return to WVU (at least for the spring)
Just read in the Roanoke Times that New Mexico safety Christian Ellis, 6' 202lbs is coming to the Hokies for his last year of eligibility. I know nada about him other than what the artifcle said.
Someone needs to TKP harder
https://www.thekeyplay.com/content/2025/january/9/christian-ellis-transf...
That would be me. I slink away in shame.
EDIT: To be fair to me, I never saw the announcement on the active discussions list, and I did look, but it must've slipped fast since I only check TKP four or five times a day and never saw it. It's 10 places down on the full list after the first page already. No way will I TKP any harder than I do, so I'm doomed to shame, I guess.
We've got a good haul so far. If we get Moore I will feel a lot better about next year
Conner Moore to Sparty
DAMMIT!
That is now 7 transfers in that were either rated 4* out of HS or as transfers.
ACC single-season passing record holder and 2024 FBS passing yards leader Kyle McCord (Syracuse) has opted to enter his name in the 2025 NFL Draft https://www.sportingnews.com/us/ncaa-football/news/top-acc-quarterback-o...
Interesting as this is a really really weak class which is odd that Ewers and Beck are transferring when everyone said they were the best two QBs last august.
Well, if the best aren't going and you're marginal at worst, go and get a team to severely overpay you in a week class.
I think those two hurt their stock this year. Beck was terrible. I dont know why Ewers isn't going NFL but here we are.
Ewers announced on GameDay today he is going pro.
Idk what Beck is doing, I don't think he should get drafted, but I bet a team would've bit anyway.
well that makes sense for Ewers
Beck to Miami
https://bleCarson-Beck-transfers-to-miami-after-leaving-georgia
Idk why Miami wants him so badly. I don't think he's that great.
It's all optics and being in the national conversation
I don't disagree... I just think there's better ways to achieve that
strong brock berlin vibes from him
Rumors today are saying a school is offering him $6M in NIL. Like other reported offers, I'm sure this is way over exaggerated from the actual amount.

Man the transfer portal era is weird the whole locker room is different next year
I know we were supposed to have a good year this year with our returning production, but our OLine was suspect last year, and again a weak point this year. With the incoming OLine transfers and Moore, as well as a new DC, and what feels like a complete reloading across the entire roster with veteran production (yes, as DCWilson points out, a lot isn't from the P4 though, but graded pretty high regardless), I'm starting to feel like we might be able to have a much better year than expected next year.
Are you new to Hokie football? /s
We went from losing blowouts, to losing one score games, now we'll just lose one point games.
I feel the same way. I wouldn't be surprised if we have a better W/L next season. I think the changes Pry is making is gong to "lift the spirits"
of the entire organization and the mental game will be a strong point across the board.
I have seen first hand too many in my years of coaching youth sports (rec to HS) and in performance based business where people transform into totally different beings who have made no changes to themselves but a mental state of "believing".
Feels like if we had one more OT we would be in a much better shape. missing on Connor Moore was big.
EDIT: Adding on, EDGE feels undermanned as well. NFL analytics say OT, EDGE, QB, and CB positions have more weight on success than any other position and I think we are at best ok in 2 of the 4.
Considering we're now sitting with the #12 transfer class, looking at those remaining positions you listed above, we could make a run at OTs, Rahtrel Perry (Cent Conn St), EDGE Kahmari Brown (Elon), CB Brandon Cisse (NC State), and probably add LB Jimmori Robinson (UTSA) as an EDGE
Virginia Tech among the final 2 for UTSA EDGE Jimmori Robinson along with West Virginia. He was the 2024 AAC Defensive Player of the Year with 43 tackles including 10.5 sacks this past season and is from Northern Virginia
If it hurts Rich Rod, I'm all for it
We big dog WVU now. He's coming here for sure.
We badly need another EDGE on the roster
We will have an uphill battle due to admissions issues
I guess the addition of the Texas St kid says this guy is headed to stew Virginia?
Still hearing there were admissions issues for us but not WVU. Kind of think the two day delay was to try to fix that but don't think it happened.
Still no announcement
...and goes to the Cousins...welp
More likely going the Adonis Alexander route. Forced NFL Draft.
Huge grain of salt with these transfer portal rankings is it compares inbound transfers to outbound transfers. It doesn't take into consideration talent leaving via graduation.
So yes, On3 ranks our gains from the portal as significantly better than our losses. But overall our talent level across the board would seem to be trending down next year (on paper at least).
Pulling the same thread nationally:
I put less than zero stock in these rankings. none. zero. Did we add an impact Will LB? Did we get a stud RB- or 2 moneyball guys? Did we replace Delane? Did we sign a legit RT? These rankings are nonsense.
we shall see won't we? We shed a bunch of kids THIS staff recruited and sign more than most- If you can't see hoe flawed that logic is in terms of these rankings, I can't help you. Keep this energy when FSU signs 8 5 star players in the next window please, and convince me how the Wingate kid is a great get.
No one is trying to convince you that he's not even included in this list which is filtering on perceived transfer quality.
Yes like any ranking we shall see that's exactly what rankings and grades are, an outlook on potential.
Edit: to agree with you a little no one should think that this means we've got a fantastic roster. pff grades are all eye test grades it doesn't directly factor in how ahitty of an opponent they're playing against. That said I'd rather be #2 on this list than #132
"to agree with you a little no one should think that this means we've got a fantastic roster" - exactly... like when Chris Coleman was trying to carry fuente's water on shit recruiting classes claiming they were better than they were because of Taj Capeharts fake offers from the SEC. This is no different.
This pretty different.... Suggesting it is no different is ludicrous. PFF grades are an assessment of performance. Non-commitable offer lists are a facade.
J Reddish and Priester did get added to on3 this week, so they should get a grade soon and likely drop our on3 ranking a bit. I've been waiting for them to come in to build out some tables comparing the ins-and-outs at each position.
I think we're getting hung up on these 2 pickups. Reddish is going to be a ST player and we're probably hoping to use him and Q to get Nick Reddish. Priester might never see the field, but our roster is devoid of dudes his size, so the staff took a shot. I'm guessing they allotted X amount of the new scholarships to players that they knew we wouldn't get a ROI this season. 105 guys aren't seeing the field this year or ever.
I think DC makes a good point that this roster might not be elevating the total talent much, if at all, but the Wingate and DII guy aren't really the issue. To me, there is an obvious reason for adding both of them. The issue is LB still looks like a liability and we're trading 3 stars for 3 stars. Also, elevating talent will help us overcome the coaching and game management mistakes, but if you kept our roster the same talent-wise and fixed the coaching errors in 2024 we win 8 or 9 games at minimum and probably don't have as much attrition heading into 2025.
TLDR: The rankings should always be taken with a grain of salt, it's hard to say that these coaches haven't improved our roster since getting here(but you could argue they haven't done it fast enough), IMO we could use more talent but the coaching is what is currently holding us back.
I hear you for the most part, we have no real idea how most of these dudes will play...but I definitely saw that shit coming
you're currently putting zero stock in anything Pry or VT football in general. which seems mostly reactionary based on the underachieving 2024 season. Some of it is fair, some of it is silly. The most ridiculous is suggesting that an O-line coach with a proven record will be bad because he is not getting the same salary as the prior overpaid O-line coach. Some things are not good predictors of future success, and I would bet my mortgage that actual bona fide prior success is more predictive of future success than a salary comparison with a predecessor.
PFF grade is a good assessment for player ability. A high score indicates that a player repeatedly made the right play with success. Sure, it's against lower talent, but you have to have good mechanics and sound football IQ to get a good PFF grade.
It would be interesting to see how lower level PFF translates to the P4 level. Hopefully someone with access to such data can do a more robust assessment of how predictive lower level PFF is at the higher level. But to put zero stock in PFF grade is ignoring actual prior success.
You are putting words in my mouth and missing all of the very important context of my comments regarding the program and Pry. If you want to argue we aren't simply treading water by every metric - let's have an adult conversation about it. I'd love to hear you refute that. My comments on the OL coach were based on facts of course. Crook was shit and was fired- so we are going to upgrade big time, right? because we want to stop treading water. So we low ball the new guy- that is a fact. If to give your side of the argument the benefit of doubt beyond that fact - 1. Rich Rod would have kept him and given him a raise, or 2. He would have commanded a much higher salary than Crook on the open market. So outside of those facts, what Pry did was simply hire WVU's OL coach and hope the line will be better. He - fact- did not go out and get a big time, in demand, highly paid OL coach. Which is fucking fine- but let's not pretend we are fishing in the big pond and making huge improvements in staff here. We are treading water. That is my whole point. We are doing the same thing- paying the same salary for an OL coach- and expecting different results. Now saying Moore is grossly underpaid, he really is Alex Gibbs, and Crook was stealing money is conjecture, nothing more. Whit went on the cheap. It is what it is. Expect the same results.
Maybe you don't realize who we actually are.
What big time OL coach were we going to go out and outbid everyone for? We aren't a blue-blood. Moore has a buy-out paying him for being let go and after that year his salary at Tech automatically goes up. If we over paid for him would you be happy?
From what I've seen WVUs OL was pretty good. Their worst year under Moore was equal to our best year in past few.
It sounds like you want coaching hire results that aren't just realistic.
"Maybe you don't realize who we actually are."- no I do perfectly and that's what people take issue with on here. We are treading water... would you disagree?
I don't disagree, but at times you act as if we have the money to go get whomever we want. And if we don't go hire Joe Rudolph back, who obviously only took the job to get out of Wisconsin, then we are garbage.
We aren't getting the top OL Coach in the country. I'm not sure what is wrong with Moore. For all accounts he seems like a step up from Crook. And some decent lineman have followed him here, so why all the anger over him?
I was great with Moore and still am with him as a coach. My commentary was its disappointing to know that Whits answer to shaking up the staff and "hard conversations" after a totally shit/disjointing season was to offer Moore lateral money. You stated in this post that money is a factor. Lateral money typically gets lateral results. We shall see.
there are comments around that it's lateral money until his payout from WVU ends and then he's bumped up
If we had offered him more money would you feel better about the hire?
So what is it? Is Clemson - insert B1G or SEC team here- better than we are and in the playoff because they pay coaches more, have more money, have a larger budget, bigger NIL or not? That's all I hear is that VT doesn't have the money to compete. Would you agree that is a very common theme on this board? So if money is important, t's important regarding a higher quality OL coach too. Can't have it both ways. We went out and paid the same as the old guy was making.
Hire the best coaches point blank period. At the lowest cost possible, but if you have to pay more for a good coach then do it.
If you're hiring the best guys at their market price then the salary pool with naturally be high. But just raising it doesn't make your coaches better. This is common sense.
Do you honestly think paying the same coaches more money makes them better coaches? That type of logic could've got you a job in Merryman in 2021. Thankfully it looks like Whit is learning from his mistakes
As stated much earlier in this topic. If you don't agree that higher paid coaches are better coaches, this topic makes no sense. If you don't agree with that, then it's pointless. Our OL has been a disaster since the team played on the plain in front of pritchard before Lane was built. So we are simply hoping the modest salary guy works out- that's all this is. We did not go get a highly paid OL coach to fix it- if you think pay is meaningless- stop here.
Except it's not lateral money. WV let him go. His salary prior to us hiring him was $0. He was a victim of a head coach change and we were fortunate to pick him up and then also be the beneficiary of guys he'd recruited coming to us. It seems like it speaks to the quality of him as a recruiter at the very least.
"His salary prior to us hiring him was $0."- willfully obtuse semantics to cause an internet argument.
this entire subthread about Moore's salary is that. let's move on
My apologies for responding again, but was actually curious what O Line coach salaries are and how we are compensating in comparison.
It's not willfully obtuse. Your entire argument was based on the similarity between this and his previous job. You didn't say anything about his salary relative to all O Line coaches. You also didn't take into consideration what I said about salary plus incentives.
Football scoop shows that Moore's salary was $440k at WVU (before he was let go this year). Crook's salary was $490k. Roanoke Times says Moore has a two year salary and incentives package worth more than $1M, so averaging about $500k per year (since it doesn't say how MUCH more).
Also, I can't find the other article I'd previously found regarding how much West Virginia owed him for terminating his contract for convenience. I think he was owed one year of his full salary, but if he was employed by another college, they would pay the difference (which was either $125k or $175k). Whit may have intentionally paid Moore less in his first year because his total compensation including what WVU would pay would put him at close to $600k, then bump his second year up to $600k, which would seem to align to what his known first year would be plus what Roanoke times reported the total to be.
If his compensation is around $600k, that puts him around 19th highest in the country, at around $500k (total compensation), would put him at around 31st. 31st isn't great, but 19th (there are a bunch all tied at 600k)is arguably where we'd want to be until we start winning more games.
That is the type of discussion I would have expected regarding O Line coach compensation to say whether or not he was underpaid, not a comparison to what he made at his last job.
Again, you're using "salary command" as compared to his predecessor as predictor of success when Moore has had bona fide, tangible success, both on the recruiting trail and in development into NFL talent. And has already half-transformed VT's O-line.
And apologies you're also suggesting Rich Rod's assessment is predictive of future success, which I must agree, is the best metric of future success there is. I apologize. We should now, for all future predictions of success, determine whether Rich Rod approves. He is clearly the best coach at determining how to succeed in today's college football and his decisions should be spread as gospel. (Give me a joke!)
"Again, you're using "salary command" - yep, VT can't afford this and that remember? We are poor thus the reason why we are 6-6... salary command matters in those conversations I guess? "Moore has had bona fide, tangible success, both on the recruiting trail and in development into NFL talent." - he was not retained at WVU and was available for a discount....
Was hoping the Penn State CB that went into the portal earlier this week would be the Delane replacement...looks like he's going to to Buttgers.
I think you're right to an extent but...I think Nash and the Ginger Twins are very respectable replacements for APR and Peebles. We flipped and improved an awful safety room. The "moneyball" RBs have very, very good tape and don't expect a huge drop off from Tuten. Seldon will get carries in the Jaylin Lane role.
CB, LB and OL still need depth but Bass and the three WVU kids are a good start. The VT 247 insiders are high on IBM as a nickel CB...The hope is we can evaluate what we have in the spring and fill the rest of the holes in the spring portal. Remember, we did get APR in the spring portal, it's not like it's completely devoid of talent.
I want to see how the OL reacts to have a non-F level OL coach. I expect rapid improvement from the incumbents.
Want to see if the LBs can pack on 10-15 lbs with a non-F level S&C coach.
Want to see if the new DC is moving to a true 4-2-5 which would explain the LB / S distribution in the portal.
"a huge drop off from Tuten"- WADR, I expect there to be a huge drop off here. As well as whomever replaces Peebles.
Yeah, dudes like that don't grow on trees. However, I believe the production we are bringing in will be solid to good. Just doubtful you're going to get the same AA level back to back. Caveat being, if you can improve the structure around these guys (Better OL Play for Offense, better safety/LB play and play calling on defense) then it won't be AS noticeable of a drop off
Hopefully the OL will improve enough that we can get good production from the run game without needing a RB who can get 95% of his yards after contact and break 57 tackles a game.
I guess I'll find out during the spring game
I guess I'll find out during the
spring gamebowl game.Sorry, could not resist. Hopefully we can at least make it to a bowl game next season so we can have another game with half the team opting out.
Long way until September but I'm at 4-5 wins tops right now for 2025.
Hopefully with the new proposed transfer portal period there will be less optouts going forward
i think that's an uphill battle. of course the coaches want the policy revision that will benefit their football team the most. it's a nothing burger til it's codified, and i think it's unlikely because of academic side of things
I think it's a pipe dream as long as the players have lawyers now. They will sue the NCAA saying it limits their ability to earn compensation in the event they don't have a starting role in Spring or someone tampers and offers them a big check due to injuries or other portal entries.
But like also I don't think the schools want it
S&C Coach.....still no announcement. This is even more odd than the DC at this point.
Natty inbound
This gif is a bit....disturbing.
Because there's no lubricant? For the train?
Ben bell, DE a Hokie!
Now the Hardee's Coupons will be expired and without a home. However will we bribe athletes now?
Wait, why go all the way to PF with coupons? Use them on campus. Isn't there still a Hardee's in Squires?!? /s as an old person
Ugh, this one hurts. Trying to think about how many roast beef sandwiches I had from there. Always two per visit.
I used to live back behind that Hardee's. The geolocation on the app wasnt very good and I could check into the store from BT. 5 check in got you a free fry 10 got you a free burger. I was eating at least once a week there free on top of all the other times I went. That place pretty much got me through sophomore year.
Been in that restaurant many times at 2 am after a bender. At the time it was the only place open. Nothing tasted as glorious as those french toast sticks after a million beers. Sad day for an icon in my memory
Terrible news. That place was rocking at 2am. I don't think anyone went there sober. Got tossed out and banned one night because my drunk ass went there but my brain apparently was home asleep. My autopilot had a serious malfunction.
I have been reading the comments on this thread and refraining from comment.
Bold prediction: Dex is our next DC. PSU will land their external DC one way or another.
I don't think we wiff this one. If Pry was on this board, he would tell everyone to relax.
That's my gut feeling.
Until now. ;^)
@DC
NCAA stepped in and said yeah we can't stop him from transferring schools (even though he didn't use the portal)
Remind me, what exactly does the NCAA do for college sports these days?
Organize and run championship tournaments in non-football sports
Reading only the tweets, I thought it was dbag kid pulled a fast one.
Nope. Kid has a sick dad in Florida, and school refused to put him in the portal because he signed paperwork BEFORE his dad's stroke.
Add Wisconsin to the list of schools I will always root against.
The only BigTen school I will ever not actively root against is Iowa.
