WBB at Pitt Jan 23 at 6 PM

The Ladies travel to the frozen north to play Pitt today at 6 PM. The game will be on ACCN extra. Pitt is 9-11, 1-6 in the ACC; the Hokies are 13-5, 4-3. PItt has lost to a bunch of top 20 teams and some not so great teams. Their one ACC win was at home against SMU. They have lost 5 of their last 6; but they have played decent teams over that span, losing to 4 ranked teams and Louisville. The Hokies beat Louisville 70-65 in their last game. Against other common opponents: Pitt lost to Miami 62-56; we beat them 68-64. Pitt lost to Ga Tech 100-61; we beat them 105-94 in double overtime. Duke beat Pitt 61-39; we lost to Duke 81-59. ESPN says we are 10.5 point favorites with an over/under of 134.5. The Matchup Predictor gives us 90.1% chance of winning.

11 different players have started a game for Pitt. Only #11 5'7 junior guard Marley Washenitz has started every game; she is also the only player in the top six who has played her entire career at Pitt. #2 Amiya Jenkins has not played against an ACC team; so I assume she is out for some reason since she started the three games she played in. Probable starters are #0 5'5 senior guard Brooklyn Miles, #3 6'3 senior forward MaKayla Elmore, Washenitz, #15, 6'4 grad Khadija Faye and #23 6'1 rsoph guard Michayla Johnson. The Hokies are again going to be at a disadvantage in the paint.

Faye and Johnson lead the scoring at 18.1 and 10.2 ppg. Washenitz averages 8; everyone else is less than 5. Faye also averages 9.5 rebounds per game, almost half of them offensive. The Ladies are again going to have a problem keeping Pitt from getting second chances on missed shots. Faye averages 3.4 fouls per game; but still manages to play 29.4 min. Washenitz also averages over 3 fouls per game(3.1). The Panthers average 13.1 assists, 17.7 TOs and 8.5 steals. PItt shoots 38.7% overall and 33.9% from beyond the arc. They shoot about 19 threes per game and make about 6. They only shoot 69.4% from the free throw line.

Below is a table I stole from Pitts web page:

Overall the stats favor the Hokies. My only real concern is dealing with the height in the paint and the possibilty that Johnson or someone else may get hot from beyond the arc. This is a game the Ladies should win; but winning on the road in the ACC is never easy.

LET'S GO HOKIES!

LET'S GO!!!!

HOKIES!!!!

Just turned the game on to a 2 point lead and suddenly we're up 9. I don't know what we were doing before, but we should keep doing what we just did more often.

21 - 10 lead... end of 1st

I seldom speak to loluva grads, but when I do, I tell them I want large fries.

Good first quarter. 47% FG, 3-6 (50%) 3-Ptr, 14-6 rebounds

41 - 25 HOKIES at the half

54.5% from three and only three turnovers. And the offense looks really smooth.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

Really good halftime stats... 47% on 17 of 36 FG. 14 assist on those 17 made baskets! 6 of 11 from 3-point range, 55%. Up 24 to 14 on rebounds. Only three turnovers in first half. This is great! Balanced scoring from our starters... Ekh with 11, L White 10, Micheaux and Baker with 8 each, Wenzel with 4. Wenzel did not play in the 2nd Qtr. She picked up her 2nd foul near the end of the 1st. Only negative, if there is one, is no bench points. Nelson, Wells, R White, and Peterson all got minutes with all but R White taking shots.
Overall, really good half of basketball.

The Hokies have done a great job keeping Faye off the boards.

WBB is looking like a good hire. Way to go Hokies!

A long way to go, and this certainly doesn't look like the final 4 team we had a couple years ago, but getting to the tourney year 1 would be a great place to be at year one for CMD.

Can't be a final four team until they find a true center. Rose does a great job, but she really can't guard an athletic center.

My wife takes the kids and leaves the house while I watch my Hokie games.........nuff said

Women took a page from the men but won. Shot better from 3 than inside

13 for 26 from outside 50%
19 for 49 from inside 38.7%

Yeah... layups are hard to come by sometimes. Rose can hit the 8' to 15' turn around jumper and the left handed layup off the glass. But boy, those bunnies right in front are either too soft off the front of the rim, or too hard off the back. Carleigh's right handed scoop layup goes from the right side off the glass to the left side. Sometimes never hitting the rim. I know it's bound to be frustrating to them and I hope down the stretch those will start falling.

Don't hire a new DC. Re-route the $ to WBB NIL. Win a natty. Who says no?

Every second counts

Scary thing is neither the WBB or MBB have the full complement of coaches allowed.
