Andy Smith wins 8-2 and on to Semifinals
Mullen up on Mat 2
Mullen up 3-0 early
Mullen with the pin to advance to Semifinals
Woo! Nice.
Does a pin give the team bonus points? Or is that a different format?
It does. Right now Hokies are 4th mainly because of how many byes we had. Curious if other schools didn't send their lesser guys on purpose.

All Done until 2pm
Hokies only suffer 1 loss in the first round.
NC State lost 3 matches in the first round, as has UNC.
Pitt has 4 losses
Stanford has 4 losses in the first round and doesn't have a wrestler at 125.
UVA has 5 losses.
Duke has 8 losses and doesn't have a wrestler at 125.
Yeah but NC State got 12 points in first round because they wrestled in nine weight classes
But, having 2 more losses than us can even itself out when we get to the podium matches.
Pitt has been eliminated at 133
Duke has been eliminated at 141, 149, 157, 165, 174, 184, and 197
UVA has been eliminated at 285
Ventresca putting in work in round 2.
Up 6-1 in the first period.
Ventresca with the major, 1 point shy of a TF
VT vs NC State at 125 for the title
McGonagle up 1-0 with a minute left in the 3rd.
McGonagle wins 1-0 to advance to the final round. Will face Kai Orine of NC State, after an upset of #1 Ethan Oakley
Latona advances to the finals 1-0. Opponent appears to be Dylan Cedeno of UVA, who wins by RT
Henson up 3-0 early
Only on ACCNx for me, not the main network. Casting onto my TV through Firestick.
Henson rocking a 6-1 lead going into the 2nd period
10-1 going into the 3rd
TECH FALL FOR HENSON 21-4
Will face UNC's Lachlan McNeil in the finals.
Hokies in the finals at all 4 lower weight classes.
Hipolito up now at 157.
Hipolito with the MD, will face NC State's Ed Scott in the Finals at 157
Hokies have now built up a 20 point team lead through the lower 5 weight classes.
Church loses in the 174 semi, but so to does NC State's Fields, limiting NC State's ability to claw back some points.
Stewart falls to Pitt's Reece Heller, while NC State's Dylan Fishback advances to the 184 finals.
Smith drops to Consolation
Rough back end today. Hopefully Mullen gets a W
Smith loses, but NC State is not in the finals
4-1 jimmy after 1st
Mullen should have gotten back points. Surprised Robie didn't challenge
Mullen still up 4-1 but RT secured
Mullen maj decision 11-2
#1 Trumble falls to Pitt, while Mullen advances with a MD.
Hokies with a 13 point lead going into the consolation portion of the evening.
6 Hokies have clinched NCAA invites
Wolak fights back from 5-1 to win with a takedown as time expires and qualifies for the NCAAs
Church qualifies for the NCAAs with a takedown with 11 seconds to go.
Andy Smith advances to the Third Place match.
Stewart up 3-1 after 1st
Stewart up 6-3 with RT nearly secure
Stewart wins 9-4
Stewart advances to the Third Place match
8 Hokies have qualified for the NCAAs, heading into the Third Place Matches
Getting all 10 in will be a tall order.
Wolak will be going up against the #1 seed Ogunsanya from UNC, while Stewart will be going up against the #3 seed Kane, also from UNC.
Wolak lost 7-5 earlier in the year while Stewart lost by fall to Kane.
Hokies up 75.5 to 57.5 over Puppies right now
Pitt in third at 53.5
what possible point spread is left? 3 points in each final and 2 in each consolation, right? If NC state got max points in each remaining and we got the least would we still have a shot? 18 points would be losing 6 finals to them
Church in sudden death
AND GET'S THE SV to take 3rd.
I don't know anything about wrestling... why do we not attempt to ride and just allow the others to get a free escape point?
Shooting for Tech Fall or to avoid a reversal.
what is a tech fall and I am guessing a reversal is a lot of points?
Reversal is two points
Tech fall is winning match by 15+ points and counts 5 for team score
Tech Fall (TF) is a 15+ point win
Major Decision (MD) is an 8-14 point win
https://www.ncaa.com/news/wrestling/article/2020-09-16/how-college-wrest...
Wolak 0-0 after 1st
Wolak trails 1-0 after 2
1-1 in SV
Going to ride outs
Wolak up 2-1 after first RO
Wolak loses in 2 RO 4-2
Stewart gets eliminated with a last second take down and will not get the invite to the NCAAs.
Still likely to get invite as there are spots awarded after guaranteed spots. Will knock him back in bracket pretty far though
Wolak loses in OT3
Hokies. 77.5
Puppies 59.5
Pitt 53.5
Smith up 4-1 going into the 3rd
Interesting that 5th place match does not count towards team scores
Smith wins 4-2
Hokies. 79.5
Puppies 59.5
Pitt 53.5
Smith wins, taking 3rd and qualifying for the NCAAs
9 Hokies qualify for the NCAAs.
The lone Hokie that is not an AQ is Stewart, though there are 5 at large bids in 184.
Hokies cheering for Scott from UNC right now at 141
Scott wins to keep Puppies off board
So the 10 finals slots there are 6 hokies and 5 NCSU .... minimum points for VT is 42 and maximum for NCSU is 50.... now I'm not sure how the scoring works for bonus points but seems like NCSU can only gain at most 8 points in the finals
also assumes no points for 5th
No points for 5th place. Was watching one of those and it said it below score that result does not count towards team score
I'm sure it's to keep teams from sandbagging matches to get extra points by having wrestlers in more matches.
NC State can earn an additional 10 points for falls, forfeits, defaults, or DQs.
I could be entirely wrong, but I think we've clinched.
unless I am missing something about how the scoring works and they already gave 7 points to every finalist and just haven't given 3 points to the winner... that would let ncsu get 15 points to our 0 in a worst case
Finals start at 8pm
so did they finish up everything but finals? Where do I see the scores leading into that?
https://theacc.com/feature/wrestling-championship#schedule
Scroll down to live results. Then click team scores
Hipolito up 3-2 going into the 3rd
Hipolito with the Championship
Hokies 82.5
Puppies 59.5
Pitt 53.5
So this means that really the finalists have 3 points up for grabs and already have credit for the 7? also means in ncsu wins all 4 remaining and we lose all 5 chances we still win
Go Augustine
There it is, announced we clinched
184 final has been awesome
Even better Fishback loses
Huzzah!
Is it possible that NC State doesn't finish 2nd?
Pitt needs to win heavyweight and ncsu needs to lose out
ncsu gets 3rd if VT wins 133
Here we go Jimmy Mullen up
0-0 after 1
Pitzer should have been hit with a stall there
Mullen gets lucky after deciding to go neutral forces a stall calls.
1-1 in SV
Mullen loses in SV
Ventresca up at 125
Ventresca trails 1-0 after 2
1-1 going to SV
Ventresca wins but challenged
What a bunch of BS. Officials saying they looked at it on their own and wave off takedown so NC State has their challenge back. Now Hokies had to challenge
Now Hokies challenge is good and Ventresca wins. What a clown show
Totally crazy!
McGonagle up next. Faces Orine from NC State
0-0 after 1
Trails 1-0 after 2
McGonagle gets reversal leads 2-1
Here we go again. Official review even though NC STALL threw brick Not a challenge. BS
2-2. Looked like McGonagle had a takedown but ruled out of bounds
In SV McGonagle with take down to win but of course challenged
And now it's an "independent review:
McGonagle wins
And with that, NC State cannot take 2nd.
Now time for Bama Sam
Already with a UVA challenge
Challenge successful. Latona trails 3-0
Cedeno leads 3-1
Trails 3-2 after 2
Ugh, trails 7-2 plus RT
Latona loses 8-6
Henson up to close it out
0-0 after 1
Henson having cut above right eye patched
Henson up 1-0 after 2
1-1 going to SV
Henson closes season 18-0.
Hokies 91.5
Pitt 63.5
NC State 62.5
Glorious
TJ Stewart did not get an at large bid
Not surprised. To go from wrestling in the semifinals last year to not even qualifying is a shocking turn. I really hope he is back in a Hokie singlet next year and uses this as motivation.
