has VT charged for Spring games in the past? I haven't been to one in quite a while but I remember them being free admission

Onward and upward

They have been free in the past. This year we need to money to help pay into the NIL account (at least I hope that is where the money is going). 20,000 @ $20 per head would be a nice chunk into that fund.

I do love the free market that CFB has become where we pay more to watch a worse product

Bingo

some times, there was one that they used the money for one of the athletes that had some medical issues. so we all paid like $5

What is a little pizza money? Laundry money? These kids should get money for their jersey being sold in the bookstore... Oh they make 7 figure salaries and the fans have to pay at every fucking turn? oops

This was obviously coming and is the reason as compared to Texas, schools like VT will probably retain a Spring Game at least for the near future. It's a revenue opportunity.

It has been a while since I have been but my memory is in the past that admission was free with a food donation.

We've gone from helping to feed the legitimately underprivileged to creating a slush fund for "underprivileged" athletes with private chefs, top-level training facilities, free higher education and no-cost tutoring.

Definitely feels like forward progress as a society.

Agreed. When you see in the news that the starting qb at the University of Miami has had his Lambo, his Mercedes and his girlfriends Mercedes stolen something has gone really, really wrong with college athletics.

I'm sorry, what?

If Beck plays well for Miami this year, we should go after him in the portal for 26. Would be a good get potentially.

As his Lambo and Mercedes were stolen, you think we could bribe him with a used Ford Mustang?

(add if applicable) /s

The pinto would be more rare than his Lambo if there was actually one that is still running.

Go Hokies!!

To be fair, I'm pretty sure Miami was doing that in the 90s as well. It's just out in the open now.

You gotta watch your GFs around those locals.

If you play it, they will win.

It has been free regardless. Donations were encouraged not required.

Also, unlike Texas, local businesses rely on these events for revenue. It's not the same in Austin, Columbus, LA, Miami, Dallas, etc

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. I swear the majority of folks on this website have argued for years that Tech should institute a very minor cost for the Spring Game to generate even just a little revenue.

Yeah I definitely remember discussions about how charging $5 or $10 for the spring game would be an easy win for raising money

for clarity, I'm not complaining at all. I just didn't know if we had been charging for a while and I just wasn't aware or if this is a new thing.

$10 doesn't break the bank for me.

That said, I do think at some point the product needs to really improve if the department expects to make any money off of it. We probably should have been charging a modest fee for the spring game for a long time now. It would have helped a little bit more back when we were actually good and had something to play for. Now that the ACC is dead-league-walking and is completely shut out of the playoff in the near future anyway there's very little to play for and, therefore, little excitement from the fanbase. Too little too late, IMO.

Onward and upward

I thought last year was the first year with a cover. I am fine with a nominal fee like $10, that seems reasonable for the amount of entertainment fans will receive.

I do think, however, that they should waive it for kids under a certain age though.

They charged $5 in 2022

It costs money to put this thing on. It's absolutely the best decision to charge for it.
$5 should be the minimum entry for any of our sports events.

$5 is fine, $10 I think is starting to push it. $25 for parking probably isn't enough (parking lots, even surface lots, cost a lot to build and maintain plus the lost productivity of some of the lots which are empty 350+ days a year).

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

Pretty sure almost parking areas on the VT campus are used daily, especially during the regular school semesters.

Go Hokies!!

Are you sure the lots behind the SEZ are? And Chicken Hill?

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

The one behind the SEZ is typically pretty full when school is in session. 7 days a week. Chicken Hill maybe a little less so except for practices and for Rec sports on the hill.

Also Chicken Hill gets the cars for WBB and MBB games that don't have a game parking pass. Never not seen cars in Chicken Hill, though I'm not there during normal school hours.

Go Hokies!!

Was in town for the softball game Saturday (3/8). There were plenty of spaces in lot 2 (behind SEZ) and lot 5 (chicken hill).
