Hokies are getting mentioned in pursuit of players. Here are a few. Will update with prior stats a bit later.

Is expected to visit this week
This one is a shocker: Kentucky WBB 6-foot-7 freshman Clara Silva has entered the transfer portal with a "do not contact" tag.
Silva averaged 4 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks in 12.5 minutes per outing on 56.5 percent shooting this season across 31 games played.

Her coming to VT would be poetic justice I think.
What does that even mean? Why would somebody enter the portal, yet not want teams to contact them?
Two reasons
1) You already know where you are going
2) It's become the norm that it means coaches should talk to the players agent and not the player
I want to believe that it's because she already knows she's coming back here.
Another benefit of the "NIL agent"....it makes in-season tampering so much easier.
They've already been contacted (tampered with) and decided where they're going
Add this to Whit Babcocks Quotes of Shame:
Either you shorted the program for football or you don't know what you are doing.
Either should get you fired for the results.
70 F-ING %
I am starting to think it might be time to look for an AD in the transfer portal
Whit has a "best in class" coaching interview and identification process, but I guess his NIL process needs work. lol.
I realize its just a pull quote with no context but I mean... It seems like he is just as tired of the BS as we are. If its bumming you out so much Whit, the door is over there. Either do something about it or move on - don't just bitch and moan into the void. That's what message boards are for.
The ultimate Quiet Part out Loud now. This is 100% not NIL. True NIL has no allocation. If Emma Lemley is a media star in christiansburg, she should get her bag, right? What a fucking joke. They aren't pretending anymore. It's time for contracts and a CBA- end the charade.
Is anyone still pretending? This just is and has been the state of things. The phrase "NIL" has become more inaccurate I guess, but it has just been a stand-in for paying players for years now.
Agree on contracts though. If it's going to be a business, make it a business.
There is no "true NIL". Never was.
That would have required actual rules and some kind of enforcement.
It's "pay to play". And always was.
The last part is almost laughably wrong lol
Yes there were the bagmen and all that and that it was pay-for-play, but the NCAA was using amateurism rules to absolutely and indiscriminately ruin kids for the "true NIL" -- signing autographs for money, monetizing a youtube channel, blah blah blah in addition to the bagmen pay-for-play like the Reggie Bush punishment
It was the legal challenges on the "true NIL" grounds that opened up the floodgates to legitimize the thinly veiled pay-for-play compensation
The inability to separate them is what has led to the current mess, and the NCAA having a heavy hand on the common sense "true NIL" things is what led to court rulings against them. But how you codify it in a way that is both legal and enforceable is very sticky precisely because of how easy it is turn "true NIL" into "pay for play".
Like I said, there was never "true NIL".
"There was never true NIL" is NCAA-level of willful ignorance of any nuance
Either you shorted the program for football or you don't know what you are doing.
Do you think Whit doesn't know what he's doing? I don't.
If you're Virginia Tech, you know your identity is football. If Duke is beating you in football, you got problems. You do need to be doing football better. If Whit could pull off football, WBB, and MBB, he'd be a rock star.
I think the difficulty is that there is no budget for NIL Football MBB, WBB. Let alone BaseB softball and Olympic. We don't have the volume of alumni for it.
Someone is going to have to pick winners and losers sports. I do not envy that guy at all.
It's also an arms race I am not willing to get into when the players I have "invested" in are likely to leave after each year. Athletic donations are not going to the next generation of Hokies, they are going to free agents who probably won't consider themselves alumni even if they graduate from Tech. I will give my money to the college of engineering to help Hokies.
Maryland made that calculation in 2012.
His statement to the reporters was that he didn't short basketball for football and those that believed that were reading too much social media but in the same conversation says we were 70% off Clemson NIL for basketball.
He is either lying about what he put in football or his staff clearly were clueless on what it would take to fund basketball. Either way it's a bad look. Quite frankly, it was just another blunder in a long line of dumb shit that has come out of his mouth.
Who in prepping for this conversation thought it was a good idea to even disclose that we were 70% short of Clemson? In no way shape or form does that give a good look for HIS athletic department or positively impact the fan base view of how things are being managed.
Do I think he does a terrible job every day? No. Do I think he routinely doesn't seem prepared for these conversations he set up? Absolutely.
It really is remarkable how consistently he manages to say the worst possible thing at the worst possible time to say it.
Whether he knows what he's doing or not, it makes him look like he doesn't. Clemson's basketball history is comparable to ours. They should never, ever be 70% ahead of us in anything related to that sport.
Wenzel, Baker and Petersen have all announced they are returning for Womens basketball
We take the good with the bad. Maybe Carleigh can learn in the off season to make a layup?
Indiana had EVERY PLAYER go in the portal.
Did they have a coaching change?
Yes, DeVries is coming in from WVU.
Did you say Hoosier or Who's here?
Buzz Williams rumored to be going to Maryland if Willard officially goes to Villanova
Can't believe Maryland can cough up the $$ to leave endless $$ aTm. Especially as a midwestern guy.
Wait I thought Buzz was a "Texas guy" and aTm was home?
Apparently has worn out his welcome mat appears to be the sentiment.
There's a pattern here......
Yep, 5 to 6 year shelf life at any one place.
Marquette 6 years
Hokies 5 years
Texas A&M 6 years
Funny how that seems to happen everywhere he goes...
Kentucky starting to see the kind of guy kenny brooks is Forcing out fan favorite senior
What a douche.
Yep was just reading a whole trove of posts from Kentucky fans in outrage. I chuckled.
All the starters from Robert Morris tournament team are in the portal
Rodney Rice in the portal again...comedy
or tragedy?
Tragedy would have been watching Rice play for Buzz
Not that weird considering the coaching turnover, but the modern-day transfer environment is indeed a comedy lol
With zero exaggeration- this is every player in the NFL/NBA/MLB/NHL a free agent after every season. Mahomes, LeBron, Ohtahni, etc. They are free to go wherever they want after each year. That is what college football and basketball are today. Now, of course Mahomes is free to sign 1 year deals, but that hurts his brand, security, injury protection, etc. Also top athletes want to win, which is why they stick with a team built around them. But what we have today would be every NFL player free to leave this offseason and go literally anywhere else.
I'm pretty sure everyone on TKP agrees with this take.
Sadly I don't think it's a take, I believe it's reality.
ODU bound?
Most hyped 12 and 2 guy in the history of mens college hoops. Landers Nolley is jealous of this hype.
Signed with USC-w
MJ Collins in the portal again too.
He's still looking for a school who can show him how to shoot 3s 😂
Would really love to know the motivation here?
By all means had a reasonably successful season at Vandy. Played less minutes but was significantly more efficient.
I mean, let's be honest, at a P4 level, Collins is a nice 6th-7th man. That's his apex.
If his plan is to go to a lower level (or he was encouraged to do so), then I guess I get it.
I just feel like lots of these kids are getting awful and unrealistic advice and making short-sighted decisions based on it.
He's not an NBA talent. He's getting paid to play basketball and a free education at an elite university...just don't get where the grass is greener here.
More green in the bag. Free education is nothing.
Women's hoops just picked up Sophie Swanson from Purdue
New threads for new players pls
I'm feeling a bit antsy about the men's team since we have 9 open spots and haven't filled a single one yet. I know it's still early, but I also know that 20% of the top 100 in the portal have already committed elsewhere...
May want to temper expectations. I feel we can get a few good portal adds, but might be another challenging year
Oh I'm not expecting much improvement at all haha, just concerned that we haven't nabbed anybody from the portal yet when we have a lot of nabbing left to do.
Well. We just got 1. AJ Hansberry from WVU. I know I'm supposed to start a new thread, but just landing in Dublin.
Part of my reason for commenting was that I knew we'd get a commit as soon as I posted 😂 Had to get that ball rolling for CMY lol
We need 5-6 transfers right? This feels like it is taking too long...
As many as 8 actually for a 15 man roster this year
Not enough $$ to buy a 15-man roster. Get a couple walk-on types to accept scholarships and a few Hardees coupons and you get to 15.
Well. 70% of the top talent in the transfer portal has now committed to their new schools. Granted, we did land one of them, but seeing as how we still have 8 open spots and haven't done much else yet, kinda feels like we're cooked next year.
Far from accurate. Only 27% of portal entries have committed that came ftom D1 programs. 37 of the top 100 are still not committed. Take into account there are 350 programs. Even if you just look at P4. That's 70 programs. That means less of the Top 100 have committed than there are P4 schools. There is still a ton of talent out there uncommitted. Coach Young probably needs 4-5 in top 500 in portal. There were almost 1000 entries from D1 programs. Almost 2000 total.
I see what you mean, but I am also not "far from accurate." 72 of the top 100 players in the portal are already committed according to 247's portal tracker. Half of #100-200 are gone too.
4 or 5 guys in the top 500 is not going to turn things around for VT unfortunately, as that's essentially worse than what we got in the portal last year (Schutt, Burham, Lawal, Brown Jr were all between #228-376). For example — Rechsteiner is #219 in the portal. Let that sink in — there are only like 80 guys left in the portal who scouts think are better than Rechsteiner, who was mediocre at best for us. Hence, we are cooked already and just don't know it yet lol.
For comparison, UVA is going through just as much turnover as us, if not more, and has already landed 4 guys from the portal, the lowest of whom is #207.
UVA lost one of their top portal commits today. Duke Miles decommitted.
Maybe he is looking for somewhere else in Virginia 😂 I thought it was a bit weird because all 4 guys they had picked up were guards.
That was a major factor in his decision. Felt they saturated his spot which would have reduced his playing time.
Visiting this weekend
Riley Allenspach
4 🌟 90 rating out of Samford
6' 11, 247 lbs Center
243rd in Portal Ranking
Definitely need to get him signed.
Pairing him with Hansberry or Lawal would be a big win.
247 # for a ceenterr seems a little light, hope he can add some beef.
For reference Wessler is 250 lbs at 7 ft. Poteat reportedly was 260 on ESPN profile but not sure I buy that this year as he was said to have cut ten pounds in his offseason conditioning
Roy Brow during my student days in the '80s was 6'11" and 195 lbs soaking wet!
Committed to George Mason
Got to hope that was a coaches decision ...no bueno if we are losing battles to George Mason.
Seeing smoke we have another commit to mens team but no name yet
A few other sites have suggested Izaiah Pasha, G, Delaware.
Yep seeing that now. He was on campus this weekend so makes sense
It's official. Link.
Lawal just posted he will enter the NBA draft but thankfully says if he returns he will be in Blacksburg
Good- go earn your money in a professional league. Imagine that. Kudos young man.
Sounds like we have another basketball commit incoming. Sounds like it's women's side. Not sure if it's Samuels, the reserve from UConn but saw she was supposed to visit. If it is her, her sister is the #9 recruit in Class of 27.
Either way would be awesome
Seeing hints of a 6'1 shooter signing with WBB today but no official announcement yet
Lani White has transferred to Utah
She wanted to be closer to home for her last year. I can't really blame her but the team will miss her.
Yeah and was looking at Masters programs as well. No hard feelings on this one.
