Hokies add Transfer DT

Elhadj Fall, formerly of Georgia Southern, is now a Hokie.

He is 6-3, 290 and has 2 years of eligibility remaining.

49 career tackles, 9.5 TFLs, 6.5 sacks.

Hokies now have 10 scholarship DTs, 4 of whom have transferred in this year.

Hokies!

10 DTs seems like too many for a 3-down front

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

6-4, 250lbs...doesn't fits the mold of a P5 DT. Maybe a standup edge / OLB.

EDIT: Was going by 247, didn't realize he added a bunch of weight at Georgia Southern. He listed as 290 on their roster...maybe signals we're going to a 4-3 or Siefkes felt the need to recruit over people.

Only one more and we can roll out the all-DT goal line beef package

Seems like an SAT question/dad joke in here.

DT is to Pry what RB is to Fuente.

Would rather have 4 B+ DTs than 1 A-, 1 B-, and 2 C+ RBs.

Granted, Fuente only ever had a B- or better running back once.

Fuente only ever had a B- or better rubbing back once.

This could be the most disturbing comment ever made on TKP...

I'd settle for a one-time B- back rub.

Careful. That's how my second kid happened.

We need to work on the team messaging massaging if we have more than one D rubbing back.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

On the contrary, this is exactly the kind of massaging I need to wake up to on a Monday morning.

a B- rubbing back for A+ dongle game

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

10 DTs mean that you are throwing spaghetti on the wall and hoping 5 of them can stick/play.

I think we might see more 3 DT-type bodies on the field with Djonkam as a stand up edge this year.

USCe coaches must be yanking out their hair right now trying to figure out what the hell to prepare for.

They aren't a top 10 program, but they are an SEC team and top 25ish program. Great opportunity for Pry to get a good win. They aren't elite, they are beatable.

After 3 seasons, Pry still doesn't have a signature (or even good) win. Starting off 2025 with a win over Shane's likely top 25 USCe would be cathartic.

Every second counts

and in typical VT fashion we would lose to Vandy again the next week...

Has VT had a good win since OSU?

Yes. Every time we beat UVA is a "good" win.

"Quality" win is another issue.

The 34-3 smackdown of #17 UNC led by Mitch Trubisky was fun.

The 24-3 beating of #19 FSU was fun.

The 17-10 defeat of #10 UNC with 2 NFL starting QBs on it's roster was fun.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

we should've just told Fuente he was playing UNC again every week

The stint of ESPN/NFL/the media powers that be completely overrating tobacco road QBs made our wins look a lot better than they probably were.

Hokie football used to be fun!! Let's just get back to that - seems like a low bar.

31-14 over #22 Duke with Daniel Jones in 2018 was fun

I'd argue we have not had a "good" win in many, many years. Several people have replied above with fun wins, but I'm not sure any of them ended up really being good wins. They are listing wins over teams that were ranked at the time, but as was pointed out with the UNC QBs being over-rated, none of those teams were that good by the time the year ended. I mean, when is the last time we beat a team that was ranked at the end of the season? I'm sure I'm missing someone, but I honestly cannot remember one for certain since the OSU win. Maybe Miami or someone else was in Fuente's first year. We did beat some solid teams that year.

But coming back to fun vs. good, beating UVa by 30 points is fun, but it's really a good win the way I think of it. Good wins mean you beat a good team. Been a long time since that has happened.

I suspect some may be evaluated for swapping to OL.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I have been wondering if they are going to swap Priester.

or Hanchuk

So...and I find this stunning...thus far VT has added 43 new bodies since the end of last season. 20 HS signees and and 23 transfers...and we probably aren't done.

edit: and we've added #44

This appears to mean regression is coming, but when you turn over half the roster from an average team, how bad can it be?

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

I think back to Pry's statements that he'll build through HS recruiting and fill holes via the portal. Hokies had 2 transfer out that they would have like to have retained and have hit portal for 23...so far. That's A LOT of holes. They've also hit the portal for 3 primary coaches and a few other assistants.

I don't know if any of this is great, but yeah, how bad can it be?

If there are that many holes in Year 3, I think Pry can only blame himself for the recruiting failures.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Bingo. When 30 kids are "passed on the depth chart" every year, you didn't recruit well in the first place now did you?

Or you didn't develop them, which is still in Pry.

That's A LOT of holes

VT Football transition from last year to this year:

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

and we are now at 24

Adding 40 new kids to the roster means the ones you had aren't good. Have to bring in more top end talent.

As long as the new talent is an upgrade and he is recruiting better than before the team will get better.

The talent I am talking about are guys like APR, Tuten, Peebles, Strong. I have yet to see anything close as replacements for 2025. I am talking about top end difference makers here. Not just roster guys.

Top end difference makers make a difference. APR single handedly shifted momentum in a few games this fall. I wish I had a better understanding of what improving the floor does for a roster. Does your floor really even matter? I assume it does, just based on our O Line this year. But how much does it matter?

I think the floor does matter. That's your depth. If the next man up is of a higher caliber, then the team overall is better.

Any good floor guy will be here exactly one season and then leave.

This is actually the one thing I can reasonably hope on with the OL. If the OL becomes solid - not great, just pretty good - it could really improve the team. That could boost the running game and passing game even with the loss of players like Tuten. Could easily see us regressing in several positions, but if the OL play is solid, it could make up for all of that and more. No way to know if the OL will really be much better or not, but there is the hope that it could and that it will make a difference.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

To be fair, did we expect all these guys to be difference makers when the transfers were announced? Same could be true for those new transfers yet to play.

Do I ever or will I ever expect D2 and FCS transfers to all be Bayshul Tuten? in 2025/modern times? Absolutley not. In fact for every Tuten, there are 10 guys that never get on the field. Do I expect the eastern michigan guy to be as good as florida transfer APR? nope. I live in reality.

We don't need D2/FCS guys to be Tuten, just good enough to play P4 ball, which every year there are a handful of guys that are that good. Same with G5, they don't have to lead the nation in sacks, just be P4 caliber. Which again there are lots of G5 guys that are better than the G5. Again we need to correct the misses with lower level guys that were misses the other way.

Getting on the field in P4 ball and just P4 "caliber"- gets you a whole bunch of 6-6 seasons.
