virginia-tech-adds-qb-depth-with-oklahoma-state-transfer-garret-rangel
Interesting....
Yeah adding schlee as a depth piece made sense but I'm not sure that I get this move unless they're uncertain the Kyron is going to be ready to go. Pop should be as ready as he's going to be at QB2 this long in the program.
I think both of these items are concerns that need some attention. This seems apt to me.
Given our ~20 year track record of any returning QB who played a meaningful number of snaps the prior year, at best, staying the same year-over-year (and often getting worse year-over-year), I am not opposed to bringing in another starting QB from the outside every year.
Ideally, we will have a QB coach that can improve a returning QB, but it's been so long since we have had that at VT that I'll believe it when I see it. At some point, it will happen. Hopefully in 2025. But I'm not going to hold my breath.
We've got so many other holes to fill on this team that I don't see any point of using the portal to go 3 deep on QB. We're not even 2 deep at every position.
If you want to have a team, you must be strong at quarterback. I read this as we need someone who can either push the existing field, or maybe our existing qbs can't run the new guys offense. Either way, we will be in for a guy for 26 that can hit an open receiver. I know the line has been an issue, but a 3 step drop and hitting a receiver is going to be huge in this guy's offense. Not being pessimistic, but tech has wasted some talent at wide receiver that past 2 seasons
And you must be seen to be strong at QB, if you want to have a team that will stay, or that will transfer in.
Rangel was originally recruited by Phil Montgomery when he was at Tulsa so there is a connection there. Given how we burn through QBs not a bad thing to have another one with actual game experience.
Drones will be gone after next season. Need a Qb1 and QB2 for the following year. With NIL, who know how long they stay....
Yes, but we have AJ Brand and Keldon Ryan on the roster as well. There is no reason to worry about redshirts and eligibility management with the portal and any little challenge to the rules getting upheld these days. So why tie up a scholly and NIL money on another QB? And a one year backup at that.
Mostly because Rosters are now expanded to 105 players so essentially why not???
I think there is a very good chance that many of the new transfers over the past couple weeks have minimal to no impact..
You don't need 105 players to field a team of 22 players when the NFL does it with 53. Another totally ridiculous rule change of the NIL era.
Not really. Hokies were at 120 or so counting walk ons. 85 scholarships.
Now it's up to 105 scholarships but roster max.
Nothing preventing schools with going with less players. The 105 is a max. There is no minimum.
I think some of these are getting scout team players also.
The NFL roster is tight, but they can have a practice squad of up to 16 players. And they start with around 80ish or so for camps and dwindle it down. They also have to sign players mid-season (especially kickers) due to injuries. I guess college could do it this way too, but probably a little harder to implement with enrollment and the guise of student athlete.
The larger rosters of college allow for scout teams, player development of underclassmen, and forgiveness of misevaluations of recruits. These are less important at the NFL level.
I do agree that 105 is a bit oversized and something closer to 80 (or even less) would yield more balance and parity.
There's one big difference, though, between college football and the NFL that would have an impact on the numbers, and that's the fact that NFL players are fully grown men coming off years of strength/agility training, while college football is employing, at the rookie level, high school kids. If college football were to adopt something similar to the NFL in terms of roster (53-man roster with a 16-man practice squad), you're going to have a lot more negative impacts in terms of incoming players not being ready to play because their body needs more growth and development. That's probably why the limit was set at 85 scholarships in the first place, because you need a place to stash those players that have potential, but still need growth.
That said, I wouldn't mind seeing a lower roster limit, because as we've seen historically, that would tend to increase parity. Though that would have to be balanced with some sort of transfer limitations, or you'll continue to see G5 and lower P4 teams be feeder teams for the P2, as the former teams take those freshmen that need more development time, and the P2 grab them when they've matured.
Yea, I'm with you 100%. Need to balance the college needs but also prevent Blue Blood stashing, and also help out the lower tier teams. And although the portal helps even this out a bit, it's still true that every blue blood has a stack of reserves not getting playing time that can meaningfully contribute somewhere. And the instability of the lower tier teams due to portal transfer just sucks for fandom. Balance is needed but I doubt we ever get it.
One thing is pretty universal: The oligarchs, the blue bloods, the elites, the Haves, whatever you want to call them, will make sure the rules will sway in their favor. At least until there is a disruption, coup, or some paradigm shift.
Like the new 16 team proposed playoff with the B1G and SEC getting 4 spots each?
Let's be honest though. As things stand they are going to get 4 each in anyway barring an apocalypse. More likely they get 6 each at a minimum
Yea I don't understand it. Maybe it's a negotiation tactic of some sort. But I don't think there's been a season in the last decade where the current SEC and B10 didn't have 4 teams each in the top 16.
Pry talked quite a bit about this at he Tailgate Tour event on Monday night. He mentioned that they sought out an OC that could run an offense suited to Drones (and that Drones loves this offense). He also mentioned they would be picking up another QB transfer to compete specifically with Watson for backup. Pry's reasoning was that they liked Watson a lot, but that he has been inconsistent. Adding competition would make both Watson and the team stronger. And that was the night BEFORE Rangel was announced. Pry, and especially Moore, were more open about players than I have seen in these events in previous years. Gotta give the people something, I guess.
No need in this era of college football not to be transparent about players. There's no secret that they can leave anytime or be replaced if they aren't cutting it.
Hopefully he can Rangel up some wins for us.
Stop
Yeah give it up Soup, there's not a very wide Rangel of puns to be made.
a Garret range of Pronunciations as well.
