Article out today where the NC Central head coach accused a Virginia Tech assistant of trying to get his starting running back into the portal during a game from the sideline. The article doesn't name the assistant.
At a media event Friday, North Carolina Central coach Trei Oliver was asked about the most ridiculous moments he's faced in coaching, and his response set off alarms across the state of Virginia.
Oliver said he found a Virginia Tech assistant coach on the sideline for one of North Carolina Central's games last year, and suggested the coach was there to lure his star running back, J'Mari Taylor, into the transfer portal.
"Virginia Tech was actually on my sideline recruiting our running back," Oliver told reporters, according to WRAL News. "That was pretty bold. I couldn't believe it."
Oliver didn't name the running back, but he said the player later transferred to the University of Virginia. Taylor was a first-team all-conference player who is now on Virginia's roster.
Oliver said he needed assistant coaches to calm him down on the sideline, noting several told him, "he's just down here visiting.'"
"But I knew what it was," Oliver said.
Virginia Tech released a statement Saturday saying this was the first time the issue had been raised and that the school would investigate.
"This is the first time the issue has been brought to our attention, and no concern has previously been shared with us through any formal channel," the statement read. "Virginia Tech takes all NCAA rules seriously and is committed to conducting our program with integrity. We are reviewing the matter internally and will address any findings appropriately."
Taylor, a graduate transfer, will be part of the Virginia backfield rotation this season, and Oliver said he'll be rooting for his former player at his new school -- particularly when the Cavaliers play Virginia Tech on Nov. 29.
"Thank God he went to UVA," Oliver said, "and UVA is going to beat the smoke out of them other folks."

That last paragraph makes the rest of it sound like comical fanfic
At least we are big doggin' somebody!
They do seem to be assembling a decent team with Elliot being a desirable coach. Let's hope we keep up being the big dog in that relationship.
Sounds pretty weaksauce in my opinion
Regardless of what else happens this season, I'm pretty fucking confident we will smoke UVA
I really hope a Hokie is going to C'ville in November and will make a "Fuck Trei Oliver and his shitty RB" poster to hold up when VT makes it 5 straight L's.
love the sentiment but too on the nose. if you're gonna hold up a sign lets go with something like
"Hey, #X! Portal to VT has now closed!"
or
" Thanks Coach Oliver! Looks like you sending players to UVA is working out great for us! Thank God."
or
"That moment you realize you actually sent your RB to Lane North" with a pic of Oliver looking confused.
I call BS. Especially for a player that is at UVA. I doubt we were recruiting for UVA.
I mean why not recruit players you dont want to your rival?
Good, this is the new way to win in college football. Go get (pay) the guys that will help you win and bend every rule to do it.
At the risk of sounding like a Michigan fan, literally everyone is doing this.
That being said, given the current state of VT Athletics, it surprises me 0% that we seemingly handled this situation in such a ham-handed way that it has come to light in the media.
So his own assistant coaches had to cool him off, saying that our coach was just there visiting.
Sounds conspitatorial
Literally just comes across like sour grapes for no apparent reason?
Can we just laugh at the premise that its even possible to recruit a player during a game he is playing? If you are going to actually recruit and tamper you would do it after the game... this doesnt meet the funny looks test
100% percent this was a made up story. It simply isn't possible to recruit a player who is actively playing.
We all know tech does not have the support staff / resources to be pulling something like this haha. This is a big dog move.
Honestly kinda sounds like the coach got confused about which school he meant to say and accidentally said virginia tech when he meant virginia then had to roll with it
So he actually didn't care that his player was recruited into the portal, he just cares it was VT and not UVA. People who talk horseshit just can't stop themselves from talking to the point where they reveal their hypocrisy. 🤣
This!! 1000%
My first thought reading this:
"Alright, we're finally playing the game"
Then seeing the RB went to UVA:
"Shit, we suck at the game"
In Pry's defense, we did get three better RBs in the transfer cycle per 247.
But yes, we can't play the game well either.
And I wonder if he was looking at us then saw who else was coming to VT at his position and decided to go elsewhere.
lol entirely manufactured
I could see it being one of the 300 jock sniffers you have to hire now because Saban did it. Resources you know. What do they call them? "Support staff"? I could see a loser in a VT polo om Pry's payroll because we have to be part of the pissing contest doing this. Not a "real" coach though .
You'd think a head coach would have more to pay attention to IN THE MIDDLE OF A FOOTBALL GAME!
I still think he meant to say Virginia. Or some random guy was on the sidelines in a VT polo and Trei lost his damn mind over nothing.
Even if everything he said was true, then I'm glad we got assistant coaches, or support staff, or random guys in polos trying to get good players on our team. Until some semblance of order is restored to college football, who gives a rat's ass about minor infractions and nit picky recruiting violations? What are they gonna do? Nothing. They're not gonna do fucking anything!
Recruiting NC Central players as opposed to UNC players fits our profile at the moment. Sorry had to say it, because it's true.
Should have pulled a Connor Stallions.
For some reason this reminded me of the Jim Carrey version of the Grinch when he said, "Nice kid....baaaad judge of character."
Pry had this to say Thursday about the accusation:
He also said no disciplinary action is expected. The coach in question was visiting an assistant athletic director at NCCU on the day in question.
As investigated, the other coach was talking out his ass and making shit up.
if it was penn st or clemson, he probably would've bragged about it
