Duke has scraped up 3 points so far against powerhouse ELON through 20 minutes. Elon just tied it at 3.
NC St fairing better against ECU.
Boise State getting shellacked by USF. What a difference a year made there.

My Cowboy fan friends absolutely losing it.

Rutgers in a shootout with Ohio. 31-31 going into 4th.
Never would have called that one
USF sent their true freshman QB in as the punter for this beautiful fake and Boise (not a state) has been shit since it happened.
Like Chase Mumma against Clemson.
Who is now a DC for Tennessee Tech.
https://www.ttusports.com/sports/fball/coaches/Mummau_Chase
Did he only play 1 play while at VT? That 1 pass?
Looks like he had a pass against Oklahoma State too.
Elon makes it 10-10 with 3 minutes to go in 1st half. Power football from Duke
That NIL payout Duke made is looking like the dumbest investment this offseason by any college program.
Duke turned it on in 4th quarter. Wolfpack eeked it out. Vick debut was a dud.
State sucks ass. I'm a State grad who's followed them the last 10 years. They freakin suck. Can't wait till we beat them in Raleigh. One of our easiest games of the year
I've always had a little soft spot for them because, in ACC terms, they have a pretty loyal fanbase for a program that seems incapable of breaking through their mediocre ceiling.
I agree but it would be so easy. Just move on from the mediocre Northern Illinois coach when he's 4-20 (or whatever) vs P4 teams that finished over .500 in year 7
If anyone understands rooting against your alma mater, it's me. So I do not begrudge your stance.
Idk if they can do much better than Dave Doeren. They've literally had one 10 win season in program history. Doeren has had them finished ranked 5 times. He's the only coach to do that in program history (although Lou Holtz did finished ranked 3 times in 4 years).
I just think it's really hard to work any of the FBS Carolina jobs because there's so many schools you compete with (for players and for fan interest) in such a small radius.
Not to mention VT, Clemson and SCar close by looking for players.
Army-Tarleton St has been a hell of a game in the 1st half
And Tarleton St wins in double OT
GT with two unforced fumbles on their first two drives. Ugly.
Plus a pick. That's a quality 8 minutes there.
That pick was BS though, definitely PI that wasn't called.
The fact that GT is only down 7-0 after 3 TO's on the first 3 drives is nuts
Don't know why GT is even trying to pass. Colorado cannot and will not stop the run game.
Beside the horrid start, GT looks solid but King has already taken multiple big hits...he's gonna be banged up all season playing like this.
He looks like he is actually injured right now.
Wake praying to hold on up 10-9 on Kennesaw St.
#goACC
Prime time just lost that game for his team. Two timeouts in your pocket and you don't use either one of them.
His QB bring inaccurate lost them that game.
Or the inability to stop the rush.
Has anyone else notice bootleg games on their YouTube account? I though I had accidentally bought YTTV until I noticed the feed was from Dallas/Fort Worth!!
Am I the only one that thinks GT didn't look great and Colorado looked horrid? It's a worse GT than last year where it's the Haynes show they've got pretty much nothing on defense and 2 players on offense and the OL lets King defend for himself on any drop back.
I think a single game with no context makes this hard to determine. It could be they are both good but GT was better (unlikely) or that they were both bad and GT was a little better or that they are both meh
Fair I'm just looking at things to grab at but yeah week one doesn't offer a ton of context
Most people expected Colorado to take a step back after losing a lot of production.
I think GT is a bit overhyped this offseason, but I think they'll be a tough out for any opponent.
GT came into this season kind've like us last year. Returning some quality players in a conference that can create an easier schedule. They rely on Haynes too much. I doubt he will play every game this season.
Not sure where else to put this, don't think it deserves its own post so I'll put it here. Lee Corso made college football accessible to everyone. Especially to a 14 year old kid who loved football but was just discovering college football because his mom's cousin had just become the defensive coordinator at Maryland and we bought season tickets. I discovered Virginia Tech through that same cousin and his wife, who are pretty much the sole reasons I became a Hokie. He played football here in the early 80s and met his wife outside of West AJ. I knew I wanted to be an aerospace engineer but wasn't sure where I wanted to go to college and she said "you should visit Tech." Needless to say the rest is history. I met the best friends that I have in my life and, the first weekend of my sophomore year, the woman who would become my wife in that town. The icing on the cake was finding out after I got there what part Virginia Tech played in building College Gameday, and the special place it has in that shows history. College football will miss him greatly. As I sit here today with my 19 month old on my lap watching Lee's last one, I know I will.
Fantastic post. College game days (as well as College Gameday) will not be the same without Corso.
Which coach did Lee Corso pick against the most with his choice of headgear?
Nike Saban, who he is sitting beside today. Also, closer to home:
We love you, Lee.
Welp he picked against us today so guess we are doomed....or is it his unlucky 13th pick?
I mean they all predicted a SC blowout. Surprised they even included it on the list
Pretty sure the above stats are only headgear picks
Welcome back to earth, Fran Brown. 'Cuse down 17-0 to the volunteers after one quarter.
Johnson and Klatt fawning all over the D-Lines for OSU/UT.
"Unbelievable" that they could reload after losing so much talent.
Yeah, I mean its almost like the system is setup just to keep the elite teams at the top.
Edit:
Also, Arch Manning has done nothing remotely impressive.
After the visit, I wish Arch would've gone to loluva. He sucks.
The way this game is going, he might have to transfer there next year.
I agree he has looked very pedestrian. However, we also have to remember he may be playing against the best defense in the country in week 1.
Arch Manning hype >>>>>> Arch Manning performance.
Maybe giving kids millions of dollars in "NIL" before they've proven themselves on the field is extremely economically short-sighted??
Manning wasn't even named to the Manning Award Preseason List
ODU with a sexy goal line stand on Indiana's opening drive
Edit: And another one
Castellanos out there with his mouth piece sticking out of his helmet like a rookie lol.
At least FSU is in this one. At least so far.
Based on the new ACC revenue sharing, I am wondering if I should even watch this game.
At least this game has some other games on in the same time slot. Being the only game on tomorrow at 3 on Labor Day weekend should be good for our ratings.
True. We need to keep it close though. SC gets too far ahead and viewership will drop.
We are gonna win it!!
I hope you are right. It would be nice to start the season that way.
FSU is trying to make the ACC look good. Is ESPN going to allow that?
All part of the plan...
ESPN gets ratings right now and FSU gets more $$ for their inevitable ACC buyout--then onto the SEC.
Its a win-win
Gus Malzahn with great playcalling so far.
I'm sure Malzahn calling a great game is really tormenting the Bama fans.
FSU vs bama 3rd Q 24-7.
You really got to be on the hot seat if you lose to a QB that VT beat. They ain't good.
FSU last year was completely demoralized.
They don't look great but bama looks lost.
And FSU looses the ball on a flubbed punt.
PI in the end zone. FSU is trying to loose.
Score still 24-10 FSU.
Bama misses Saban right now.
They look like a sandlot team.
Wish they had spent a moment on that punt. Looked like it hit the gunner's foot before rolling
There's a lot of possibility for this to be the SEC's worst opening weekend in a while.
grinchSmile.gif
Stop it, you're getting me excited.
But but but the $EC deserves 4 or 5 teams in the playoff!
If FSU and Clemson win, and VT somehow shocks the world tomorrow, wow what a statement from the ACC. FSU looks extremely good right now.
Add in the GT win over Colorado (who is probably shit, but a P4 opponent anyways), and it'd be a pretty damn good opening weekend(s) for the ACC outside of Stanford and Wake.
Of course, lolUVA scoreless with Coastal after 1......π€¦ββοΈ
Love the idea, but doubt we see any more surprises this weekend. 2 teams lose, 6 teams have already won, and the remaining 8 have extremely high chances of winning. Worst case I see is the $EC going 13-3.
Updated stats going into tonight's SC/VT Game - SEC is 13-2 on the weekend.
Hopefully we get the same new coordinator boost that FSU is getting.
Castellanos is making the Alabama D look silly, something a mobile QB always did against Saban.
And the front 4 on FSU's defense is incredibly physical and active. Very good lookin group.
FSU working on choking this one away
24-17 FSU. 11:00 left in Q4.
Balls FSU converts on 4th down 4th and a long 1 from their own 34.
Flowed by bana's second late hit on the QB in this half. They had FSU at 3rd and 10 but gave them a new set of downs.
FSU TD.
31-17. 7:17 left in Q4
Bama needs a new QB1 and their offense is trying to figure out what game they are playing.
Dumb targeting by FSu on a bama WR that had already dropped the ball.
Not targeting, he missed but he tried.
In what world would that be targeting? I get why they threw the flag, but the announcers acting like that was anything close was stupid
in the Bama wins world
WR was definately defenseless.
LB led with his helmet but missed.
I'm loving every moment of Bama finally playing a true big away game (not neutral site) and getting spanked.
Yeah, when was the last time they played a real away game against a non-cupcake?
VT?
Will be interesting to see if this is a "good" loss where FSU vaults to top 15 and Bama drops to 16, or Bama free falls out and FSU is barely top 25
FSU doesn't look great other than their Dline. They look like they could easily end up 8-4
The camera guy hung on a student and the guy majorly flipped off the camera.
LOL
OMG that was hilarious
Legend
I mean this guy just got memed or gif'ed or whatever it's called forever.
Bama looks like we could beat them.
FSU is gonna win this game easily now.
I don't see things going well for DeBoer in Tuscaloosa.
They want Saban results whether realistic or not
Something something..don't be the guy that follows the guy....
Bama 6-6 to the playoffs because F college football
I'm pretty sure that Alabama isn't a top ten team.
I'm even more sure that FSU isn't an unranked team.
And Bama goes DOWN! Love. It!
Insane how weak loluva's schedule is. I think the weakest in all of P4. Might be what keeps Tony Elliott employed.
As much as I love seeing the Alabama fans have their souls ripped out, the season is far from over. See 2014 Ohio St
Is Clemson really doing the dumbass bus entrance again??
They suck
Again? They do this for EVERY home game.
But like such a drawn out production for tv. They did it for the first time on tv before the 2013 FSU game and got rolled. I don't want to see y'all get on and off a bus!
forgot LSU has Braelin Moore and Mansoor Delane now
both listed as impact players, sigh
Need to see Delane get beat on a vert. Thats how I know it'll be VT football season.
I am here for this level of salt and loving it
Still early, but this is my nominee for comment of the year right here.
Klubnik looks like he's in mid season form already
ACC is out for blood tonight. Love it.
SEC stumbling out of the game in their marquee matchups this week, hopefully the cocks will follow suit.
UTSA only trailing by 4 to #19 ATM in the 3rd
Might be a very bad day for the SEC
Delane making plays? What is this bizarro world??
I thought he could only be picked on during season openers
What happens when you have a real DC who knows how to use him...and a position coach who doesn't cares more about chicken wings than his job.
Well also, at LSU he doesn't have to cover for lesser players around him.
This right here, he was playing CB and Safety at the sane time.
Herbie and Fowler justifiably excited about the acquisition their employer funded.
Tables appear to be turning on the fighting Dabos
Edit: nevermind...saved by an awful replay call.
K State at risk of losing to North Dakota to start 0-2.
Escaped with TD with 42 seconds left to win 38-35. North Dakota QB just couldn't do it in those last moments to get them downfield. Went 2-6 in final drive.
Clemson's D looks cooked.
Did Kelly just bonehead the turnover on downs away....here's hoping
Welp Delane saved his ass
Oh blah blah Delane. Yeah makes a difference when ESPN hypes him up. Guy got torched last year.
This Delane is quite different from the Delane we saw at Duke.
Wow Clemson D just laying down now
ACC officiating just gave LSU essentially a timeout fixing the clock
Wow LSU Gunner blew that big time. 18 yard swing for Clemson
Wheels coming off the Dabo Bus
Nevermind it didn't, announcers were wrong on where they said drive would start
Ten yards from the spot of the foul right? Otherwise why wouldn't you hold every return. So what if you run it back and start your drive with 1st and goal lol
Yeah it was actually 10 yards from where it was received but announcers had said they would start at 36 yard line which just didn't make sense.
The return of Clemsoning
im pretty sure that happened 2 years ago when they started Klubnik, he's not good. They would have won so many more games if they had a better QB.
I think his OL made him look worse. He was running for his life the entire game.
But thats their offense amd has been since Chad Morris left. I dont think Trevor ever made a clutch throw, he picked up big downs with his feet running away from the defenders
Watching fsu and Miami move the ball with relative ease makes me so angry. Why can't we have nice things?
Because they both sunk our entire NIL budget into just their OL's.
Miami went and got the best QB they could in the portal each of the last two years. Spent big on OL recruiting as well.
FSU went and got a running QB and paid Gus Malzahn $6M/3yr to be their OC.
Yeah, exactly. Makes me angry. Why can't we have nice things? The tables are unfairly slanted and we're losers
They have to deal with being Miami though, so we've got that going for us
I was kind of pulling for Miami (blech) over Notre Dame, but it's just so satisfying watching them fall apart in the 4th quarter
Da U back?
Please no. Two decades of futility has been fun to watch. Schadenfreude confirmed.
Giraffe certainly thins so. But she was the first one to trumpet this ever my single season.
Sorry. Can't seem to embed her video on ESPN saying Da U can win the ACC!!!
Given ESPNs coverage of UNCheat, you'd think there was only one team playing tonight
There is... people about to get a lesson about the value of the coach versus the player in college football...
Sure about that???
Leg for fawlty towers reference
And the player matters plenty... TCU pays more for better players than UNC, and the best coach of all time was helpless.
The lesson here, evidently, is that the player is much more valuable than the coach
I guess that harkens back to the ol' saying - It's not the Xs and Os, it's the Jimmys and Joes
The truth is you need talent to win. Simply having talent isn't enough for championships, though. The championship teams have talent AND good coaching. Talent is going to trump poor coaching most days. A really good coach might be able to out-coach a more talented team once in a while but more often than not, the talent is going to win out. It's always been that way and always will be that way.
Good coaching raises your floor. Good talent raises your ceiling. If you want to win more, get more talent. Simple as that.
I hope the VT BoV was paying attention.
You can have the best coach of all time, but if you aren't willing to up the budget to get better talent, it won't fucking matter.
These days, you need both.
Then again, you always did. The tools are a little different now.
"You guys keep talking about a 20 million dollar roster. If you don't pay the right guys, you'll be shit out of luck."
- Nick Saban
I don't think its necessarily one or the other.
Plus, I think when we're talking about "great coaches" we need to do a deeper dive into the entire Staff.
2 Lombardi's - including the GM that brought "70 new players" (most of whom look like they belong in FCS) and 3 Belichicks.
When you construct a Staff on nepotism, you're not exactly maximizing your potential.
A bad coach can win with great players, but a great coach cannot win with bad players.
You give Dabo the budget to go big dick swinging on the recruiting trail and he wins a couple Nattys and runs the world in the ACC for 15 years. You give one of the all time greatest coaches in the game UNCs roster, and they get ass blasted by an unranked team at home on national tv.
If ever there was a moment where our own BoV and AD should know exactly where we should invest our money, it should have been watching UNC get trashed.
Exactly.
"Exhibit A"
But it's never that binary. Kirk Ferentz, Kyle Wittingham, Jaime Chadwell (at costal carolina), all had multiple good seasons with unheralded players.
I do think that coaching NFL and College Football require a different skillset. I don't think Andy Reid, Peak Bill Parcels, or half these NFL greats could come in a win at the college game. There are three guys ever(?) to do it at both levels: Pete Carroll, Jimmy Johnson, and... Jim Harbaugh?
Bit of an oversimplification IMO. Sonny Dikes isn't a bad coach by any stretch. Remember in the 2023(?) season when they executed a full change of personnel and kicked a field goal in 12 seconds without using any TOs, and had a couple seconds to spare? That's attention to detail/great game day coaching.
There was also Steve Spurrier, but his bigger problem was that he had to work with Dan Snyder, so I'm not sure it was a fair test of the college-to-NFL theory.
Nick Saban also might have worked out if the dolphins didn't flub the drew Brees situation and Chip Kelly the GM got Chip Kelly the coach fired
But managing a stupid owner (Spurrier) or working with a GM (Saban) part of the NFL job. Just like Bill Belichek mismanaging recruiting visits.
The behind-the-scenes/back office parts of NFL vs College are so different. It's not just X's and O's.
I think you need to have both. I fully believe that a great coach can elevate mediocre talent. I also believe that supreme talent can mask poor coaching (I think this was the case for our offense from about 2008 through 2011). That said, if I had to choose between which I could have, Talent vs Great Coach, I'll take the talent this day in age. We need some wins and talent gets you some wins. Right now, we have mid coaches and mid talent. That's why we're a mid team that wins 5 or 6 games every year for the last decade.
It's a good thing we don't play them this year.
And that coverage might get UNC $15m more per year from the ACC without actually being a even remotely good
I don't think I've ever seen that stadium that full. Belichick effect.
Not with that much blue anyway. I think I've seen it full of maroon before
In about a month it won't be!
TCU just ran like a :50 sec offense and drove the field before half to tack on another 3.
Even though TCU gets the ball to start the second half. What a novelty!
A coach that can be aggressive and an accurate QB, what a crazy concept. Maybe we will get those one year.
After 2.5 Quarters, UNC is a basketball school once again...
Thanks for playing....enjoy Jordon
Edit:
Omg--this has gone from comical to full-on Dumpster Fire
UNC going ask for a running clock in the 4th at this rate
Lopez hurt in 3rd quarter, stadium starting to empty. Not a great start.
Not watching the game but UNC appwara yo not stop anything based on TCUs stats, is there any coaching going on at Chapel Hill? The RB is averaging 11 ypc.
There are a few interspersed shots of Belichick walking the sidelines scowling and shouting things into the headset, but it looks mostly ineffectual.
It looks really really bad. This team looks listless and disorganized.
The nearest I can describe it to is FSU under Taggart.
Herbstreit, naturally, has a Rolodex of excuses perpared.
And his son is the DC.....
Man, that D is .... Bad...
His son is HCiW per his contract.
OK, that is semantics. He was the DC last night, and that D stunk.
Tarholes hitting every branch on the ugly tree.
41-7 and not even the 4th yet.
Lopez getting hurt might be the best thing that happens to the tarholes this year. Johnson can sling it but can't run. Can the OL protect him against a team that isn't nursing a 30 point lead?
Belichick cemented himself as the greatest coach of all time tonight.
Belichick's girlfriend must have given up & left. I haven't seen a shot of her since the 1st Qtr.
Stadium's empty.
UNC's back, ya'll
WOOOOO heh heh heh heh get your shit rocked, Belicheat!
Bill's facial expression throughout the first half reminded me of Mac Brown fumbling with his headset vs VT during enter sandman. Each time they showed him on TV I would chuckle at the memory of Ole Man Mack's disheveled look on his face. And, the results were roughly the same for UNC. A trend is emerging.
Plus, that may have been the all time best Enter Sandman fan performance too!

Do we know if he still can coach? I did not see any of the game or hear interviews with Coach B. Not asking as a challenge or disagreement, but as an honest question of do we think he can still coach? He's made some, how shall I phrase this, 'questionable' decisions recently. Having seen my own mom go downhill and my own mother-in-law before they each passed away, some people are just not all there at his age.
If he has lost a lot of his mental capabilities (which, again, I don't know) then I really do feel sorry for him and his family. Seems like the gold digger is just taking advantage of someone that used to be great and stealing what should be his career legacy and maybe financial legacy that should go to his family or maybe causes he would believe in donating to. I hope people don't celebrate if he is going mentally downhill. Would we want our father or grandfather to go through this?
