The Virginia Tech football team will open the 2031 season against Wisconsin in the Duke's Mayo Classic at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 30, 2031, the university announced Wednesday. The Hokies and Badgers were originally scheduled to face off at Lane Stadium on September 12, 2031, but will now kick off on college football's opening weekend.
"In today's ever-changing landscape of college football, opportunities like the Duke's Mayo Classic allow us to maximize exposure, drive viewership and generate revenue that directly supports our student-athletes," said Virginia Tech Director of Athletics Whit Babcock. "Playing in Charlotte positions Virginia Tech to take advantage of the evolving environment of the sport while showcasing our program on a national stage."
The originally scheduled Lane Stadium contest will be replaced by an additional home game later in the season.
While the game has been relocated, the arrangement remains advantageous for Virginia Tech. This schedule change allows the Hokies to keep six home games and schedule marquee matchups, while adding an attractive opening weekend to maximize viewership and visibility.
Tech is scheduled to play Wisconsin in Madison in 2032. The Hokies and Badgers have never met on the gridiron.

Wasn't this game originally scheduled to be played under Bill Dooley?
edit: This game was originally scheduled in 2006 to be played in 2008/2009
i remember this game being scheduled at least as early as in 04
A home and home to a neutral and home is so dumb
Let's hope the product we put on the field is makes us want to show ourselves on a national stage.
"Playing in Charlotte positions Virginia Tech to take advantage of the evolving environment of the sport while showcasing our program on a national stage."
So we got screwed in the arrangement by moving this to Charlotte and foregoing all concession, ticket, and parking sales?
This seems like we got bent over to make it happen
Hopefully there is a payout to playing in Charlotte that come close to the profit we would make after a big home game. The town of Blacksburg and the students that can't afford the travel and accommodations are getting screwed here. We can still schedule another home game now. but probably not going to be the draw that Wisky would be.
It's got to be a TV thing, right? Being in a nationally televised (for sure) game against a big opponent gives us a guaranteed TV audience that will boost our ratings for revenue sharing purposes. Can't imagine that Wisconsin said that either it was in Charlotte or they were pulling out. It'll still be effectively a home crowd for Tech presumably.
If TV wants a big audience they would've pushed to keep it in Blacksburg
Oh, I assumed the opposite. Dukes Mayo sent us a fat check to agree to host it there instead of at our house.
If my memory serves me, this series with Wisconsin has been a roller coaster... if every part of the roller coaster wasn't fun.
I'm OK with it if it helps to ensure the game actually happens.
The timing is optimal if VT manages to get a good coach.
Not pleased that a home and home went to a neutral site and their home. I am fine with changing this to a neutral site and canceling their home game.
The southern end got moved to charlotte, they should move the north end to green bay (edit: i'm aware there is currently no CFB showcase there)
(edit: i'm aware there is currently no CFB showcase there....yet.....)
That would be fair. Heck, I would even buy tickets to go see a game at Lambeau.
Unless it moves to Chicago, I would like us to keep the game in Madison. It's fairly easy to get up there, and I've only been back once since I moved away a couple years ago.
Also, every single Hokie who makes the trip will be extremely smitten by Madison in September. And there are a lot of Hokies who live in town.
Wack
comma out of.
Why would Wisconsin not want to play in Lane stadium anymore? Haven't they seen that winning in Lane is almost guaranteed for visitors these days?
So, that means we'll have a football team by then!
Sus
Like this game will happen
In other news Florida today cancelled home and homes with Cal, NC State and Arizona State so guess this news is slightly better than that
SEC schools are preparing for their 9 game conference schedule. Naturally, they're cancelling their non-con P4 games and keeping their SoCon & similar games
Can't cut out the cupcakes.
Does this mean we're not getting an invite to B1G?
