Alright we're out of the "preseason" and entering into conference play against NC State.
Given the state of the program and the expected loss of talent into the transfer portal in the next few weeks, what do you think are realistic expectations for the rest of the season?
My hope is we can finish the season 6-6 with a win against UVa but given the schedule, that seems unlikely.
Want to use this as a way of measuring how Monty navigates the rest of the season

With the way we have looked the first 4 games of this season, if we win another game this year I'll be surprised. Our offense struggled to get any push at the line against Wofford, that alone should temper any expectations the rest of the way.
NC State isnt good, Cal just got demolished, and wakes not good. Also UVA. So my preseason prediction of 4-8 is still holding but I cant see us getting more than 4 wins and I wouldnt be surprised with no more wins.
Any further victories will surprise me. My expectation is 2-10 and I don't think the additional win comes against loluva. I am an eternal optimist, but this team is deeply broken and any further success will be due to encountering an equally broken opponent.
Hate saying it but only maybes I see as potentially close games are Cal and UVA and not even sure either of those will be close either. Both are 3-1 now. Cal beat Oregon State and Minnesota soundly but then laid an egg yesterday in a 34-0 drubbing by SDSU.
UVA could still be frauds but they kept it close against NC State and blew out their other three opponents. Their QB is not a world beater but he is consistent. Blowing out Stanford this weekend doesn't tell me much because other than Stanford surprising me by beating Boston College they have been about as bad as I expected. I think Stanford, BC and the Hokies will be vying for bottom 3 in ACC this season.
Not idea if "talent" leaving will hurt or hep us. Might put kids in that want to play which could help.
Four ACC teams with one win at the moment are BC, Stanford, Virginia Tech and Clemson. Only ACC teams I am pretty sure we could beat are two we don't play. BC and UNC.
The ACC really is a dumpster fire. There are 6 teams that have not managed to score 100 points yet. Wake gets a pass as they have only played 3 games so far. The others all have 4 games so are averaging less than 25 ppg and most played subpar opponents. The Hokies are only one with two P2/P4 opponents.
NC State beat both Wake and UVA but lost to Duke who lost to Tulane who just got wrecked this weekend. So there's a lot of bottom feeders in the ACC.
Given where we are at this point in the season, I think .500 in conference would be a tremendous success. I can't really see us winning more than 4 of the next 8.
If we can't be good, I at least want us to be a thorn in someone side. Let's be the team that ruins GT's/FSU/Miami's undefeated season. And let's beat UVA.
I think Monty gets us a win or two that we wouldn't otherwise get.
2 or 3 more wins this season would be a tremendous success at this point. Although having an interim coach for 3/4 of a season i suppose if Monty is a good coach he might be able to pull out one or 2 more wins. I know there were several players not playing yesterday. Id be surprised to see a mid season mass exodus but I have been wrong once or twice before.
Being practical, my hope is 3-9. Best guess is we go 2-10. If we can get to 4 wins, I'll be very surprised.
What I really want to see is a team that is not lazy and weak. They can lose, but at least show a little fire.
Can we just get a team that is disciplined, especially the blockers on the punt return? We had 8 penalties for 74 yards yesterday. ODU was 12 for 113 yards. The first two games were relatively clean with 3 and 4 penalties in each. Let's do that. We have a hard enough time moving the ball so putting ourselves in a hole is a recipe for disaster.
Well in the Vandy game specifically, it's hard to have penalties when they keep getting declined.
True there were like 3 or 4 that got declined, forgot about that. Just really tired of the undisciplined play especially from guys that have ONE job and regularly fail to do it right
This lack of discipline has been a recurring issue with VT. I mean for years and years it seems. Would be wonderful to get that straightened out.
I don't see another win on the schedule unfortunately. And when we get to thanksgiving weekend, we may loose by 30+ with the way UVA can toss it around (our secondary is absolute garbage).
Here's what we need to do as fans... We need to support and sell our program. Let's go to the games (I should be at two more)! Let's turn the TV on! Lets show our future AD, our future coaching staff, and our future conference that VT really does have the best fans in all of college football.
I'll be there for all the remaining home games; don't know if that makes me a masochist or a delusional fan....
Side note- I can't blame folks who left in the second half (though it was still a larger crowd during the 4th quarter than the ODU game)- but damn it was hot as Hades in the east stands. Legitimately was concerned about heat exhaustion and had to hit the restroom and concourse for 10-15 minutes at end of halftime and beginning of 3rd quarter. Have never had that happen before there. It was 85 in the shade but way warmer in the sunshine obviously and relatively zero breeze for much of the game.
I don't know. I think leaving fans show up no matter how it has looked on the field has led to complacency in the Athletic Dept. Why make changes when it's still working? I think the university might need to be scared straight. Empty seats, cratering donations and revenue, the back against the wall feeling that that makes them things things need to improve by a large measure and like yesterday.
4 Conference wins.
I actually think we can steal the NC State game. We always save something for conference play going back to Beamer and treating non con as "Exhibitions." We will be overlooked. They are not as good as their record indicates. If we can play with any sort of passion I could see a W.
After that, no everyone will be wary. WF, Cal, UVa are the most likely Ws to round out the year.
Not a chance we steal the game in Raleigh next week. Mobile QB who can throw it around to a couple good WRs. Recipe for disaster with this defense always lost in zone coverage.
Unfortunately agree
Good is generous to call their WRs
Anderson and Grimes are legit deep threats on any play. Both are averaging over 18 yards per catch. Beyond them it's hit or miss.
A big goose egg in the W column
I also predict a lot more Saturday yard work for myself, along with more fire pit and bourbon.
Zero.
I say we lose out and get the number 1 pick.
yeah, I don't expect another win. Maybe Cal? But even that's iffy
10-3.
I think we win a total of 3. So two more dubs, but would love to see more.
I can't confidently predict any more wins - we beat Wofford by more than I expected (just based on the score line - I didn't watch, spent the day at the beach with my family instead) but Wofford should be the worst team on our schedule. Don't forget that we got absolutely pantsed at home by ODU (ostensibly the second worst team on our schedule)
The ACC is a big steaming pile of poop. There will probably be a win or two that we don't deserve against a team that finds a way to deserve it even less. I think we might win 1 or 2 more by sheer luck.
I would be completely unshocked by anything from 1-11 to 3-9. Any more than 3 wins would surprise me
ODU kept it within two TDs with Indiana, I would say based on this past weekend they might win the ACC if they played in the conference.
"ostensibly"
My expectations for in-conference play:
After listening to the announcer at the start of the Wofford game talk about the path for us to make the Playoffs, I am all in - ACC Championship baby! We going 0-8!!!
