Men's Basketball to Play in 2025 Battle for Atlantis

Will be in it with Auburn, Ohio State, Saint Mary's, and VCU, with three teams TBD. Pretty good field depending on how they round it out.

Thanksgiving in the Bahamas? Hmmmm

I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them!

We will play really well early in the season, look like dog $h1t for most of the ACC, then make a little run to end the season. We've seen this movie before...

Is coronavirus over yet?

I might really have to look into this.

Looks like the field for this tournament changed a good bit since it was originally announced. Bracket

Not as many big brands, but still some solid early season matchups. Pre-season KenPom rankings just came out so here's how the field stacks up.

  • Hokies (71)
  • CSU (79)
  • St. Mary's (55)
  • Wichita State (128)
  • Western Kentucky (202)
  • Vanderbilt (19)
  • VCU (60)
  • USF (104)

Is it bad that I hope St. Mary's comes out with at least 2 losses so we don't have to hear about them come Feb/Mar.

I wouldn't mind one of those losses being us. I'm assuming the incestuous rankings will favor the SEC as usual and as an ACC team, we'll only end up with ~4 chances for Q1 wins in conference games. So it would be nice to make some of these count.

Preseason read on the ACC is mixed. Seems like Duke and Lewisville are the top teams, then a whole lot of unknown. I've seen Hokies slotted anywhere from 6th 16th.

VCU at 60 surprises me with coaching change and basically an entire new starting five plus bench from the portal and most from lower level basketball. They only have one guy that averaged double digit scoring last season and only two others that were above 8 ppg. Ward from LSU seems legit, Tracey was a bench guy at Oregon last year, Mitchell from Bryant has a load of question marks as does Evans from Bryant. The new head coach, Martelli, was the Bryant head coach last year so Mitchell and Evans at least know his system.

Lofty aspirations for Vanderbilt at 19. One former Hokie we won't potentially face is MJ Collins who transferred to Utah State after one year at Vandy.

Vandy did another thorough Portal overhaul. Frankie Collins, SG on his fourth school after stops at Michigan, Arizona State and TCU but likely starts at PG. Tyler Harris, PF on his third school after prior stops at Portland and Washington. Mike James, Wing comes over after two years at Louisville. George Kimble averaged 18 ppg at Eastern Kentucky last year as a SG. Devin McGlockton, SF, returns but Hokies saw him for a couple years at BC before last year at Vandy. Mason Nicholson, PF transferred in after 3 years at Jacksonville State. AK Okereke, SF comes in after 3 years at Cornell. Jalen Washington, Center, spent 3 years at UNC before coming over.

Tyler Nickel is one of only three returners from last season.

Vanderbilt has 7 guys that averaged double-digit scoring last year, plus three more that averaged 7.5 ppg or higher. The biggest question is how they gel all these new pieces and keep all the scorers happy with reduced roles in that regard. The freshmen that signed were all 3 🌟 so likely don't see the floor much.

It is a crazy world where this isn't going to be unusual as players transfer here and there in search of more money/playing time.
