SEC suspends a Referee for Performance

The SEC has apparently suspended referee Ken Williamson for the season after the league received 11 challenges to calls made in the Auburn - Georgia game. Nine of the eleven were validated that the officials made the incorrect call.

This is the first time in years that I can recall a referee getting a suspension like this for performance. I hope this is a step to actual accountability across football.

Below is a play that went to review and ended up not being ruled a TD for Auburn when review clearly showed Auburn player in the end zone by a yard or more

This would never fly in the ACC who would ref the games if they demanded quality refereeing

the UNC one took me out lol - bravo

Onward and upward

Everyone of the players were in the end zone? How the hell could that not be a touchdown?

This is going to be great for the ACC.

SEC needed Georgia to win that game. Just like ACC needed Miami to beat us last year.

Looks like Ken Williamson is just the fall guy.

One ref should not have been suspended, it should have been the whole crew and the review booth based on that video.

Justified. The way that game was called was absurd.

The Kirby Smart "clapping" was probably the least influential screw up but it was absolute confirmation that the crew just had no handle on that game at all.

Yeah the clap on clap off timeout

Suspended? For how long?

Given the state of sports, one wonders if maybe he's reliable, but to his side (sports gambling) boss.

Articles vary on this. Some said for the season, others said permanently.

With the rise in gambling and the ease to get involved in a game-fixing scam, this needs to become common practice. While I do think some leeway needs to be expected for refereeing, as their is an inherent level of error that comes along with the difficulty of refereeing, the ability to disguise bad refereeing is too easy. And harsh penalties should become the norm for patterned behavior.

It would be a good idea to have a federal sports gambling commission to help keep the games clean. This commission should be paid for by MGM, FanDuel, etc., should consist of FBI-like training (specific to gambling), and endorsed by every major professional and collegiate sport.

What you are asking for is common sense, and as such is the prevailing momentum all common sense will be ignored or at best not implemented.

See the recent arrests by the FBI involving the NBA. Seems the FBI is making it a heavy focus.

I would assume those in the know are aware of such things, and could be ONE of the reasons to distance themselves from this ref in this case. If they weren't, they are now. Too many eyeballs on big time games to be doing dumb stuff. (Look at the other thread with audience numbers...Duke football MAY be able to get away with a smidge, but $EC football cannot withstand the blips. In a Duke game, it's a one-off. In an $EC game, they may lose that audience and/or betting money in the future. I'm guessing there's a LOT more $$$$ laid down on a Georgia game across the country than a Duke or other low level viewership team.)

For sure. And part of my thought process. It's hard to watch a game in any sport anymore and have the thought of sportsbook gambling fixing in the head.

ACC ought to suspend their entire officiating department

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

There shouldn't be conference officials. There should just be NCAA officials. That organization has to be good for something at this point right?

I do art stuff.

This is where throw our heads back and laugh

That organization has to be good for something at this point right?

if so, it hasn't been identified yet.

was I right or was I right?

We need to get these acc refs suspended. That roughing was attrocious

The whole crew for allowing it.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Should have been picked up after conference

Not to mention they have missed egregious targeting against our players the last couple of weeks but called it against us tonight twice on horrible calls that were overturned. I think the field would have pelted with crap if they hadn't overturned the second one.

What should have happened:
Bogus roughing the passer call; refs huddle then announce 'there was no flag on the play, 4th down.'

But it didn't happen, so either:
1. Refs screwed up majorly. (OK, it happens, BUT there should be disciplinary action over such a screw up that very likely would affect the outcome. You could see Coach Monty say to the ref 'you just gave them the game!.')
2. Intentional: ( hate to say it, but with the recent NBA gambling stink ya gotta start wondering. There were no conference implications from the outcome of cal/VT. So the only potential benefit would be betting $)

I know, and I dont think it was the case, but either way, it's gotta be looked at hard if only for the appearance of concern by the league.

I made the joke those suspended SEC refs apparently already got jobs with the ACC. They are obviously still following orders.

Watching Sportscenter right now. They were showing the highlights of the Oklahoma Defensive End basically murdering different QBs and none of them were roughing and ALL of them were worse than our Roughing calls last night.

I am shocked that sportcenter last night and gameday today didnt have any highlights from pur game but both had tons of hoghlights from the north texas game. I havent watched non-game espn in a while.but did to see how they talked about the rtp and they didnt even show the game at all.
