Maddy says not to worry about VT Defense

Luther Maddy got the hokie nation all pumped up about the hokies defense for next season. He seems to be confident that the defense will be alright despite all the seniors graduating.

As bad as ESPN is, it was a nice interview with Maddy.

It was a pretty good interview once I cringed at the wording of that first question.

Its a Heather Dinich article. Of course she sounds surprised Maddy says we'll be fine. She's a clueless twat.

I think clueless is as far as you need to go when describing her.

Look, it's America. You can say whatever you want. This, however, is a HOKIES website...
Do you want people coming on TKP and thinking that this is the way Hokies talk? There are kids that come on this website. Heck, recruits check this website out.
The high quality of banter, in depth analysis and the general respect that are modeled on TKP showcases what Hokies are about. We don't need middle school language and personal attacks - That makes this a place that high quality people won't want to visit.

Anyone who downvoted this seriously needs to spend the 24 hours of their life watching Chappelle's Show. Probably the greatest sketch comedy show ever (other than SNL of course).

I think the down votes are for the "clueless twat" description before the Chappelle's Show meme. I declined to up vote for that reason and while I didn't think it quite reached the level of offensiveness to deserve a down vote (though only just missing it), I can easily see someone viewing it as a "hateful comment related to gender"

I agree. I dv'd for that reason. The chappelle show meme is great, but that language doesn't belong on this site

Seriously? Then we should stop using any form of any word that can be offensive to women. This includes "bitch" in any case. Also lets stop using the word "dick" to describe anyone or anything. Also curse words don't belong here because they're vulgar and and in poor taste.

It's a sports website people, don't show any passion or humor please.

Disclaimer: I haven't up- or downvoted the original post. I'm indifferent to it and here's why.

Lots of people post stuff from ESPN here, mostly to complain about it or take shots at Dinich. I don't really care for her stuff, because I personally feel its quality is below what we get from other sources, especially Andy. Calling someone a "clueless twat" is a personal attack that does not represent the level of respect that should be shown in this community and in Hokie Nation as a whole. I agree that we shouldn't be calling people "dicks," either, for the same reason. You want to critique someone's professional career? Then keep it at least somewhat classy and provide a critique. Our community guidelines demand respect among each other, and I think that should be part of our general practice, as well.

Extrapolating to the general use of profanity is just a straw man.

"Exit light..."

Personally, I didn't mean any gender specific by it, I just think that it accurately encompasses the way in which I feel about her writing. I didn't feel that 'clueless jackass' or 'clueless dumbass' fully encompassed the levels at which she sucks as a writer.

Every year its the same thing with her. She covers the ACC, but writes in a manner that shows she doesn't care to do so. Every single article about every team is rittled with backhanded compliments and unnecessary pop shots. Even when FSU was on their title run last year, she couldn't help it but to express an attitude of 'I'm waiting for them to fail, woe is me for covering this league'. I grew tired of her constantly crapping all over the conference back when we were rolling when she could never, EVER give us positive press because of whatever agenda she was trying to push.

Andrea Aderson... She's great. She's an objective blogger who puts out good pieces. Dinich is not. I truly and honestly feel that Dinich is one of the main reasons why the ACC is crapped on as much as they are on ESPN, even when one of our schools is winning it all.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Really!? Because I think reading or watching a blog from Neck or Andrea is wayyy more offensive than the clueless twat reference. I think that reference is spot on. In fact, I equate reading or watching anything from HD and Andrea to watching "2 girls + 1 cup" (and not in the good way). That's just my 2 cents.

You want the community to show respect towards one another and to everything else in the universe. Profanity in many of the circles that calling someone a "twat" in analogue to "dumbass" would also find using most profanity in the same light. Not to mention you would never use the word "fuck", "asshole", "shit", or many other profane words in an atmosphere where respect is expected such as in a business meeting.

It just seems to me that the PC crowd around here looks for a reason to get offended at times. He's not viciously attacking women in general he's merely referring to her writing style. Which is at times uninformed, doesn't look at most of the details, and can't be bothered to put much time in research besides looking at class on a roster and their stats archive.

Then again individual words don't bother me at all. I couldn't care less which word you spewed at me. The context is where everything is derived. The word "mule" can be just as offensive as offensive.

You want the community to show respect towards one another and to everything else in the universe.

You're making a lot of assumptions about me, but yes, I firmly believe people deserve respect unless they have personally wronged me or done something so demonstrably awful to no longer deserve that respect. Off-topic, though.

I'm also not trying to equate TKP with a business meeting, nor should anyone else here. Again, off-topic.

I'm not in the full-on PC crowd, either, just trying to discuss what's expected of members here. I would absolutely dispute your notion that "he's merely referring to her writing style." In what way does "she's a clueless twat" critique her writing? If it's a matter of "her writing makes her seem clueless regarding the in-depth issues of the ACC," then I agree with you. The assessments above (yours and VTAlum's) are much more in-depth, on-topic, and I agree with much of what is said there.

"Exit light..."

It just seems to me that the PC crowd around here looks for a reason to get offended at times.

Bingo! When I see people starting to get sand in their private areas over a comment with some potty mouth language or something they feel is "offensive", I just take the emotion out of it and let it work it self out. PC; raising a generation pus...weak people.

Yeah, seen this argument many times. generation of weaklings. don't get me wrong, I completely agree with you.

But in my day, if I called some lady a "clueless twat" my dad would have knocked the shit out of me. Why? because it's called respect. In fact, I don't give a shit about the PC argument. I'm all for a strong willed generation but you didn't go insulting someone with language like that and not get the smacked, punched.. whatever. you got taught some manners.

just because this is the internet doesn't mean it should be said. And just because you personally feel the PC crowd is overly offensive still doesn't mean it should be said.

For the record, I didn't downvote or upvote. But I would suggest to anyone looking to insult HD or anyone else to find some clever way to do it and not be so obvious.

Agreed. There's a difference between being PC p!ssies and being respectful.

Heck with my dad beating that crap out of me if I used language like that. Mom would have broken the sorority paddle over my butt.

Best part of the article:

HD:Is there anything you want Virginia Tech fans to know about the defense that I didnt ask you?

LM: I want to let them know dont be worried. Were going to meet all of their expectations and be a great defense just like we have been for the past 20 years.

I will never be worried about the VT Defense with Bud Foster at the helm.

I dont get why people take shots at Heather Dinich or Andrea. I think shes doing a decent job covering the ACC during the Off and regular season. Shes entitled to conduct interview and give her opinions. Whatever she has to say doesnt make or break Virginia tech as a program. I see it only as entertainment purposes.

Allen Ox

They drive the opinion of the ACC as a whole based on the articles they write. For most throughout the country, the only parts of the ACC football seasons they know about are what is written by Heather and Andrea. When you have one of those writers constantly giving out backhanded compliments, constantly taking unnecessary and undeserved pop shots at every school, and writing with a tone of 'covering this conference is beneath me' it sets a VERY negative tone about the conference for the rest of the nation, and it drives the national perception. No, what HD writes will not make or break VT, but over time, it DRASTICALLY influences those who ARE in the position to get us in that playoff one day, and that worries me. It worries me a lot.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I think you may be drastically overestimating the influence of the ESPN ACC Blog. Yes, ESPN, the television network, has a huge impact on the national perception of the ACC (can you say "Wheel of Destiny"). The ESPN ACC Blog, not so much. Most people who read the ESPN college football blogs tend to stick to their own conference, with a few exceptions. Due to the ACC's recent history (prior to the last year or so) of crapping the bed in big games, bowl game record, and record against SEC rivals, coupled with the narrative that the ESPN network pushes about the ACC, there are very few college football fans that are going to form their opinion of our conference based on what they read on the ACC Blog.

I used to read the blog for a few years, but mostly just to be entertained by the ACCylum of the commenting section. Fans of every team would pitch hissy fits whenever Heather Dinich wrote about them. Fans of every team claimed that HD hated them and played favorites. I am neither an HD hater or fan. HD just has a distinct, snarky writing style that rubs a lot of people the wrong way. She is frequently let down by ESPN's Stats and Information Department which makes her look uninformed. I also get the sense that ESPN does not put a ton of effort, if any, into editing what goes onto the blogs as grammatical and spelling errors are common. This may also be due to the rush to get something, anything, up on the blog. I also use to see many comments like, "HD is the worst" due to an inaccuracy or poor logic in an article that was actually written by Andrea Adelson.

Here is the main point to take away from all of this. HD and the other bloggers are paid to generate clicks and page visits, not win Pulitzer Prizes. Angering up the blood of fans of ACC teams just gets her more page visits.

So, with all of that in mind, why on earth would you visit, or care about, a less than significant portion of the ESPN website that offers you nothing but sub-par quality, links to days old information, and higher blood pressure?

Gotcha, and I agree to a point, but if you're on ESPN and you're reading something about the ACC in football, you're going to be reading an article that originated by Heather or Andrea in the blog section, that just happens to get front page news. And I agree that ESPN on TV has had a bigger impact, that Wheel of Destiny being a complete slap in the face to every team in the conference (I find it very interesting that they felt they needed the WoD when historically its really only been 2-3 teams in each division thats represented (Clemson, FSU, and BC in the Atlantic, VT & GT in the Coastal... many other conferences are far more chaotic... but I digress)). But print-wise, HD has the same impact, albeit on a smaller scale. They just compliment each other, and together it reinforces the belief that the ACC is a terrible football conference, when in reality, its had some of the crazier seasons throughout the BCS reign.

By the way, the ACCylum still exists... we just moved on to other areas based on the Facebookination of the comment sections.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

What I think is being overlooked, is when TV announcers go to do their homework on our team, they are going to read what the ACC bloggers are saying about our team and possibly regurgitate it on National TV. Some conclusion that Heather makes on her Blog can very easily bleed its way into the TV broadcast and have a huge impact. This can happen even easier when we get people who don't call ACC games regularly....aka Thursday nights.

From your original comment,

"No, what HD writes will not make or break VT, but over time, it DRASTICALLY influences those who ARE in the position to get us in that playoff one day, and that worries me. It worries me a lot."

Your typical, casual fan will get their ACC information from articles originated on the ESPN ACC blog. These people have no influence on the playoff selection committee. ESPN's overarching agenda most certainly will, but if a selection committee member starts quoting HD or AA they will get laughed out of the room.

As for the Wheel of Destiny being a slap in the face, it was created because the ACC had some of the crazier seasons during the BCS era as you specifically stated. I do not see it as a slap in the face because it was not created as a statement of the quality of the league compared to other leagues, but as a gimmick illustrating the parity and insanity within the ACC at the time. Just because it is intended to be funny, doesn't necessarily mean that it is intended to be degrading. I think it is funny because, quite often, you never know what to expect in ACC conference play.

In all honesty, the ACC somewhat deserved its national reputation as not being that good compared to other BCS conferences (except the Big East) because ACC teams consistently lost the big OOC games, sometimes in embarrassing fashion (looking at you Clemson and Georgia Tech). With the recent BCS bowl success, the ACC is only now starting to turn that impression around, but it will take time. As members of the ACC, we need to be realistic about the state of our conference, but not homeristic about it. The last thing we want to become is ACC fans instead of Virginia Tech fans. Leave that crap to the SEC.

"Nope, launch him into the sun and fart on him on the way up"

Actually for people outside the conference it plays a decent amount into what they know. Lots of casual fans barely follow their team let alone their conference in any depth. When people think of sports they think of ESPN, who just so happens to have easy access blogs for the big conferences. Last year the only reason one of my coworkers knew we had one of the best defenses was from the ACC blog where they wrote about that last October(?)

Hell I'm guilty of it. I don't follow the Big 12/10 or the B1G/12 very much and a decent chunk of my knowledge about them comes from the blogs after I get infuriated over the ACC one. Which makes me even more infuriated because the other bloggers are much better.

Yeah HokieBlitz, I had lunch with her and some other people the other day. She seems pretty personable
