You can really see what this team is capable of in stretches of the game. And even when things don't look great, they don't look awful. I think CMY might have a really good season ahead of him. I do think there will be some bumps in the road, but it is classic Mike Young to get his squad ready for March.

3. Erick Green, Jan 24, 2013 35
Erick Green, Mar 10, 2013 35

I was at that game. Cassell was really rockin' and the final point totals were impressive for both teams.
Edit: The game was in Feb '88, and the final score was 141-133. Still a record for Cassell and maybe all time for VT as well. I had to look it up for the final score, but will never forget Bimbo's 51 and I believe it was one of the highest point total for any college team. My memory says the second highest, at that time of course, but my memory is to be taken with a grain of salt or a trip to google. Anyway, I couldn't speak for a day and was hoarse for two or three days.

I was there too! Bimbo had 36 in regulation and 15 in the two OTs. (He was NOT player of the game cause they picked that at the end of regulation and Wally Lancaster had 39 points then). Both teams shot (contested) threes from near the logos near the mid-court all game. We were down 62-48 at the half and I remember turning to my friend and saying 'hey we can come back'(Was always irrationally optimistic fan even then). We came back to tie at 110 all in regulation; 122 all after 1st OT and 141-132 final score. Couldn't believe that some fans left between the 1st and 2nd OT periods to beat the crowd exist and traffic.
That team finished 19-10; scored 100+ in 7 games and were 5-2 in those losing 104-112 @ Memphis and 127-102 @Southern Miss(also gave up over 100 in 6 games going 2-4 in those games. The free food then was free soda at 8 points, free medium fries at 90 and free Big Mac at 100. Only 5 times did we score less than 80 points. Avg points per game scored was about 94 and points allowed about 86.

Ah, good 'ole Wally Ball - never met a shot he didn't like. My roommates and I tried one game (on the radio I think, don't believe it was televised) to drink for every time he shot the ball. Not all of us made it to the end.

Google says Neo set it with 33. NAW had 29 in a game and at the time was 3rd highest. Can't figure out who the other two are. Doesn't appear there is an easy database to tell.

In Virginia Tech's ACC era, 30-point games by a freshman:
• Jalen Hudson (Fr.): 32 vs. Wake Forest (3/10/15)
• Landers Nolley (r-Fr.): 30 at Clemson (11/5/19)
• Neoklis Avdalas (Fr.): 33 vs. Providence (TODAY)

Fantastic win and a hell of a game. Providence is legit. It was very physical and had a tournament vibe to it. I know the Greek is going to get all the love here but lots of guys made big shots. For a few minutes I thought I was watching "Blue Chips" as dudes I've never heard of kept coming in an balling out. I think I have like five favorite players on this team. We are gonna be a problem for a lot of teams folks. I am most happy for Mike Young who deserves this team. Now let's see him get them ready for a deep run and let's do some damage Fam. Preseason ACC 12th? I want that posted in the locker room. Hokies!

Let's give Hansberry some love. Until the 10 minute mark in second half he was 0 for 8 from the floor. Right after I made the comment on the game thread about he and Lawal being a combined 1 for 12, he finished the game 6 for 7 and added 15 points (3 free throws) to finish with 17 overall. He was the only one with a double-double. As much as Neo bolstered us early, Hansberry was why we tipped the scales.

That was a ballsy win Fam! I did not have good vibes going into OT, but they came out ready and handled business.
Also nice to get some experience (and a win duh) in basically an away game this early in the season.
Only ugly in OT.
WE SHOT 50% FROM THE FREE THROW LINE.
4 for 8.
Yeah that was driving me up a wall. If providence could've hit a couple threes at the end, we were leaving points on the board which could've bit us
Hey I think this Neo kid might be good at basketball!
Anybody know what the individual single game scoring record is for a Hokie Freshmen ?
I think we might have just seen it.
33 is my guess.

You mean I got bad info on the internet. What a surprise.
I don't think they have by game databases back that far. Sportsreference is best I have found but think they only go back to by game stats to mid 90s

Awesome, I knew he had done it but the context is so much better.

Article on the 25th anniversary of that game in 2013

Per David Cunningham on X/Twitter:
Missed the game 'cause my daughter won state championship in volleyball FAM!
Go Hokies!
That's awesome. Congrats to her & the squad.
FAM!!! It was a hard fought win. Responded to everything and arguably looked their best in OT. Nice way to close it out & start the season 2-0.
Fantastic win and a hell of a game. Providence is legit. It was very physical and had a tournament vibe to it. I know the Greek is going to get all the love here but lots of guys made big shots. We will see if Providence is legit this year under their new coach he has been 34-34 there.
Neo gives me some Luka vibes, FAM!
You aren't alone there. One of his nicknames is "Greek Luka"
Let's give Hansberry some love. Until the 10 minute mark in second half he was 0 for 8 from the floor. Yes, why we tipped the scales
"no no no! Oh hell yeah!" - me watching him take that 3 in OT
We got ourselves a point forward FAM!
