Return of a Thorn
The Hokies and 49ers have matched up 14
previous times on the hardwood with VT
owning a 8-6 lead in the series. The Hokies are 5-1 at home against the 49ers. The last time that these clubs met was 1999 in Blacksburg, a game I was at and the Hokies won 60-52. Charlotte was a real pain in the 1990s for the Hokies.
Aaron Fearne is in his third season at Charlotte, where he is 32-35 overall. He had a really strong first season but last year was a mess after losing a very heavy Senior roster and the portal didnt pan out very well to fill those holes. This season seems different in terms of portal impact. Fearne is Australian and relies heavily on recruiting internationally. Five of his top eight are international players.
So far this season, the 49ers opened with wins over Indiana State and Tennessee Tech. Last game out, they lost to Davidson 62-55.
They rely heavily on their starters and four average double-digit scoring. Bench scoring only provides about 12 points a game.
They are led by Sophomore Guard Ben Bradford, with 17 points a game as the shooting guard. Senior Point Guard Dezayne Mingo transferred in from Marshall and is putting up 12 points and 4 assists as the 1-2 guard punch. Major Freeman, a transfer Guard from Siena is second in scoring for the 49ers at 13.3 ppg. Anton Bonke transferred in from Providence and is a mountain in the middle at 7'2 and 270 lbs. He is putting up a double-double at 11 points and 11 rebounds. The final starter is Freshman Forward Jarne Elouna Eyenga from Belgium. He adds about 5 points and 5 rebounds.
Mingo and Bradford are on the floor over 30 minutes a contest so if they get into foul trouble it really will hamper the 49ers. Bradford and Bonke do struggle with fouls so going at Bradford early could be a huge tipping point.
Defensively, expect to see a variety of presses that starts by focusing on offensive rebounds and then rather than moving straight back to half court, attempt to slow the opponent from getting the ball across mid-court by "tagging up". They use a high pressure man-to-man defense where they crash the boards for offensive rebounds and tag up on an opponent and assume responsibility for that man all the way up the court.
Offensively, the 49ers use a variety of dribble penetration set plays. They shoot 41% from the perimeter on 21 attempts so that helps to spread the floor by forcing opponents to defend all the way out, creating driving lanes. They get to the line frequently but are only shooting 64% from the stripe. Expect to see alot of elbow pick and roll plays between Bradford and Bonke.

Hokies can't afford to be lackadaisical on defensive rebounds. Charlotte is averaging 15 offensive boards and 20 second chance points a game.
One concern to watch will be Hansberry and Lawal foul situations having to counter Bonke in the paint.
Hoping we get some Dorn V Bonke action in the paint if for nothing else the entertainment value of two enormous 7 footers going at it. Curious if they have crossed paths before in international play as there is heavy crossover between Belgium and German basketball.
This game isn't expected to be close but may simply come down to fatigue. The Hokies have a much more reliable bench so any Charlotte substitutions really create an offensive talent gap on the floor.
Hokies win 96-72.

LET'S GO
HOKIES!
Thread updated above.
Thanks. Your write ups are just what I need before games with opponents I know absolutely nothing about. Appreciate your efforts.
Bedford flying out the gates. 3 for 3 to have 9 of Hokies first 20 points
These jerseys are so much cleaner than the block "VT" ones.
Multiple teams seem to have the block style...total laziness from Nike.
Basketball refereeing has gone to total shit.
If a guy slips to the floor and you are even in the vicinity, it's a whistle.
Also: over the back is apparently not a thing anymore??
Kind of like the carry? Just in the rulebook but conveniently ignored?
Bonke and Dorn getting into it. Fun times
Having Avdalas on the floor makes us a very different and much better team.
Bonke in foul trouble
For you stats guys. The play: VT ball, long shot, misses, long rebound towards the corner, T Johnson goes for rebound and gets it, but his momentum is taking him out of bounds, he leaps and try's to throw the ball off the opposing player, that doesn't work and now the opposing player has the ball. This all takes place in a matter of 2 or 3 seconds. Question: Does Johnson get credited for an offensive rebound and then a turnover?
Not a real crisp effort so far
Charlotte already with 11 offensive rebounds in 1st half
Glad we got a surge in final two minutes. Not a great half
Difference is they have been terrible from perimeter and we hit our free throws and we're good from perimeter
Hokies heating up and stretching the lead
Dorn with the devastating blind side block. Dude never knew what he ran into.
Berlin Wall, right there
Letting them hang around. Really need a dominant 4 minute stretch to really separate
Total opposite out of that timeout. Charlotte with all the energy and our guys going through the motions. Not fighting for offensive boards and just look lethargic
Welp, this is turning into one heck of a collapse.
4 point game
Lawal with a double-double.
Team just looks completely out of sorts
The last 10 mins or so the Hokies have looked terrible. About to have our first deficit of the game after being up 17 about 8 mins ago
56% shooting for them to our 28%
Neo looks like someone shot his dog. No one trying to get the ball inside
Shooting 26% in the second half ๐คฎ
They are allowing some pretty hard contact.
That last one they called but should have been looked at for flagrant. There was no attempt at the ball.
Lawal shooting 3s isn't it
Getting outhustled on every loose ball
Mike Young with a bit of heat check on Tyler Johnson there
Give up 2 offensive rebounds beyond 15 feet on one possession...just awful
Five straight offensive rebounds. Good thing they turned it over.
This team looks every bit as disinterested in trying hard that our football team looked to start the season.
Double teaming Neo on the offensive side has completely mentally screwed the team up
I still don't understand basketball fouls
The NCAA is becoming the NBA...as long as you flop around enough, you get a whistle.
Even if there was no contact..apparently the new standard is "appearance of a foul"
Not happy about it, I find NBA games nearly unwatchable.
Oh...and the endless interruptions for reviews are complete garbage.... like the 2 min one we just had to take 3 seconds off the clock... and, as is so often true with replay, we couldn't even figure out how to get it right
AVDALAS WITH THE JAM
30-36 from the stripe. Thank God!!!!
Pretty ugly performance overall, lets hope we got that out of our system.
I'll take the win, but that was an awful half of basketball by Tech
Yes... will take the win. But there is a whole lot to work on
At-least-one-of-our-men's-teams-doesn't-collapse-in-the-face-of-adversity-FAM!
Whew FAM
Apparently our players weren't the only ones not prepared for Charlotte.
Hokies manager team got blasted by the Charlotte managers. 106-58. One of the Charlotte managers put up 50 points by himself.
I won't be looking at that stat again. All I know is 4-0, baby.
We know there will be tough games aplenty coming up, so it's good to see us get tough enough to win one.
