OT:Whiskey, Gin, Vodka, Tequila, Cigars and Hokies

yes

I think its about time TKP had an alcohol section. Now this won't be the tots special but it will be high class or whatever class we take this forum. I am envisioning some sweet ideas on drinks, favorite bourbons, vodka or even a simple margarita recipe. We all know come game day we have our own little concoction of our favorite drink along with a few shots ready to be devoured.

SO lets get this going.

My go to would have to be Makers Mark and Ginger Ale.. not todays ginger ale but yes

I also enjoy Cigars every once in awhile!!!

Hendricks and Fever Tree Tonic with a cucumber slice. Not necessarily on game day, its just a damn good drink.

That or a Woodford Reserve Manhattan, neat.

Reserve Manhattan ohh man now you're talking!

Indeed, Hendricks and tonic has become my favorite cocktail. Gin is the happy hangover

My favorite bourbon is Buffalo Trace

Eagle Rare single barrel from Buffalo Trace is absolutely delicious. Neat or whiskey ice rock, can't go wrong. I've only had the 10 year, but I imagine I'd have to change my pants after one sip of the 17 year bottle.

Best whiskey recipe:
Mix with a little ginger ale.

Best non-margarita tequila recipe:
Pour down sink

I don't really drink anymore, but my go-to tequila recipe used to be Prestige Tequila mixed with Simply Lemonade, which inevitably leads to just Prestige Tequila.

If you're unfamiliar with Prestige liquors (I've never seen them in Virginia), they come in a plastic bottle, and the labels, at least for their tequila, explicitly state that the production is overseen by the Mexican government, so you know it's good.

It goes down like battery acid, but when you just finished your last undergraduate exam and you see a 5th on sale for 8 dollars, it's a no-brainer, really.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

I've been trying to like Tequila, but something about it just does not sit well in my stomach. It just seems to overpower everything I mix with it except something stupidly sweet and that opens a whole new can of worms. And if you mix it to the point where you can't taste it you might as well just get cheap vodka.

My college get drunk cheap go to was always Evan Williams. Not harsh, pretty good, and $14 for a handle and $12 when on sale. My brother always preferred Fighting Cock, but the extra proofing wasn't worth the added paint thinner.

Tequila can be pretty good when used in cooking and marinades, especially when grilling. Adds a nice flavor to meats like chicken breast.

Tequila lime chicken is one of my go to's. It's a honey, lime and tequila reduction you use as a glaze on top of a red pepper, cumin and chipotle dry rub.

Best on skinless chicken thighs. Damn, I'm hungry.

It could be worse.

My attitude towards drinking liquor was always "this is going to be disgusting, but I'm just going to power through it because testoterone/adrenaline." In a blind taste test, there's a decent chance that I couldn't even tell you the type of liquor, let alone the brand or quality. It kind of all just tastes like alcohol to me, and I've never really liked the taste of any of it.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

I hate to be a downer but...

Such tackle. Very D-Line. Wow.

Well for $8 in a plastic bottle it all just tastes like rubbing alcohol with your choice of puke(tequila), wood(whiskey), rotten fruit(rum), or extra rubbing alcohol(vodka) flavoring.

Then again like beer it's an acquired taste. After a while the alcohol taste is dulled and you can get some other flavors. That's why in college you drink all the Aristocrat to build up your terrible taste tolerance for four years. Then when you graduate and can afford good stuff the lower amount of garbage in the liquor opens up the actual flavors.

For me, there was never a big difference between the $8 plastic bottle stuff and the top-shelf stuff. I guess I just gave it up before I acquired a taste for it. Same thing with wine. There's just not a big difference to me between box wine from Kroger and a $30 Bordeaux.

It's probably just as well that I didn't acquire a taste for it--Cutting back on that was absolutely the best decision for me, for reasons other than my lack of appreciation for the taste. I pretty much just stick to quality beers now days and keep them relatively few and far between.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

There are some better Tequilas out there that are pretty smooth. There are also different styles. Reposado is allright. I like the Patron version and have heard the 1800 brand is good (haven't tried it yet). Just like bourbons there are different levels of quality and price.

If you guys like smooth whiskey check out Knappogue Castle. It's an Irish single malt and it's one of my favorites!!

Onward and upward

Game day calls for Wild Turkey, and a splash of Coke.

A good summertime favorite cocktail would have to be the Mojito, with a stick of fresh sugar cane core for stirring.

But if you catch me at a bar, I'm likely to have the beer that I have never had before or a nice West Coast IPA.

Wild Turkey or Paddy's Irish Whiskey for me

@VTimHokie85

For whiskey, 1792 is usually a pretty good fallback. Gentleman Jack has also been known to work wonders for me.

For cigars, haven't smoked a lot, but the Rogue Armageddon is probably my favorite.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Gentleman Jack is great. Straight up.

On a similar note, ever been on the tour at the Jack Distillery?

Bloody Mary (Zangs to be exact.) That's my option if I am hung over. Otherwise Yuengling is my go to if I have the forethought to buy something beforehand.

I've never had Zangs but Zing Zang is always in my fridge. DIY Bloody's are always great too but take some tinkering to get right

I use my Grandmothers 50 yr old recipe for Bloody Marys. Most definitely worth
the effort.

@AMB4VT

I'm not from Maryland, but the Bloody's that I've had with a touch of Old Bay are very nice.

But a long lived, family recipe always wins.

Sure does! I am usually so disappointed when I order a bloody mary from a bar.
But I have had decent ones. I had one at the beach once that had shrimp in it. OMG
was it delicious!

My dad woo'ed my mom by bringing her Carol Lee Donuts. Gotta try them with Crown Maple. Excellent idea.

@historyhokie.bsky.social

I'm normally a Makers girl but I recently brought Buffalo Trace. I was very impressed with it.
Its slightly cheaper than Makers but finishes just as smooth. I mix mine with Ginger Ale.
I also recently found Crabbie's Ginger beer which also tastes good with a splash of bourbon
and lime. I love trying new beers as well.

@AMB4VT

Have you tried Rebel Yell? It taste pretty similar to makers (although a bit lighter.)Best yet, its half the price at $22 a handle.

Dude yes I loved Rebel Yell! That was my dad's go to bourbon. However,
I haven't been able to find it in awhile. It used to be my back up when I ran out of
the top shelf. My ABC store isn't the biggest though. I probably need to head up to
the burg to find it.

@AMB4VT

I'm mostly a craft beer and homebrew drinker, but I do enjoy some bourbon and scotch as well. For scotch, Bowmore 8 year aged in bourbon barrels is surprisingly good for how cheap it is ($22 for a fifth). Fairly smooth and has a nice bourbon influence. I like to put in 1 small ice cube to drop the temperature just slightly. Wild Turkey for game days.
If I'm having a margarita I want it to be 1 part lime juice, 1 part triple sec, and 1 part tequila. On the rocks with salt on the rim of the glass. I don't want any of the sweet lime juice or mix. Sugar with my liquor makes me unhappy.

When we moved on from 40oz of Steele Reserve, we tried different ways to get drunk and keep the energy up. Mixing anything with Mountain Dew is a good way to go, usually clear liquor, Aristocrat is ok.

10 years later, I like Jim Beam on the rocks if I am grilling on gamedays. Bourbon, Football, and Fall weather is the trifecta.

Spent some time tailgating in the RV lot by the airport. They have a tradition of inviting everyone together for Communion. Its just a shot of Wild Turkey, but they include all fans from both teams; wish everyone a good game and a safe experience. Its very Hokie.

The Dude Abides

Bourbon, Football, and Fall weather is the trifecta.

YES, THIS!!!!

@AMB4VT

The tailgate that I go to on Houston Street does the same thing - communion. We play Enter Sandman, pass out shots, and then walk to the game.

Mountain Dew Voltage and Hypnotic is strangely good.

I'm still in school so it's KEYSTONE ALL THE WAY. I can't wait to have money..

#38-0

I would trade a fair amount of the money I make now to be able to attend every football game as a student again.

Maybe spring for PBR instead of keystone, just to mix it up a bit.

The Dude Abides

I loved me some PBR. Cheap, as or cheaper, than Natty and tasted much better. Too bad the hipsters had to get their grubby hands on it and ruin it.

I have been out of school for a number of years and I still keep a cube of Keystone light in my pantry for binge drinking during sporting events.

im out of school and still keep some stones around

@VTimHokie85

most beers taste better the more your drink, but keystone has the unique ability for the last one to taste just as bad as the first one.

I like to keep a bottle of my special mix in the golf bag. I make my own Orangecello(you can find a recipe on the web); and then blend it 1 part orangecello, 1 part wild turkey 101, and 1 part American Honey. Makes a great "swing lubricant" especially early in the year when we start playing golf before the weather is actually warm enough to be comfortable.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

I typically do a Wild Turkey and coke, but when I'm in the mood for nicer bourbon, I hit up the A Smith Bowman distillery in Fredericksburg. The John J is quite good - very smooth, even for sipping.

When I go for beer, I typically do something snobby - either some kind of dark stout (typically a Russian Imperial), or a strong IPA.

It was a catch

George Bowman Rum is probably my favorite rum these days, and I like a lot of rum. John J is also fantastic.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I also enjoy rum. I had the chance to taste some Kraken last year. Quite good. haven't had John J though

John J is a bourbon, George is the rum. It took me a few trips to the store before I realized they were the same distillery but I like them both. George is definitely smooth, and not too sweet.

Kraken is awesome. It's a little strong for me sometimes (I can't always do black rum unless I have a good mixer on hand) but it's quite good and it's got the same name as one of my favorite Panthers!

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

ah, that would explain why I haven't had John J.

Kraken is what I've always imagined rum should be like. It does come on strong, but seems to meld well with pretty much anything you want to cut it with that would remotely go well with rum.

Oh god kraken, it seems like there's always a story to tell when this stuff is broken out

ohhhhh unfortunately I do.... maybe we'll have to share some stories next year at a tailgate good sir. Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

Hell Yes.

Getting drunk of. Kraken right now. It's the ultimate rum and coke beverage

This weekend I plan on investing in some Bourbon to see what the craze is about. I've done some research and found that the "best" and "most liked" Bourbon out there are: Blantons, Woodforest Reserve, Makers, Four Roses, Buffalo Trace..

Do people agree? And other than mixing with Ginger Ale, what are some other good "Mixes" that don't involve a bunch of ingredients?? (aint nobody got time for that). PLEASE HELP!

VT 12'... Exit light, Enter night.

Mixing with coke is fine, as is doing a sour (with just a dash of grenadine, depending on how sweet you like stuff).

It was a catch

A good bourbon you don't really need anything except a splash of water or just drink it neat. A bit of sours mix isn't too bad on occasion if that's your thing. Soda water can be a good addition too.

I tend to stay away from anything besides ginger ale or soda water for good whiskeys since most other stuff detracts too much from the whiskey's flavor or over powers it. Save the coke for the cheaper stuff, vodka, and rum.

For mixing with coke/ginger ale I prefer jack Daniels. For on the rocks Jameson is currently my favorite if I have the money to spend on it

jameson is very smooth and drinkable, if you're going on the rocks or a shot that's the way to go.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

I'd advise getting Makers and Buffalo Trace (IMO, they taste better neat than Woodford or Four Roses). First, try a sip or two neat (just in a glass, no additives). Then try adding just a little ice, you'll notice the flavor of the whiskey will change. As more ice melts, the flavor will change more. Maybe, if you're not really a whiskey drinker, you'll like the flavor when more ice melts (just don't give up after one sip).

For mixers, I use ginger ale as the mixer for any bourbon I don't like on the rocks. Whiskey sour isn't bad either, (whiskey, lemon juice, sugar). Mint juleps are also delicious (whiskey, mint and sugar).

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

Try Elijah Craig. It is very good and the price point is great for the quality.

Check out the wikipedia entry for all the brands: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_whisky_brands
It is interesting to see which compannies make what.

Bourbon is used in mint juleps (traditionally made with four ingredients: mint leaf, bourbon, sugar, and water). I tried this for the first time last year and enjoyed it. Despite the name and association with the Kentucky Derby this drink is very potent. Done right in a pewter cup (shaved ice) it will form a layer of frost on the outside.

#Let's Go - Hokies

Now you're talking...mixology is my next favorite passion. Recently, barrel-aged cocktails have become the next great thing. My favorite is the Boulevardier with a nice rye, but any well-crafted prohibition era cocktail with some of the modern twists (bitters, infusions, shrubs, etc.) will do very nicely.

For the best in craft cocktails, check out this site: http://drinkstraightup.com/

or any of Dale DeGroff's sources ( http://www.kingcocktail.com/)

Everything from these two will be excellent!

Just curious if anyone has tried Ogden's Underground Herbal Spirit??

@AMB4VT

Love me some rum but being a poor college kid I usually have to go with cheaper stuff, but if I had my pick of the litter id ho with makers mark. My girlfriends dad brings a bottle every time he comes out to a game and if further confirms that he's is THE MAN.

Also scotch and club soda is delicious I could drink it all day

Get there early. Last year it was packed tight and every single brewery ran out of beer by 5, IIRC. Then again, I think only 3-4 breweries came. Far cry from Brew-Do, but it's something!

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Thanks! Yeah I hope to get out there early since it's going to be a nice day. I went to a beer fest in Norfolk last year and it was pretty awesome so I said if I win tickets to this I was going and sure enough I won. Looks like they'll have 8 or so breweries this year as long as they all show up.

Oh it's a great time. Last year they had 2 great bands and one other one. haha. It sounds like it's growing if they've got 8 breweries, which is great. Last year I think it was just Bull&Bones, The River Company, Lost Rhino, and Devil's Backbone. All are fantastic but they couldn't keep up with the demand. I'm just waiting for Brew Do. October 25th, the Saturday after Thursday night with Miami. I'm excited for that weekend.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I'm more beer these days than anything else. Will have to create a separate thread when I can give it the proper attention. Where is Beer Control?!?

It could be worse.

I expect the first to go up on Sunday.

β€œThese people are losing their minds. This is beautiful.”

Can I get a shout out to Keystone Light? Sorry, college student.

Also, why the hell does everyone drink bourbon?

Because it's delicious. That and in school when we would sip on a glass of bourbon, sometimes with a cigar in hand, it would perpetuate an aura of manliness that would bring and impress all the ladies. I might be exaggerating slightly, but it did help at times.

Because its really, really damn good... and it'll get ya drunk... and it'll keep ya warm during the winter...

Don't worry, young padawan. You're still early in your training. Full Bourbon appreciation generally comes after graduation.

Yes I wish i could leg this 1000 times, in college it was eh maybe a bourbon or jack or rum. For some reason once I finished college two years ago its been a cigar in one hand and then bourbon on the rocks in the other. I think its the last step in puberty/becoming a man.

@AMB4VT

I never really liked whiskey stones... In order to cool the drink down at all you have to put all 9 stones in there. They also lose their chill extremely fast. Then you have to wash and dry them before freezing them or you might as well be putting an ice cube in the drink. Not to mention how you don't get any of the benefit of the water bringing out additional flavors in the drink.

Agreed....prefer the ice sphere or hand-chopped large cubes

Because it puts hair on your peaches?

Why? Because in my last semester at Tech, one of my roommates was from Kentucky. He introduced me to Jim Beam and Coke. I was hooked. Been hooked since. Get a can of coke and pour Jim in. Good to go. Start with that, move on to Jack, Maker's, etc. You'll get there.

I preferred Milwaukee's Best as an undergrad. Or Southpaw. In VA, it was MB. In NC, it was Southpaw.

We used to pick up a 30 pack of Milwaukee's Best and buy an $8 dollar bottle of Amaretto. Mix a little of the Amaretto into the Milwaukee's Best and you've got an 8.0% alcohol Dr. Pepper (that's what the combo somehow tastes like).

β€œThese people are losing their minds. This is beautiful.”

Put the Amaretto in a shot glass, splash of bacardi 151 on top, light it up - drop it in a glass with beer - and you have yourself a Flaming Dr. Pepper.

As a poor college students it was Beast or Beast Light. Then the trend came along amonst beer makers to increase the alcohol content slightly and add the word "Ice" to the name. More alcohol, same price! When that happened I discovered 40s (and occasionally a 64oz) and the malt liquor within them.

I used to start the night with a 40 or two of whatever cost about $2 or less and had "Ice" in the name. This meant malt liquor with more alcohol than beer and more alcohol still than the non "Ice" version of said malt liquor. I was a cheap... I mean, value conscious drunk.

If I was bored, occasionally I would get a bottle of Mad Dog 20/20, but only the grape flavor because it had the most alcohol. The bottle fit perfectly in you back pocket. The next day was never fun, but that night sure was, or so I am told.

Dark n Stormy. This has got to be the best summer drink of all time. I've been in Charleston for 4 years and this bad boy is everywhere. I, however, think I make it the best. Over ice in a tall glass:

3 Parts Goslings Bermuda Black Rum
Fill to brim with Goya Ginger Beer (non-alcoholic, spicy version of ginger ale)
2 (or more) lime wedges

Enjoy while grilling, beaching, or any other verb ending in ING.

Try it with Blenheim's Spicy.

We call that apple juice at my house. Goes down like water, but gets you buZed like beer

My wife is a cider-holic, so I will provide a few that she loves:

  • Woodchuck was her gateway drug. She started drinking the Amber and was hooked.
  • She then moved on to Crispin, which is a bit more expensive but really good served SUPER cold.
  • She typically buys Angry Orchard in a can and that is her session cider.
  • We were up visiting my parents in Vermont and visited the Citizens Cider cidery a few weekends ago. They have a couple of really good ciders, including one with ginger that I really liked. Their best-selling brew is Unified Press. It is drier and more like a wine. She has started to move in the dry direction, as Woodchuck now tastes a bit too sweet for her.

Some other ones she has liked are Hornsby's, Jack's and Stella's cidre (fancy with the -re).

Foggy Ridge Cidery is in Floyd County and available in the wine section of many stores. Try that in place of wine at a good dinner.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

For some reason we decided to play Cider Pong one night in our house, worst decision of senior year...

Ah, reminds me of Cellar Thursdays. A group of us would get either a couple tables or when they opened up the champagne room, that pretty much became our spot and we would get pita pizzas and pitchers of Woodchuck. You could get fed and buzzed for about $10. Then I went downstairs there and they had Strongbow. Pretty much always go with the Strongbow now unless I want to support local, in which case Bold Rock does fine.

Why, oh why, do things like this only seem to happen in Australia and Russia? It's just not fair.

Since everyone has the bourbon under control, I'll post a more off-the-wall drink. It's delicious and tastes like fruit loops.

Open a Corona (Light). Drink the beer out of the "neck" of the bottle. Put in a shot of Bacardi Limon (lemon flavored rum). This is a seriously tasty drink; however, you have to watch your consumption. After 2 or 3 most people (especially the ladies who LOVE this drink) are down for the count.

Worst hangover of my life is when I drank 6-7 of these in college. I didn't move at all the next day and ate Hot-and-Ready leftovers.

Kind of similar, being the base of Corona Light, in this one:
- 1 bottle Corona Light
- 1 can of Bud Light Limarita
- 1 shot of Tequila
- 1/4 lime

Fill rather large VT Stadium Coke Cup with ice (half way). Mix Limarita, and shot of tequila in cup. Gently pour beer up to an acceptable level (almost full bottle). Squeeze lime juice and drop lime in drink.

Go sit on a beach or by the pool.

All about some straight liquor.
My liquor cabinet right now is Woodford, Blantons, the Macallan, Laphroaig, and 1800. Keep trying to convince my roommate to buy some Don Julio.

This weekend I should be smoking cigars and drinking Laphroaig. It's literally the smoothest liquor I've ever tasted.

What do you have by Laphroaig? Their 14 year is awesome. A few of my friends chipped in for their "triple wood" aged scotch (aged in boubron barrels, quarter cask, and sherry) for a friend's birthday last fall. I heard that's pretty good, too.

I just got the ten year. Never had it before, so I figured I'd start with the basic stuff. I know their 18 year won some awards recently, so I might go for that soon, or I might save for some Lagavulin.

Off the wall liquor. Much Chartreuse. Such alcohols. Tastes like deliciousness. Woof.

Such tackle. Very D-Line. Wow.

If anything was going to taste like that color, it would taste just like it does. Probably because the color is named after the drink.
