The recipe is clear... just send pressure with zero or single coverage. Beck struggles tremendously when under pressure.
I know our guys on the back end can't really keep up on every play, but it's better than letting Beck complete 95% of his passes on the day.

Bermuda grass grows well in Blacksburg but usually gets overseeded with cool season ryegrass to make it look green in the late fall or winter. I know they occasionally skip over seeding (ie covid year). So maybe they chose to skip since the back end of our schedule is away heavy. This is a common process for all southern teams where cool season grass does not grow

Burmeister had some explosive mobility though and although had a noodle arm, could be efficient in the short/intermediate passing game. Drones has literally 0 QB passing skills/mechanics/awareness and is just a battering ram with a strong arm.
Drones is 7th in Virginia Tech history for passing yards. Has better completion percentage than Druckenmiller, Glennon, Deshazo, Furrer, Taylor, Thomas and Randall. Has fewest INTs by far in top ten QBs. Has fifth Highest QB rating of Hokies QBs.

Also the low INTs I think is misleading. We basically don't have a passing offense with him so we just don't throw the ball often.
Even as terrible as we have been this season, Drones is like third in the ACC in touchdowns this season. If we had a pulse on defense our season might be very different.

Pop isn't the long term solution. He wouldn't survive a full game with the same play calling. The long story is the professional coaches who evaluate talent still think that Drones is the better QB and that is why they start him. The frustration is Drones has a strong will to win, a great running form at times, and can make the occasional throw. It just seems like he locks on to a receiver way to early, and throws it regardless of coverage.
Forget pocket awareness have you seen Pops general awareness this year. He'd get killed out there.
Pop would likely be injured by some of those hits Drones takes on a regular basis.

Didn't get to watch the game, unfortunately, wanted to see Franklin being talked to, but oh well. I'll try and power through the DVR I guess.
Saw the box score and noticed that Pop was in? Was there any particular reason outside of us being down so much and wanting to get him some run? I saw that he had only three pass attempts but was only 50yds. shy of Drones' passing totals on the day. 😬🙃 And that he accounted for one of our two TDs.
Drones took a really hard hit to head and had to be helped off field. Pop hit one really long sideline go route and then had a check down turn into a 36 yard total after run down sideline. After that it was forgettable for both.
Ah shit...did they mention anything about how Drones was doing afterwards? Guess we'll see if he's in concussion protocol this week ahead of UVA? Hopefully it's nothing major and they just decided to sit him the rest of an out of hand game.
Soon after he came out they mentioned that Drones refused to go into the med tent, told the staff he was fine, and was on the sidelines with his helmet in hand ready to go back in if needed. Sounded like he's okay.
My problem with that is based on the hit he took...
1. They should have taken his helmet as soon as he refused to get checked out
2. Med tent choice shouldnt have been an option
Most guys at that level given the choice are going to be gamers, even if its not well thought out.
The sideline reporter said that he had his helmet in his hands and was available to go back in.
A lot of "Start Pop" hype. Count me out on that the only thing making this offense move at all is our stable of running backs and Drones pure size. Pop won't last a full quarter behind this OL without an injury or a fumble.

I don't know, man. Drones showed literal negative IQ by running out of the pocket and then going out of bounds on a 4th down to give Miami 8 yards. And the despite the stupidity of the inadvertent whistle, Drones ran straight backwards while being pursued and didn't even deserve that bailout. Put Pop in and run the triple option against UVA
Drones also had 3+ first down runs that Pop has 0 chance to convert. Drones is playing hard still I absolutely hate him as a QB but he give us a better chance to win than Pop in the option offense we're running.
And yes Drones has bone head plays. Running Ob but he didn't know that defender was that close until he put his hand on him. Not pitching the first down conversion probably netted in less yards but he still got the first down. His reads are bad...but let's remember Pop has run into blocked defenders in wide open space twice this season. I don't see anything that says he's any better of a decision maker
The first one where he had no other defenders on that entire side of field and forty yards of open field in front of him and ran right at the only one out there that if he even ran a yard to either side he is gone really spoke volumes for me. Our WR was driving the defender outside and Pop ran right into both of them. I immediately did the ah ha if he practices like that no wonder he hasn't unseated Drones as QB1.
That run has been burned into my head since it happened and then he did it his next time on the field like 2 weeks later not nearly as bad but still. Pop has a ton of fire and talent but the game is still moving at light speed for him and he's not processing it.
They're both extremely flawed. Pop has better touch on deep balls, but behind this offensive line he's a dead man if you leave him in there long enough, especially against a defense like Miami's.
Drones has the physical tools to survive this OL and the aggressiveness to do it, but his decision-making just keeps getting worse and destroys drive after drive. It's infuriating to watch.
Did you see when Pop dragged three Miami defenders into the end zone?
Let's be clear, Pop stayed on his feet long enough for three offensive lineman to push the pile into the endzone while being stood up by Miami defenders. As soon as he made contact the right guard has Pop in a bear hug from behind and is driving it forward.
I'm not sure how many of those plays Pop would have survived.
Drones is an energizer bunny. Pop is a good changeup option, but I wouldn't bet on him surviving a game of being pummeled four quarters.
I saw our boys four times in person this year... Drones is a very bad QB. His decision making is bad and he can't throw and can only sorta run... honestly, the best thing about today is I never have to see this year's offense in person again. That being said, I would run him back out there against UVA and just run the ball over and over and over. Mix in play action about 25% of the time and we score a lot. Our coaches just can't seem to get the playcalling right and right when we get going they think it is time to throw downfield only for an incomplete/holding/sack. Please just go forward... we can average 2.5/yc and get first downs all day against them. Our running backs are legit. Please run the ball and mix in some play action. That is all we need to do. Oh, and just to be clear, I super appreciate Drones' effort... he gives all he has to give. I am just going to be happy to see that big black truck roll out of town and not running our offense anymore. It is a tough watch.
Also, we have 3 good RBs and Drones so we can rotate them out and keep them fresh.
Late to this party but the kids made me proud with their effort. I think the coaching isn't nearly as good as the effort on the field.
Refs have to live with themselves, that was pathetic. I understand that there is a desperate desire for Miami to compare well with ND, but the not so subtle agenda sucked for us.
Don't really get the drones hate on here, the kid is trying to carry the team on his back. He isn't great but he busts a gut with effort.
I stepped away from TKP and VT sports for a few years to (try and) take care of family issues, but I hope the current negativity finds a new outlet.

"Current negativity?" We just hired James Franklin! Where have you seen anybody being negative lately outside of this thread?? Unless we're winning by 3 or more scores, game threads have always skewed negative no matter the outcome, and I'd wager the same is true around the internet.
As far as Drones, I'm really not sure what you want us to say instead. Speaking personally, he's a paid professional now, and I will critique him like one. He puts in a lot of effort, but the fact remains that he just isn't very good at playing quarterback. Which sucks because at one time it looked like he would be. Pointing that out and getting frustrated with it isn't "hate."
The effort of promoting Miami over ND may be moot with the beating ND put on Syracuse.
People forget that A) Miami beat ND B) Miami also blew out Syracuse
first game back in lane since 2007. thoughts
1. it can still get loud, but the current crowd kinda lacks situational awareness
2. incredibly poor secondary play today, that is mind boggling to see that in person
3. drones is just grant noel, but willing to take a hit. pops first drive was a painful indictment of drones.
4. jeff overton jr is going to be an absolute problem, and im glad hawkins has another year
5. there will be a massive roster turnover next year and im ok after seeing that in person. effort is good though
Watson's first drive was one big play and a 3 yard run. His next drive was a pass to check down that went for 38 but then fumbled it away after that. Really strong take on basically four plays that produced a TD and then a game killing turnover.
All true and mostly agree, but you have to admit that the completion to Greene near the GL never happens with Drones.
Watson stood in the pocket and delivered with pressure bearing down.
Drones would have gotten instant happy feet then probably rolled right into Bisanthe.
drones wasnt making that throw, and that was a power run.

It really was...by the Right Guard that picked Pop up and carried him across the line through three defenders. The Right Guard bear hugs Pop from behind at the moment he makes contact and then two other lineman also push the pile.
This is where POP got flagged for celebration. Usually it gets called when the scoring player faces an opposing player, here we see it's the Miami player facing POP.
Lesson, the way to draw a penalty then is to face the celebrating player and walk towards him.
Just finished the game. About what I expected, not thrilled with Monty calling timeouts down 10 with a minute to go and the ball on our side of the field and down to the backup QB. Just gave Miami time to score. Nothing to gain there, just take the 10 pt loss as success and get on to the rivalry game.
