Absolutely hilarious.

I think the "public business happens in public" point is a good one and one that may have an impact on VT athletics in the next few months given all the moving parts around AD and coach search.

I'm not advocating for every single discussion to be public, just that we make sure we are dotting our teas and crossing our eyes.

MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Have been listening to a couple podcasts down here the last couple weeks, from Ovies and Giglio to Adam Gold and... Yeah, this whole thing is getting messy. Long story short, boosters and university administrators made the decision to hire Belichick without consulting their AD, Bubba Cunningham, and did it all behind closed doors. Now, with everyone realizing this was probably an absolutely terrible decision, they're now trying every avenue possible to legally get out of the contract.

Its worth pointing out that the majority of journalists and news people here in NC come out of UNC and its system (to be fair, every public university in NC is a part of the UNC system). For decades there has always been a good relationship between UNC and the media.

This is an effort by UNC to use public pressure to get themselves out of a bad deal. They know what they're doing, and its only going to get messier before its resolved.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

This feels like it's two shades too cute if it's an inside job. A former provost who clearly wasn't a fan of the actions at the time quits as a result of them and then files a lawsuit airing all of the dirty laundry surrounding the hire doesn't seem like an effort by UNC to do anything. Feels like they got way over their skis because they could get Bill and now it's catching up with them. I'm sure they'd be fine getting out of it quietly, but this is big and messy. Not sure how that helps them with anything.

Oh, I should clarify there are definitely 2 sides of the same UNC coin here. There are still people within UNC who are ride or die with Belichick, and this is a power grab by the others to expose what happened to get that power back. Its messy, and its fun to watch

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

For the record, not EVERY public university in NC is part of the UNC system (first and foremost - NC State).

NC State is part of the UNC system. I'm pretty sure every public university is in the system.

Surprised I didn't know that. Regardless, the original comment was that journalists come out of the UNC system, as if journalists coming out of any of the 16 universities are functionally identical. I would argue there are probably substantial differences in the ones coming out of the different tiers within the system, and that aligning the universities for that purpose is probably meaningless.

Couldn't happen to a better bunch of Tarholes! Also Belichick is just taking an axe to his legacy and I'm loving it. Think it's pretty obvious his success was primarily due to a once in a lifetime QB in Tom Brady. Then practically blackballed from the NFL due to how big of a jerk and cheater he was known to be, scams UNC into a college job, gets a trophy girlfriend almost a third of his age. Couldn't write a better script.

Would you be willing to destroy your career's legacy for multiple millions of dollars? That's what Bill is doing and I think the vast majority of people would do the same thing given the opportunity.

"Hokie religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid." Han Solo

Me personally, I would retire and find something to do that wasn't what I made my millions doing. I am however not of the same personality as a lot of people that want to work till they die and I haven't made millions of dollars. I'm trying to be done by 55 and do whatever I want with my time. Plenty of things to do in the world that isn't work and there is plenty more to do if you have multiple millions to use.

Me? I'd absolutely do it. But no way if I already have Belichek money.

Look i dont fault the guy. He's got to find a way to fund his GF's college education when she starts next Fall.

Surprised he didn't start a NC 529 account. Plenty of time for her to age into it

In NC? Shit, why bother with that. Just get a place and establish local residency for long enough to qualify for in-state tuition. Then its like $8k per year.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

You work at NC State, right? Not sure if you would know this, but have to ask in case you/someone else here does. If my daughter applies to a place like UNC or NC State from out-of-state, gets in but defers, we move down there for a year while she takes a gap year working, registering a car there, paying taxes ... would she be eligible for in-state tuition when she starts? I'm guessing no as you probably need to establish residency before even applying, but don't know. Curious if you knew.

FWIW, she is more interested in Georgia and College of Charleston than anyplace in NC or VA and I know the rules vary from state-to-state. And her favorite spot in NC was Wake Forest, so private anyway/no impact on pricing there.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

My wife used to work at State, but left about 5 years ago. I'll be honest I have no idea the answer to that. All I know is that you would need to have NC listed as your primary residence when you apply, but not really sure how they determine that.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Okay, thank you. I've assumed - without really knowing - that schools would 100% find some way to avoid giving in-state tuition to people who move there. Of course, if you go to school from out-of-state and move to that state/work over the summers there/pay taxes there, you should not get in-state tuition. You were already a student and you should not get reduced fees just because you now stay in the state. But if you move there after applying and work for the necessary time to establish residency before starting school, I'm guessing it still would not be allowed.

Guessing we/she have to do something like move to Georgia or South Carolina, work for the year (or whatever the rule for that state is), pay taxes, register the car ... so that you are now an official resident. Only then apply for the first time after already qualifying as an in-state resident. But who knows?

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

It used to be filing taxes for 2 consecutive years or something like that. You'd have to live there for 24 months, then file after the second year, so it's like a 30 month qualification process. That's why it's really doesn't get "used" that much because of the timing. They do it this way so you can't just buy a place to avoid out of state tuition.

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
@VTnerf on insta, @BuryHokie on twitter, #ThanksFrank

Thank you. That does make sense. I remember - albeit from many years ago - that Virginia was supposed to be one of the hardest to get in-state tuition from. Took a quick peek at South Carolina's rules and they seemed to be a bit more lenient. Don't remember the rules off the top of my head, but think one of them was that you had to live there for a year and another is that you had to have your car registered there. What I could never figure out was does that year need to be done before you even apply to someplace like Clemson, South Carolina or College of Charleston or can you actually apply, then move there and work for a year and only start school after the full year working. Guessing it would not be allowed.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

There's a lot of hoops, otherwise all of the juniors and seniors would have in-state tuition...
My roommate at VT was trying to get into vet school. He was also trying to establish VA residency during that time off before applying. If I recall, after 2 years, neither thing occurred. (I know the Vet school is for VA and MD, but they did take students from other locations occasionally.)

To you from failing hands we throw

@VTnerf on insta, @BuryHokie on twitter, #ThanksFrank

You don't have to do all that. You can negotiate at the tie of admission to get instate rates.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

You forgot and setting up your so-so coaching son to be head coach after you leave Town with your millions.

In fairness, I think Belichick was successful because he was good. Sure, having Brady helped a lot, but as VT fans, we know better than most that there are plenty of coaches that do way worse than the talent level on their team. Plus he was a damn good defensive coordinator on the Giant's glory days teams I grew up with before taking over the Patriots. Talent was there to succeed, but still had to have good coaching to be such a consistent winner.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

I think early Pats dynasty Bill was really good and the primary reason for success. Especially with those first three titles. The defense really carried that team, and a young Brady was more just a really good game manager and heady QB. In his later years, I think his defensive prowess was starting to expire and Brady was carrying the team. Especially with those last few titles. Was good in his day and time but I think well past his shelf life as a coach.

The only part of this story I find interesting is the trophy girlfriend.

She's clearly very good at what she does.

Yeah if anything Belichick is the Trophy and she is the only winner in all of this. He has apparently helped her amass about $8M in real estate from a couple articles I read. Prior to her relationship with him she was thought to have about a $1M net worth due to her modeling career. He helped her buy a "cottage" in Cape Cod and three apartment buildings in Boston.

Somehow that's not much consolation.

No the firing of Bill may have to come sooner based solely on the product on the field. No way they let his son rise from the Head Coach in waiting BS either. His son may be the one damaged the most in this whole ordeal.

Yea, it's wild how inept they are. Looking worse than a Brent Pry team out there.

I went and looked up the contract details - his buyout is an extremely reasonable $1M. The problem for UNC is that the first 3 years of the $50M deal are full-guaranteed, and a termination now would effectively cost the team another $21M on top of the $10M owed for this year alone. I love it.

Nobody says Beli doesn't know how to write a contract!

God that makes me so happy.

God I hate the Tarholes. I was loud and proud in my opinion that Belichik would crash and burn.

This has potential to be even better than I thought!

My personal favorite is that his buyout number is higher than their football budget!

This has FX Miniseries written all over it.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

no, it didn't. Saw some other smoke on IG earlier today talking about the toxic program culture, and Bill refusing to allow anyone at UNC to acknowledge Drake Maye's existence because of Bill's ongoing beef with Kraft.

When this inevitably ends and we look back on it, the hubris of Belichick and his team will be almost impossible to believe.

Why is that? I already believed him to be an egotistical sonofabitch, just from his coaching style. It's not that much of a stretch to believe that his ego was too big for him to be successful at UNC.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

Brought in his staff full of his NFL buddies and his kids - NONE with college experience in a meaningful way

Fired the support staff when he got there - there's a great ESPN piece about how there was nobody left that knew how to set up a recruiting visit, book flights, etc.

Relentlessly talked about being the "33rd NFL team" which is all well and good but college football isn't the NFL and vice versa.

Every chance he had to bring on staff that knew the college game / college recruiting he chose not to and he's paying the price.

I mean, I was skeptical he would be nearly as successful at the college level, particularly considering his last few NFL years weren't exactly stellar.

Then the gold digger girlfriend made the situation even more questionable and bizarre.

But this has gone to complete hell waaaay faster than I would have ever imagined. This isn't a regular dumpster fire, but a napalm-filled dumpster fire....and I love every minute of it.

It seems impossible he lasts beyond this year at this point.

Sounds like they are trying to find "for cause" to get around his 50 mil buyout. The sad part is he has enough money that he could afford to keep them in litigation for years because he wants to until they settle.

UNC have self reported recruiting violations under Bill. Supposedly Bill would take the $1mil buyout (the buyout for him to leave) if he can get a soft landing with another football team or media .... I dont see how another team hires him and he doesn't have any personality so media makes zero sense.

So what exactly would one have to do to have a Recruiting Violation at a time when players are openly paid for play, tampering is not only accepted by essentially expected and you can fly Recruits to campus in Private Jets?

Is the NCAA seriously trying to count how many text messages you are sending in this age???

Edit:

Apparently this: https://bleacherreport.com/articles/25258296-bill-belichicks-cb-coach-unc-reportedly-suspended-alleged-ncaa-rule-violation

The 1 million buyout is for him to leave voluntarily to go to another job. If they fire him it is for somewhere between 20-50 million based on rumors. That is why they are trying to go for the "cause" excuse which he can afford to tie up in limbo forever with lawyers.

Maybe they could link Belichek to some type of academic scandal. You know, a well-respected research institute like UNC with high academic standards, but he did something to allow players to get unacceptable academic benefits. Even grades that they did not deserve by tampering with the scores. No was UNC, the NCAA or the academic accreditation organizations would allow that.

Not to play contrarian here but is this really surprising?

Bill never exactly made himself out to be a pleasant guy in public...did anyone expect him to be anything other than a miserable jerk in private (or at least what he thought was private)?

And would we expect him to attach himself to a happy-go-lucky woman? She's an opportunist with an axe to grind..that should have been pretty obvious from the get-go.

I generally like Pablo and think the NFLPA and Kawhi reporting he has done has been stellar but this feels a bit like pointless piling on.

UNC clearly should have seen this coming and the fact they dove headfirst into it is quite hilarious but this does little to advance any part of the story to me. The Lombardi-Saudi angle I think is potentially much more impactful.

Just when you thought the situation at UNC couldn't get any funnier

This shitshow is about to continue well into the offseason! At a time when UNC needs to get ready for James Franklin coming into Tech.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

100%.

Unfortunately for Jordon, there is this pesky thing called Discovery.

And no one at UNC Athletics wants their emails poured through, particularly Lombardi who was the supposed mole here.

This gets settled out-of-court very, very quickly IMHO. If she is even able find someone who is willing to file this...

She's suing him, so Pablo and Meadowlark media have ZERO reason to settle. She will either drop the suit or get blasted in discovery

I dont think any settlement involves money being exchanged but some vague statement so she can feel like she "won."

Stoke her ego, avoid 6 months of billable hours...win-win.

I doubt this goes past the posturing stage in any case though.

I'm not a legal professional in any way, but I'd have to think that in the first half hour of communication with a lawyer, the phrase "keep this off of social media" has to come up, right?

Which, I mean on one hand, good for her that her team won something, but then you start to notice it every time she's doing anything sports related, and even in her engagement pictures:

Kind of emblematic to this whole shitshow at UNC which is essentially being run by the head coach's girlfriend who is so narcissistic that she thinks a D2 cheerleader title is on par with multiple Super Bowls, to the point of trying to actively overshadow it when it comes to how to run a college football program.

She's suing the journalist, Pablo Torre, who released a transcript of Hudson and Belichick planning for the cancelled UNC show that would have aired on Hulu as well as rundowns of some of the potential content for it. Torre is the journalist who reported on the Clippers' owners paying Kawhi Leonard extra money via a separate company.

Pablo Torre, longtime ESPN contributor known for being a guest on Around the Horn, and The Sports Reporters, with other regular appearances on the Dan Lebatard Show, Highly Questionable, and Outside the Lines. He joined Dan Lebarard's Meadowlark Media a couple years ago and started the Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast with regular guests like Mina Kines, Katie Nolan, Dan Lebatard, and John Skipper.

Why this is a bad idea for Jordon Hudson to go after him, he broke news in September that LA Clippers owner Steve Ballmer (of Microsoft fame) actively circumvented the NBA Salary Cap to pay Kawhi Leonard, and the NBA has launched their own investigation after the fact. It might be like that top 5 Tennessee sighed under butch jones where s think only like 3 started amd they were in the bottom 5 of that class. Maybe the top players are not rated accurately and they just take numbers to look good. I mean they've out recruited us for a while but how many of there players would you really want to have at VT. is there a defensive player we would have wanted? They've been terrible for a decade on defense. we might have wanted linebacker not because they were amazing but because mediocre is an improvement for us. Sure Sam and Drake were good QBs and they have had a couple skill players that were good but overall there haven't been recruiting g battles lost that really hurt 4 years later because they didn't pan out at unc.

Yeah, but in the Transfer Portal era, you have to consider how many of these guys they can even keep?

The rumor has been that both WVU and UNC were throwing bags of cash around in the past couple days and both signed massive classes.

They signed 39 guys....by a quick review, looks like 5-6 who would be slotted to play CB....when it becomes obvious by year one who the top 2-3 are, do you think the others are gonna Stick around??

The other thing I note is that they signed quite a few guys for the Northeast, CA, FL, ect. So when guys like Fran Brown and Deion come calling after next year with the "come back home" message, I bet they lose even more.

With better QB play, they should be more competitive next year but I have very little concern that UNC long-term is going to become any type of Playoff Contender.

In the end, they are run by a bitter old coach who is more interested in being spiteful than helping himself (the whole no Drake Maye on Socials) and a coaching Staff that is equally fueled by ineptitude and Nepotism. Add in a trophy girlfriend who is a constant distraction and a discord between the Athletic Department and Booster base on whether they even want him there and you have a Hindenberg waiting to happen there.

$$$ changes everything.

Somehow, they seem to be producing cash to hire players.

Like with most things, I suspect money will eventually win.

Money only eventually wins because it can survive constant losing. It can wait you out. VT needs football to win so we make money, UNC doesn't need that money so it doesn't need to win. But if VT doesn't win then we have issues in getting money and then if we can't afford a team UNC can best us even if they are incompetent.

Their recruiting class is just more proof their academics don't apply to athletes. You would have to have only two brain cells to commit to play there with all of this going on.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

I think this is true.
GT just recently decided academics for athletes is not important and seeing benefits on the field under Coach Key.

Unc has been doing this FOR DECADES. Classes are for losers.

I've said for years (since the beginning of the academics scandals)...why aren't they better?

We put the K in Kwality

inability to build a team? If they are recruiting a bunch of love-me-some-me kids its kind of hard to build a cohesive team environment.

Because UNC is a basketball factory that only mildly cares about football. They will never be administratively aligned for football success, because it will always be second class to basketball.

They can get all the great players they want, but the funding and the coaching and the facilities, they will always lag behind because basketball gets first dibs on everything they do.
