The Ladies travel to St. Thomas in the British Virgin Islands to play Brigham Young University in the Paradise Jam at 5:30 PM today. The game will be broadcast on the ESPN+ network. The ESPN matchup predictor give the Hokies almost 81% chance of victory. BYU was a pain to track; they don't update statistics during the season.
BYU is 6-0, Tech is 5-1. BYU opened their season with Coastal Carolina winning 91-57; the Hokies played Coastal Carolina Nov 15 winning 82-59. BYU's only close game was at Montana where they won 70-69.

The Cougars currently start a senior #13 Lara Rohkohl 6' 3" forward, a redshirt junior #23 Marya Hudgins 6' 0" Guard, a sophomore #24 Brailey Cannon 6' 1" G/F and two freshmen #2 Sydney Benaly 5' 9" G and #7 Olivia Hamlin 5' 10" G. For the first four games Sophomore #11 Delaney Gibb 5' 10" G stated in place of Hamlin. Bibb has not played in the last two games. Ten players(nine if Bibb isn't available) have played 9.7 or more minutes per game.

BYU is a prolific scoring team, averaging 79.5 ppg. Gibb is the leading scorer at 16.3 ppg; but three of the current starters are averaging 10.7 to 12.5 ppg and Cannon comes in at 9.7. The Cougars average 46 rebounds per game; the Hokies average 42. They are averaging almost 15 offensive boards per game; the Ladies are going to have to concentrate on maintaining position under the basket when on defense or BYU is likely to get too many second chances.
#13 Rohkohl is averaging almost a double-double with 11.2 ppg and 8.8 rebounds per game. She also blocks 2.2 shots per game. She is deadly underneath shooting 72.1% from the field; but she had not attempted a three. The Cougars overall make 8.7 threes per game while shooting only 28% beyond the arc. Overall, helped by Rohkohl's 72.1%, they shoot 43.3%. They only shoot 65.4% from the line. Note: #8 Mackey-Williams has not started a game; my mistake trying to pull data from the box scores.

I hope the ESPN predictor is correct. Guessing based on their score against the common opponent, Coastal Carolina, the two teams are evenly matched. Their big player Rohkohl is taller than any of our starters and may be a challenge. The winner of this game will get the winner of #17 Vanderbilt/Oregon State, which ESPN predicts to be Vanderbilt 92.2%. The winner game will be at noon Saturday; the loser game will be at 2:30.
LET'S GO HOKIES!

Comments
Let's Go
Hokies
Have to shoot the ball much better than we did on Sunday. Also need to keep the rebounds at least even. We were torched on the boards by JMU. Can't expect to win many games when you get out-rebounded to that degree, especially when combined with such a low shooting percentage.
Yep 20 board disadvantage will lose you 9 out of 10 unless you are shooting like 70% from the floor so there are no rebounds
Ladies lead 27-23 at halftime. Daley the only scorer in double figures at ten.
Shooting about like the men's team in the first half. 31.4% FG, 1-8 3-pt.
byu not any better: 33.3% FG, 0-3 3-pt. Fifteen turnovers in the 1st half. that's what's keeping us in the game!
Really bad start in 3rd. BYU on 8-0 run to lead 35-33
So many ticky tack fouls by the same ref on us on defense. The one running the top of the floor. Three off balls calls in 3rd quarter alone
How do you get beat straight to the rim on a missed free throw by them?
Wells was in the act of shooting, she didnt crash into anyone and neither defender was set but the same ref with all the other ticky tack calls her for an offensive foul
And refs facilitate a run to make it 43-38 BYU after 3
Officials took at least four, possibly five points off the board for Hokies in 3rd Quarter
Wenzel is way to casual with the ball in a hurry. No need to rush the pass and puts it out with chance to get within a basket
Holy shit these refs are in the bag. Wenzel gets stiff armed to the floor to allow a three point shot which airbags with Nelson on inside rebound position. BYU player goes over Nelson's back and lands on floor so its a foul on Nelson putting BYU on the line after BYU airball went out the endline
Leaving them wide open straight up from three is a good way to lose
not a disciplined (well-coached?) effort tonight. sandlot style man defense...zero hedging...poor switching. late in the 4th, 3 people standing next to each other handing each other the ball...then a heave across court for a prayer. outside shooters are still not squaring up...out of control and off balance attacking the basket...just look like they are in a hurry. no effort to create or take advantage of mismatches
Yeah Wenzel going under screens every time gave them several 3 pointers in second half. Went under and they were wide open to shoot from the top.
Welp that run to start and end 3rd quarter flipped this game. Another dismal shooting game with mostly open looks.
35%(23/66) from floor and 24% (5/21) from perimeter.
Worst part was BYU's defense was not remotely good.
Why are ESPN and Hokiesports both saying that Kate Sears played?
I thought she was redshirting
I don't recall seeing her but I missed chunks of the first half. Stats show 2 minutes so I could have missed it
they probably don't know her number...she's out for the year. we'd be undefeated right now with her on the floor...great shooter.
My big question is WHAT is going on with Petersen. Looks completely lost on both ends. 0 points in 17 minutes
Was just about to say that Petersen really needs to assert herself. Didn't watch, but the stat line isn't good.
It seems we have Carleigh and one other rotating player carrying the team on any given night. Really need a consistent second and third scorer to step up.
Carleigh though creates alot of our holes with turnovers, ice cold shooting nights and REALLY poor defense, especially on the perimeter. Even tonight, 18 points great...but on 6/18 from floor and 4/13 from the perimeter. She had 5 turnovers too.
Freelon had great game on boards with 14 but was 1 for 5 from floor on 6 offensive rebounds. At least 3 of them should have been easy putbacks.
Baker joined Wenzel shooting 33% on 3 of 9 shooting.
Only ones that had pretty solid games were Daley and Nelson.
Carleigh is still good for at least one pass to nobody a game. Very frustrating.
Ladies play Oregon State tomorrow at noon. Broadcast hasn't been announced.
I'm seeing 2:30 PM EST on ESPN+
Odd ESPN app for me still shows Noon.

It also shows the game being at Oregon St in Gill Coliseum.
Quality sports coverage brought to you by Mickey Mouse!
FWIW, Yahoo! Sports and Hokie Sports were where I saw the 2:30 PM tip-off and coverage on ESPN+.
So our bball teams are bad
We can only be excited for one sport at a time, that's the rule
No. Our bball teams, both men and women are NOT bad. There are over 350 D1 college basketball teams and I think both our men and women are comfortably in the top 100. (I do not know their actual raking). Will either team win the national championship this year? Probably not. Will they win the ACC championship? Doubtful. Will they face multiple challenges? Absolutely. That's why it is more important than ever to tune-in and cheer on your HOKIES! Can you be critical of a bad coaching decision? Yes. Can you be critical of a player not giving a 100%? Yes. But do not call our bball teams bad when that is clearly not the case. Now, we can revisit this comment at the end of the season and if our teams are below average in the country then I'll eat my words and apologize. But in the mean time... we do not have bad bball teams.
This!^^^^
These teams are building from rough seasons last year. Great additions, really good coaching, solid recruiting! They will benefit from the new Athletics push and budgets. Let's! Go! Hokies!!!
I 100% disagree with this. If both our bball teams had "really good coaching", they'd be playing at least their potential. The past few games, especially for the Lady Hokies, have been anything but. I will agree that we do have good coaches, but there is a lot of potential being wasted while other teams are reloading their benches with fewer on the court issues.
Now, I am not saying this to say abandon all hope, tune out, keep your wallets closed, etc. I just think it is viewing our current basketball situation through very O&M glasses to say we have really good coaching. Maybe things will turn around when we get to our "known opponents" in the conference schedule, but that is indicative of some sort of coaching problem: poor preparation, adjustments, scouting, etc.
Our teams are not bad...they are just playing badly at the moment. Just read back through the in-game threads...they are chock full of comments about how abysmal our shooting percentages, turnover rates, rebounding balances, etc are in the last few games.
EDIT: it hasn't helped that the Hokies have had to play against 3 extra
playerszebras most of the recent games, too.I don't disagree w u on the worse shooting % and changes the last few games, now that teams have some film. And we need to adapt to that. And Lawal is injured.. But, the Duffy history is short and building and, 1.5 yrs in, she's done a good job rebuilding from what Kenny Brooks left us.
And to say Mike Young isn't a good coach?... OK, u be u. I completely disagree. His history here is anything but under the circumstances he's had to deal with. Context matters bro!
So ur the down vote for my opinion, huh?
I never said anyone isn't a good coach. Please go re-read my post and quote me where I stated that. I was disagreeing on your statement that they are "really good coaches". Duffy IS rebuilding, but the on-court performances of late, in my opinion, are subpar to the talent of the players on the roster. That falls on the coaching, whether that's fair or not. And for CMY, I agree with a lot of the recent in-game posts that CMY's style of coaching and coaching decisions hurt us in certain situations. His coaching style calls for a square peg and he, for the most part, refuses to deviate from that. When our opponent dictates we need a round peg, he continues to try to make the square peg fit. If the players he has recruited can only play one style (his) of basketball, that's on him/them as recruiters. If they are capable of adapting to the opponent they are playing, but he refuses to do so, that is again on him as a coach. If he IS trying to adapt somehow, but the players are not executing that, then again, it's on him/them as coaches.
Also, no, I did not downvote your opinion. I don't downvote just because we have opposing opinions.
U and I are disagreeing on really minor differences. U basically have a problem with me adding "really" to good. Im glad u didnt down vote an opinion.
This latest tourney of 3 games isn't enuf of an indicator of "Mike Young's" inability to adapt. Lawal ended up a non contributor on short notice. He's a big part of the team. Yes, coaches need backup plans. Our depth is better but not huge. We'll see.
Correct.
I wouldn't call it an inability...more of a conscious decision not to. But the pattern extends over his career at VT. The first few years I thought it was CMY working with the best of what he could get post-Buzz, but I think it is clear he has his style and will stick to it. And I also think that makes VT MBB susceptible to being scouted pretty easily. We've got a lot of good players and size on this year's team, but I feel like we're still playing like a shorter, perimeter attacking team. The injuries to Neo and Lawal have definitely hurt, but the reasons why we have lost the last few games extend beyond that, IMO. Next Tuesday will be an interesting matchup to see how they rebound from the Bahamas trip and head to a hostile away environment.
Ok, its a nitpick. We agree to disagree. Have a great holiday.
Mens team had been receiving votes so about 40th but this trip will take those off the board. Prior to the loss today we were 27th in RPI.

Women's side doesn't appear RPI is active yet but Massey Ratings have them at 59th after yesterday.
