WBB vs Oregon State Paradise Jam 2:30 PM Nov 29

Limited time today. Have to go ring the bell for the Salvation Army. After losing a relatively close but not well-played game to BYU Thursday, the Hokies wrap up the Virgin Islands tour with 5-2 Oregon State. ESPN predictor favors us 70.5%. The game will be on the ESPN+ network.

The Beavers have 6'8" Nene Sow who will probably give us fits; she only plays 16 min/game but shoots 68%, does not attempt 3's and scores4.3 ppg and 6 rebounds. Even when she is not on the floor, they will still likely have the tallest player on the court with 6'" Alonso-Basurto or 6'5" Williamson.

The Beavers shoot 46.3% overall and 33.3% from three; they make 7+ 3's per game. #0 Bolden and #4 Schimel shoot 46.7% and 50% from beyond the arc. They win the rebound battle by 9; average 13.3 assist and 15.7 TO's per game.

Coach Duffy is going to have a challenge today. Taller post players under the basket and very good long range shooters out front. If the Ladies don't come out of their shooting slump, this could be a tough game.

LET'S GO HOKIES!

do you ever do similar stat breakdowns for our team? Nice to know who we're playing but seeing a recap of our teams stats / roster / numbers would nice now and then

I'll do that for the next game.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

Hokies have four starters in double-digits. Wenzel leads the team at 16.3 ppg. That said, her shooting is awful. She is shooting 37% from the floor and 30% from the perimeter. She also has 3.3 turnovers per game so quite a bit of subtraction by addition.

Unfortunately Carys Baker is right there with her shooting 38% from the floor and 31% from the perimeter. Freelon and Daley are the only players shooting better than 50% overall.

As a team the Hokies are shooting a woeful 41% from the floor and 27% from the perimeter.

They have an edge in rebounding overall but the last two games against better competition has shown rebounding is a weakness. A big part of that though is taking 20 shots per game from outside with only Freelon under the basket. Perimeter shots are almost a third of the Hokies total shots

They are turning the ball over at 14 per game and creating 20 per game but unlike rebounding the last three games were consistent here. Unfortunately they haven't capitalized on the extra possessions with poor shooting and few second chance opportunities. In the two losses the Hokies shot 33% and 35% overall. You aren't going to win many games shooting that poorly. One part of this is that the Hokies only appear to have two players that can drive the ball to the basket in Daley and Suffren.

One major concern is the lack of growth of Petersen from year to year and Baker being used much more on the perimeter offensively than in the paint. Baker was a big factor inside last season and her shooting was 10% better than this season. Her perimeter shooting is also down by over 10%. Freshman and Sophomore season she shot over 50% from inside and she is shooting 41% this season.

Scary part on Wenzel is her overall shooting of 37% is a 3% improvement over last season but her perimeter shooting has dropped by almost 4% from last year.

26-14 Hokies after 1st Quarter

Hokies shot 55% in the quarter

Got to the line by scoring in the paint.

Seeing alot of the negatives in my post above being reversed by focusing on the paint.

Not as good 2nd Quarter but still up 44-33. Daley with 18 points on 7 for 8 shooting.

Wenzel and Freelon again unstellar half.
Freelon was 1 for 4 and 2 turnovers but had 5 rebounds. Wenzel 2 for 6, 0 for 2 from 3 and 2 turnovers.

And Wenzel starts the 3rd with a missed wide open 3 and then a turnover

Hokies had stretched the lead to 19 but then let Oregon State close on a run. Hokies lead 62-40.

I am worried Petersen is suffering the sophomore slump.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Coming out in 4th letting Oregon State extend their run with multiple Hokies turnovers. Lead down to 6

Make that 3 point lead. Hokies were killing them inside but here in 4th its been all 3 point heaves.
