Fam!
But the game should have never been this close. This SC team... is not good. Still, better to beat a bad team instead of losing to one
Road SEC win fam! Might have been ugly but ball dont lie!
FAM!
Lot's to work on.
FAM!
Gamecock wife pissed, but Go Hokies!
My Gamecock wife is pissed to!
Go Hokies!
It's been a good day to be a Hokie 🦃
5 on 9 is more like it. The SC 5, the 3 ref's and our own selves. Regardless of the refs, we should have won by double digits and never been stressed. We, like so many times with CMY, won't put the dagger into a game when we certainly can/should.
EDIT: oh and FAM!!!
Updated OP with the highlights
Yay FAM!
Not to disagree with the "SC is a bottom feeding SEC team" but this still was a Q2 win.
Ben FAMmond coming in clutch in OT
More like 5 on 10.
Us vs SC+the refs+ESPN announcers
Those were SEC Network announcers. That's why they were insufferable.
Road Win FAM
Regardless of score, it was a big win. The ref's did just about everything they could to throw the game to SC while keeping their jobs. Our entire team was in foul trouble and they had basically none.
I had so little faith when I saw the refs ignore hacks by USC and call breathing to hard on all our top players. But we won in an exciting to watch game.
Intrepeter - appreciate you putting the clips - Great stuff!
Oh, and FAM!!!
So it wasn't just me, FAM!
Hansberry and Hammond had great games. Neo didn't impress in front of the scouts. His defense was weak tonight and he still looks shy going to the rim. I keep forgetting Dorn is a freshman, he looks older than 19, but holy cow does he miss a lot of buckets and rebounds for a guy his size. He's got lead hands and will be a force if he can improve his touch
I will counter with this is the most effective offensively we have seen Neo since game 2. 13 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists and he was getting in the paint working a 1-2 scheme with Hansberry all night. Several of Hansberry's easy buckets were because Neo drew two defenders to himself with the ball. Did make mistakes defensively but most complete game for him since Providence or St Joes game.
Yes, his court vision is impressive. Even more so when you see the other guards missing the cutters that would be dunks. For a guy his size though, he doesn't play through contact well or try to. I am not saying he needs to just put his head down and blindly take it to the rim, but I would like to see more attempts to finish at run than pull up his dribble 6ft away.
A couple aspects I think he is still adjusting to is the actual lane and the 3 point distance.
In Euro leagues they use the lane that has nearly twice the width of a college basketball floor. This forces defenders to move farther away from the hoop more frequently leaving more space in the paint to operate offensively. Neo coming from that background I believe is more uncomfortable with how packed in a college lane gets.
The 3 point line in Euro is two feet less than NCAA. 20 feet versus 22 feet. Thats a significant adjustment to make.
Did not know that. To me, this explains it. He will adjust, get more acquainted and improve. In theory.....yes.
I think this also impacts Dorn down low. He isn't used to having three bodies bumping him in the paint.
Dorn isn't 19. He is 22. Neo is 19.
So my eyes were right, he does look older than a typical freshman.
I liked what I saw from Dorn last night. I think if he got more playing time, he would improve. Same with Gurdack. We are lucky to have them both come off the bench for breathers and foul trouble and start when others are injured
Dorn wasnt as bad last night as his positioning to receive passes greatly improved although he got away with several chicken wing around the guy behind him. Still only gave us 8 points and 2 rebounds in 30 minutes. That is not very good on the boards for a 7 footer in a game that had 65 rebounds total.
His games against VCU and St Mary's were a different story. Had stone hands and very robot like body motion.
Give me more Gurdak all day.
I agree, Gurdak looks better when he is on the floor
Agreed, agreed.
he boxed out and let Hansberry go get the boards
A lot has been said above about Neo getting more assertive to the basket and his assists went way up showing he's adapting to what defenses are throwing at him. Good insight by Lt Rob on court differences he had to get used to.
A couple other observations:
1. Hammond saved our griskits and Neo loves him! They are great compliments to each other.
2. Team free throw shooting is gonna lose us some ACC games. That has to get better.
3. Our 3 point shooting needs to improve also. Schutt is streaky, so others need to hit a higher %age.
4. Schutt's touch driving the lane is impressive, I love him mixing that up. Maybe that helps give him get better 3 looks.
I know it never seems like it ( myself definitely) but they are shooting almost 71% from the line so far. They were 14/21 (67%) in the game against South Carolina.
I do think they tend to miss more of the critical ones at the end of the game with the result in question.
71% is the bottom of acceptable. To win 1 to 3 close games in the ACC we need to be 73 to 75% at least. Thats what I meant.
Ref FT %: Across all NCAA teams the average is 70 - 71%. Top teams are in the 73 - 78% range. Elite individual players can get to 90% and above.
Currently the St Louis Bilikens lead the country for '25 - '26 with an 82.3% team FT%. (only four other teams above 80%)
We def need to be in the upper end of that elite FT% bracket. Otherwise opponents will keep doing what they are doing...playing us physical because they know the refs will fuck us over by not calling most of the fouls, but when they do, we won't be clutch in making them. I remember a game against FSU where Leonard rotated like 45 bench players to foul us constantly, and they nearly came back to win the game because we missed a significant number of the FT shots.
