Among FBS programs Virginia Tech stands at 780 wins, good enough for 18th All-Time (26th if we count all NCAA levels).
It's well known that Frank Beamer is far and away our winningest coach, with 238 wins over his 29 seasons, 174 wins above #2 Bill Dooley.
James Franklin comes in tied for 38th among VT coaches (with Allan Learned) at 0.
18 coaches coached for one year or less (counting all interims). An additional 10 finished before their first cohort came through. Only 8 coached a minimum of half a decade. Only 3 made it a decade, with only Beamer staying on longer than 10 years.
Among first year Hokie coaches, Justin Fuente was the winningest with 10 wins, following this up by being the winningest through his first two years (19 wins), three years (25 wins), four years (33 wins), five years (38 wins), and six years (43 wins).
Ten coaches reached a minimum of 10 wins through their first two seasons, led by Fuente, and followed by BC Cubbage (15), Sally Miles (14), Charles Bernier (13), Branch Bocock, Henry Redd, and Jimmy Sharpe (12), and Andy Gustafson, Charlie Coffey, and Brent Pry (10).
Considering 6 wins is bowl eligibility, these next sets will only be those who averaged bowl eligibility.
Through their first three years, only four Hokie coaches would average bowl eligibility, led by Fuente, and followed by Cubbage (21 wins), and Bernier and Sharpe (18).
Through their first four years, four will again average bowl eligibility, again led by Fuente, followed by Cubbage and Bill Dooley (25), and Bocock (24)
Surprisingly, five coaches averaged bowl eligibility through their first five seasons, again led by Fuente, followed by Dooley (31 wins), and Claiborne, Bocock, and Cubbage (30).
Should we keep Franklin around for the duration of his initial contract and extend him in to a second contract, the chance to climb higher will happen at a faster rate.
As said above, Fuente is the winningest coach through 6 years, but only Dooley (40) and Claiborne (38) also averaged bowl eligibility.
Fuente being fired after 6 years, meant that only Dooley (49) and Claiborne (45) averaged bowl eligibility, maintaining that through year 8 (55 and 52 wins, respectively), and year 9 (64 and 56 wins respectively).
Once we get to a full decade of coaching, only 3 names are on the list, of which only 2 averaged bowl eligibility, and they both were tied at 61 wins: Claiborne and Beamer.
It's very obvious that Beamer never would have survived in the modern landscape of VT football that he created. He had the fewest wins among all Tech coaches through year 3 (11), year 4 (17) year 5 (22), year 6 (24), and year 7 (33). It took until year 8 (41 wins) to pass another coach (Redd, 38). In year 9 (51 wins), he passed Moseley (48), before tying Claiborne in year 10. Beginning with year 11, Beamer never averaged lower than bowl eligibility.
Looking at the most conference wins list, Franklin comes in tied for 21st (again Allan Learned). A 4-4 conference season next year would see him shoot up to a tie for 13th. An improbable perfect conference slate would put him alone at 10th with 8 or 9 wins, with a good chance to move into the top 5 in 2027 and 2028.
Considering 4 wins is the standard for a .500 conference slate, the Hokies have 5 coaches average that through their careers, led by Beamer with 124 over 25 seasons. Fuente was 2nd with 28 over 6 seasons. Claiborne is 3rd with 12 SOCON wins over 3 years. Summer Tilson might be 4th with 5 wins in 1 season. Jack Ingersell is 5th with 4 South Atlantic Conference wins in 1 season.
If Franklin is as good as we think he is, he can do a lot of damage to the Wins list very quickly, especially damaging the conference wins list.

Nice data gathering. Thank you.
How many of these coaches/years only had 7/8 games though to effect "Bowl Eligibility" results?
W% wise Jones, Massie, Firth, Morrison, Lueder, Miles, Williams, Reiss, Ingersoll, Bocock, Bernier, Cubbage, Tilson all had 68% or higher win%.
746-504-44 overall. 57%
238-121-2 66%
385-266-42 w/o Frank. 55.5%
I need a chart ha

For whatever reason, it won't include Fuente and Price when you sort by wins
Fuente deserves some credit, but it certainly seems like he coasted on Beamer's guys and Bud helped keep the ship afloat.
hard to feel anything besides this way considering he had a pretty downward trend with every passing year and was especially disappointing after Bud retired. and he hasn't sniffed a football since we fired him
But JMFF is currently the only undefeated coach in VT history!
Purely from a wins standpoint, it appears that CJF is a good moniker to have.
UVA fans claim he is 0-2 and would die on that hill
I figure most of them don't even bother to show up to that hill.
