Another Hokie becoming a Tight End in the Pros?

Appears D.J. Coles had a workout with the Patriots to look at him for possibly becoming a tight end. Couldn't help but laugh.

he basically was an H back for us the last year..

D.J. coles would be a great WR/TE combo. New England would get a 2 for 1 end-zone threat.

If a WR can become a TE, why can't a QB?!????!??!?!!!111!1!?LOL

^ that was sarcasm

TEU baby! wait...

haha..I actually laughed at this.

This actually isn't a bad idea. Didn't DJ Coles have injury issues? But he was big, strong, and could go up for a ball.

Hope he does well.

My only worry is that last year he looked so tentative working the middle after his injury. As a TE, especially a NE TE he would have to work the middle a LOT.

Those professional checks go a long way towards building confidence.

Since this is a TE thread, quick question about LT:

I had not been paying attention to his draft stock so I was very surprised to see every google search I did a few days ago projected him as a 7th round or FA guy. Wouldn't he be drafted much higher as a TE? Like 2nd or 3rd round?

No. He has no experience playing TE.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

Agree that he won't be a 2nd or 3rd round pick -- I'm not even willing to venture he'll get drafted. But I thought before he blew out his knee that he had the most upside of the receivers on that team -- which included Coale and Boykin. Good size, good hands, athletic, okay speed (before he put on weight), and good blocking ability.

If he can get over his injury (and that's a BIG if), I think he could have value for a team. He's a little small for a tight end and a little slow for a WR, but can block in space and can catch in space and could make for a nice H back -- and if need be could line up as a TE or a WR.

I believe the poster you replied to was talking about Logan Thomas and you are talking about DJ Coles.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I do believe you are correct, sir. A big "duh" for me. But my thoughts on Coles still stand.

Wouldn't he be drafted much higher as a TE? Like 2nd or 3rd round?

Hell no.

He'll get drafted as a QB (probably 3rd, 2nd is possible, 4th is the latest I think), and he'll make way more money as a QB (even if he's just a backup) than he'll ever make as a tight end. And he'll have a longer career.

In fairness, Jimmy Graham will make WAY more money as a TE than as a QB... I don't think anyone could agree he would be even a decent quarterback... Just saying...

Jimmy Graham actually gets hurt by being classified as solely a TE. He is working through the paperwork now to challenge that designation because of the $5 million it cost him in terms of being Franchised Tagged as a TE compared to a WR. Considering Graham was 15th in the NFL in receiving last year I can understand him wanting his Franchise Tag to pay like a #1 WR.

Yeah, I was just being douchy for the sake of douchiness. The lack of douchinating my douchy remark probably allowed the douchable comment to seem unlike that of a douche. I apologize.

And that said, yeah: he is sorta getting screwed on the "he's a tight end" position salary clause... How douchy of the Saints (see what I did there? Brought the joke back in to the conversation: double word score!)

"...sticks and stones may break my bones but I'm gonna kick you repeatedly in the balls Gardoki!"

I am not sure I can ever muster sympathy for a player making 8 million a year instead of 11 million. That is more money in one year than I am likely to make in a lifetime of being a licensed engineer.

I know where you are coming from but I am not a fan of the Franchise Tag in the first place and to see it doubled down in effect really doesn't sit well with me.

The problem I have more than anything is that they are preventing him from pursuing his true value on the open market, which you as an Engineer are free to do. I have less of a problem with the transition tag, where a team can match but even that still sits badly with me, because if you are stuck on a really awful team (see the Cleveland Browns and Alex Mack) you have no recourse to get out until they have used one of the tags on you three years in a row or until your next contract that they matched is up and then they will still have the option of Franchising/Transition you again.

This can be about legacy and the chance to make the Hall of Fame, lose three to five years of your career on a terrible team and you will always be remembered in the second tier of players (ask Dan Marino). And lets face it, its no fun losing all the time, no matter if you are doing it for free or making $20 mil a season. Is it easier to swallow at $20 mil a season? Sure but it doesn't get you back the chance to play for a winner and possibly get Super Bowl rings etc. and in football, very few single players can change a team from loser to winner by themselves.

I do love what Alex Mack did in the contract he signed with Jacksonville that Cleveland matched. Knowing that it was a good chance Cleveland would match, he put in clauses that at the end of three years the team is not allowed to use the Franchise or Transition tag on him, there is a no trade clause provision and there is also the right to void the final three years of the five year contract at the players discretion. Essentially he inked a big financial deal and guaranteed in two years he will be a free man if the Cleveland Browns are still terrible. And as a center he will still be making almost $2mil a season more than Jimmy Graham stuck with the Franchise Tag as he is getting $9 mil a year while Graham gets $7 and the WR Franchise gets $12.3

Well, unless there's some hidden info somewhere, Jimmy Graham has never played QB in his life. Likely at any level.

Much like Logan Thomas has never played TE in his life. At any level.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

*but there was that one play where he caught a TD pass!!!*

So did Marcus Vick.

But then Vick (don't recall just how brief) was a WR with the Dolphins...

Go get some LT3!!!! I can't wait to see him play on Sundays.

@AMB4VT

Wait wait wait...what the hell is wrong with Tyrod?!?!?!

Ravens fans are very spoiled. Don't worry about what they say.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

He is going to cost money to keep (rookie contract ends) and no one knows what he can do because JF is so durable. He has never been showcased. Only QB get to stick around 3 years and hold clipboards. Tyrod may be in Canada before he ever sees another NFL chance.

A couple things:
1. Obligatory DJ Coles to QB comment...rubble rubble rubble
2. LT would be very lucky to get drafted by a team like the Pats. Learning behind Brady for a couple years would be amazing for him

What are the chances that he goes to Houston as a FA? They like VT players, and Bill OBrien is a heck of a QB coach - I mean, look with what he did with Matt McGloin - a walkon turned NFL starter (for a few games).

DJ? Has a chance as a FA to go to Houston. LT will be drafted.

I wonder if Loefler has worked the Brady connection any to help get Logan's foot in the door with New England?

Good for DJ on being willing to explore all options and I hope he makes it, but I'll be shocked if he sticks in the league. Injuries seemed to sap a good portion of his explosiveness.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Just FYI - Coles ran a low 4.4 forty during his pro day evaluation. It appears that his knee has finally heeled.

That kind of speed at his size will generate solid pro interest, maybe enough to get drafted.

Wow, didn't think he was that fast!

well...If I'm not mistaken, pro days occur at the school from which the player comes..in this case, Virginia Tech. And, also if I'm not mistaken, Virginia Tech is, for lack of a better term, notorious for posting unrealistically low 40 times.

wow that's a lotta commas...but you get the idea.

I don't know if he's physical enough to be a TE, just from a mental standpoint.

They may use him more like a Jimmy Graham kind of guy. Bellichek will also use him in that H back type role to create mismatches. I don't like the guy but he is a smart dude.

A certain UVA linebacker by the name of Greer has no such uncertainties.

Counter argument:

I say good for him. I think he'd work out well at that position and if it gets him into the NFL then i'm sure he'd be all about it.
