Definitely well deserved. One of the greatest college players I ever saw. If he had stayed a couple more years, just think of the numbers he would have racked up. And, let's face it, he was a phenomenal talent surrounded by good-to-very good players. If he was on a team with elite top 10 talent around him, good lord, what numbers he could have put up.
If he'd stayed maybe he wins a heisman, and maybe we win a natty. Maybe he gets hurt and becomes a massive what if?
As fun as it is to think about what could've been if he'd stayed longer, I can't help but get a bit frustrated that we couldn't use the moment we got from Vick to get a better replacement when he left than Grant Noels.
Changed the way QB is played. Others had come before, but the success Vick had validated the running mobile QB as real offensive weapon. Today's game wouldn't be the same without him.
This is my take as well. Yes, Vick was an incredible player. But more importantly, he was truly the first of his kind.
We ascribe the label "generational" to players once every five years it seems. But players who change how the game is played for future generations... that's the true meaning of a generational player imo
For better or worse, MV7 is the reason I became a football fan at age 8 in the fall of '99. Congrats to him.
Not sure how they managed to get his helmet and jersey wrong for the main graphic. It would've been more work to photoshop the wrong jersey sleeve numbers and the wrong helmet than just use a photo of him.
AI slop
The guy was a phenomenal QB. He certainly changed VT football, and football in general.
Congrats to M Vick!
Well deserved. Congratulations to MV7!
I was privileged enough to be in school in the fall of '99 and see him play. I used to tell people it was like watching Michael Jordan take over a basketball game. The all around athleticism, explosiveness, and arm haven't been matched since, IMO.
You know what story was incredible to me on him. It didnt even happen on the field. It happened on a basketball court in Nashville. Team was forced indoors because of weather before the Music City Bowl. His teammates I had classes with in the spring told me at one point during that practice Vick went to midcourt and threw the football clean swish into the basket left handed. Then he went to full court and threw right handed and another swish. Most people dont know that Vick is essentially ambidextrous. He writes right handed but throws left handed because he was able to generate more power with his left arm.
To me, the only one close has been Lamar.
Completely Deserved. Was one of the greatest first games I ever saw a VT player have during JMU. Knew he was special that day. Thought we broke him on that twisted ankle play.
Frank's integrity and promise to Vick's HS coach kept us from seeing him on the field his freshman year. I've wondered how that would have played out. It was fun to watch him, and I was able to do so, from his first spring game to the Sugar Bowl and the ending. It was a privilege to have had him as a Hokie. I had thought that Bruce Smith was my all time Hokie football player, but Michael took the cake, for sure. Close, though.
I am still offended on his behalf that the only reason he didn't win the Heisman was the committee admitting they would not give it to a freshman. Then they reversed that decision several years later.
And gave it to Tim Tebow π
Tebow didn't win the Heisman his freshman year. Johnny Manziel was the first. So yea, not any better.
Eh Manziel was dragging that team to wins with some incredible plays. It did help to have some freaks at WR, but Vick also benefitted from being able to throw it to a WR that could outrun the CB.
Manziel was throwing to Mike Evans I believe. Evans is one of the best at bailing out a QB. Been doing it his whole career.
He was, but watch some of those highlights if you haven't recently. He was one slippery motherfucker on the field. Seemed like he couldn't be tackled at times kinda like MV7. Playing a different speed than everyone else.
MV7 also was throwing to Andre Davis who could run by everyone.
He was the first underclassman. I get both him and Johnny mixed up there.
Best player to never win the Heisman
