Didn't see a thread for the game so thought I'd get one up since tip is in 15 mins.
No preview from me cause I'm on mobile other than Lawal will play (thank god) and Johnson and Dorn still out.
Think I saw a spread the other day with Hokies -4.5. IMO if we play our game and don't turn the damn ball over the way we did against Wake and limit offensive rebounds, I like our chances.
Lawal should help with the latter.
Go Hokies!

Let's Go
Hokies
TOBI
Lawal not starting.
Hansberry, Avdalas, Bedford, Gurdack, and Schutt starting.
And Lawal is on the court and scores
Jesus how are the ACC ads so bad?
Thanks got swamped today.
Christ more clock problems. Thanks Whit.
Very embarrassing. Can't believe we haven't fixed this after the terrible issues during last week's game.
Wouldn't mind a patented Lawal alley oop to start 2H and get some juice going. Game feels a little lifeless. Haven't been mad at our D and Neo seems to playing within himself which is nice
Boeheim is so hard to listen to. Glad he doesn't call many of our games.
But still better than him coaching against us.
Another clock issue
This team has no idea how to play with a lead
Seriously. Two straight dumb possessions and then an even dumber save under the hoop to give Stanford a wide open 3 after Lawal's block.
Geesh. We cannot put this away. Another 11-12 point lead down to 1-2 possessions.
Why are we not running clock and shooting 3s early in the shot clock? Dumb
Boeheim saying the same thing.
We play too loose with a lead
We deserve to lose this game after the way we've gift wrapped these last two minutes. Classic Chokies.
13 point lead with like 3 minutes to go. What a colossal fuck up
Glad my kids school's wifi wont let me watch. Bad enough watching ESPN ticker waste away the lead
You just can't make this shit up
N--I--T
Haha I can't believe we lost this game. Horrible choke
Massive fucking choke job. Some of the most braindead basketball I've ever watched a team play down the stretch.
Avdalas has to contest that better. Give up the two and go to OT if you have too
Neo is a lazy defender. He has stretches when he'll play hard but overall he's a lazy defender.
Unfortunately that's a product of Europe. Conditioned to sag off rather than be physical because most times in Europe if you have a hand or forearm on someone its a foul. He isn't great either way but hard to break that habit quickly
Inexcusable. Wtf was that
Free throws and some horrendous possessions to finish a good game. Ugly ugly loss at home
Avdalas' terrible last 2 minutes cost us this game.
Everyone hating on my post about how CMY teams slide into oblivion for long stretches of the ACC season and here we are... at the beginning of one of those classic CMY slides. He will have these guys competing late in the season, but this cycle is getting old.
My apologies. I turned on the game to see us blow the 11 point lead.
Avdalas with another shitty play.
What a choke job
What the hell was that? Terrible effort and coaching down the stretch
Mike Young is a great guy, but he has way too many games where his team acts like they've never played basketball before.
Up 13 with that little time left, the game is literally just a math problem.
Beat the press, don't shoot until under 5, make some of your free throws, force the other team to take 10+ seconds or do a bad shot.
Meanwhile VT decided to play like recess was almost over.
Exactly. You have to make the wrong decision repeatedly for three straight minutes to lose in this situation. Kudos to Stanford for going nuclear down the stretch, but with good coaching from CMY, they never get that opportunity.
Yep this. No shot should have come with more than 6 seconds on shot clock outside a gimme layup. They have to get the ball in Hammonds hands when its free throw times and too often they left it with Neo. Utterly embarrassing reading play by play on ESPN
That was like 7 secs...
Insult to injury...
CMY has to answer for this disaster
What an awful attempt of a final play this team knows how to choke like a well I shouldn't really say
What a pathetic loss. Give the game away and then totally give up at the end.
This is bad coaching. Blowing a 13 point lead with 3:30 to go is on the coach. Terrible possessions with little no set run just guys vibing.
Awful
Neo. You are not a first rounder. You make way too many mistakes
I see Neo neither in the NBA nor Blacksburg next year.
He looked like a lottery pick for 3 games, then fell off a cliff since Charlotte game
He was playing pretty well until the final two minutes. It's like he thought that he needed to show off in the final two minutes rather than protect the lead. But he did neither
I was sitting 2 rows back and you could see him turn it on and try way too hard in the last 3 minutes. This loss is solely on him. If he's on the bench for that stretch, we win easy.
Yeah I thought he actually played a really nice game, played within himself, only a few dumb shots, made the right reads, etc.
And then the final 3 minutes happened
Its the Mr Incredible meme. The first 37 minutes from Neo. Is happy Mr Incredible. And the final three minutes. Is the traumatized Mr Incredible.
Hopefully he gets drafted and helps our recruiting. But I am sick of watching him play. We're a better team when he's not on the floor.
Mike Young seems like a great dude, but I think I've seen enough.
98% Win Probability with just more than 2 minutes left.
That's some Justin Fuente shit. You have to try to lose a game like that.
Last year he got a pass-- nobody could have won with that roster, but if this team continues underwhelm, I agree it's time to start looking for other options.
The long stretches of offensive ineptitude have been a consistent theme for years now
We're in year 7. We're gonna miss the tourney again. 2/7 isn't good enough.
Yep...and that 2022 team largely underachieved and probably doesn't make the Tourney without winning the ACC Tourney.
Otherwise its 1/7....
I was excited to go too the Cal game Saturday. But I'm not sure i want to go anymore
Man, CMY better own up in the press conference
Just finished. What a complete and utter fucking bullshit loss. We blew two 12 point leads. We let up both times and shit the bed. We missed too many FT's. That alone, even with the two 12 point leads blown would have won the game.
The announcers were stunned. Well join the fucking club. No excuse for not pulling away. We are infamous for building up a lead and then stop playing.
A totally inexcusable loss. I mean WT Actual Fuck.
Actually shot 75% from the line but understand the thought. Missed them when it mattered.
Came in with a 30% chance to make the NCAA Tournament per T-Rank... with that loss it's down to 12%.
Brutal. Potentially season-changing loss.
I can't believe we lost that fucking game. I literally can't believe we lost that fucking game.
Choke city folks!
So I think it is pretty clear that Neo has a lot of maturing to do and isn't ready for prime time end of game situations. He is way too turnover prone. Hammonds however is what you want to see from your PG in clutch spots. The question I want to ask here is whether or not CMY has the sack to start (and finish) with Hammonds at PG and let Neo come off the bench as a sixth man until he matures. Make a statement to this team that nobody is untouchable.
I agree with you and believe Hammond needs the ball in crunch time to initiate, but for the majority of the year they've both been in together at the end of games. Hammond almost always finishes. I actually prefer Neo working off the ball and exploiting mismatches while Hammond gets the offense going.
If Neo off the floor in spots helps us secure the W, then go for it. The real question is what CMY said to Neo after he jacked up that contested 3 with 20 some seconds left on the shot clock, and if Neo understood, digested, and will start making the right damn plays when it's most important.
Couldn't agree with you more. Looking at Hammond's stats the last four games shows he's consistent. You want him leading the O in crunch time for sure. Look at his FT%. With the copious amount of minutes in double bonus, Hammond should have been the offensive focus. He should get more time running our O when Neo is on the floor. If Hammond gets into foul trouble, Bedford can back him up and Neo can shift to PG as well.
But, I have to say it again, I still can't believe we lost that game
Losing like this hurts so much more than losing by 20. Just inexcusable
GM and exactly. So, I slept on it and I'm still asking the same question...how did we lose that f-ing game?
Honestly in closing out I would prefer we have Pasha, Bedford and Hammond on floor with Lawal and Hansberry. Sit Schutt and Avdalas. Only reason to maybe have Schutt is free throws as he is #2 on team. Those are the best ball handlers on our roster that can drive to the rim. Create contact but possibly score too. Hammond is shooting 84% from the line. He is 6% better than Schutt and 10% better than Lawal. Those are the only three shooting better than 70%.
Totally forgot to mention Pasha. Great point. Hammond's FT% is masterclass.
Avdalas has done the exact same thing in multiple games now. Step back 3s and faders. It was especially brutal to watch last night with the lack of defensive effort on one end and then the lack of clock control and shooting contested jumpers while the other team is in the Bonus+ on the other. Every offensive possession should have been using as much clock as possible and then attacking the rim. You need to be looking for contact because it guarantees two foul shots no matter what. Attack the rim and you either get fouled on the way in (go to the line for two), fouled while taking the shot (go to the line for two or the and one). And if neither of those happen you ate up half a minute off the clock and they have to move the ball the full length of the court to get into their offense. It appears this team lacks discipline and basketball IQ at the most basic levels, which is squarely on MY's shoulders.
All while Franklin had four recruits with him sitting behind the scoring table.
No worries, my buddy and I sat behind them, their parents, and Coach Franklin and Pry. We chatted them up pretty good and two of them were even "gifted" Smithfield bacon sweat pants by the nice cheerleaders during the Bacon Toss. So, I'm sure they'll commit any minute now.
Sounds like a recruiting violation if I've ever heard of one
It was funny though, they unravelled them from the rubber bands and held them up like "wtf is this" so we had to tell em, "It's bacon!"
It was Kamauryn Morgan. A 4 star edge rusher from Baylor. Another one with multiple years of eligibility.
That was just horrendous. There's really not much more to say
Yeah, too many games like this in the CMY era. Though this one was worse than several
His teams tend to play real stupid in wins, too.
The recent UVa game, we had multiple times where they just did something completely braindead to keep the Hoos in it. You have to have the little things cleaned up in the ACC and we consistently don't.
This is where I'm at. We seem to have better players, but the same team. The same issues show up year after year regardless of talent level. At some point, you have to look at the common denominator. I'm not advocating for him to go, but there's clearly something the players either aren't getting or aren't responding to.
With everything we have going in football right now we might just have to live with CMY for a bit until we start reaping the benefits of that investment, at which point we can dump some more money into basketball as well
This^^^^
In JMFF We Trust. If he does what many think he is going to do, over time, we should be able to invest more NIL to capture greater talent and then look to upgrade our coaching staff. CMY, appears in many ways to be a great guy, a decent coach, but is not going to bring VT BB to the level we would like to see - a consistent upper echelon ACC team who consistently makes MM.
Whether or not Neo is at VT next year, what I have seen this season so far, leads me to believe he will still be playing college ball, not jumping to the NBA
Agreed. His game is definitely not NBA ready at this point. He has to be able to overcome the mentality about being physical in the paint on both ends or he wont make it in the NBA. I can understand why its difficult because it basically goes against everything he has been coached all his life.
I dont understand Mike Young relying on him in those situations though. To me its more a coach issue than player issue. Hammond has shown he is fearless in the paint. Bedford has as well and even Pasha is better in thst regard. Would rather of had that trio to close out the game rather than Neo and Schutt.
Running the shot clock down to 5-7 seconds and attacking the rim was a guaranteed victory and we didn't do any of that. That is a coaching issue.
Yeah Said the same thing on Titter last night.
Football has RUN THE DAMN BALL
Basketball last night only had to
HOLD THE DAMN BALL. We could have taken two shot clock violations in final three minutes and we win. Instead we got shots with 21 and 19 seconds remaining on shot clocks. You dont do that unless they its a gimme layup.
100% agreed. The only shots taken with more than 5s on the shot clocks should be wide open dunks or layups. Other than that you eat the clock and go back and setup on D. Not jack up junk and then get beat on the other end multiple times as well. And if someone is to tired to attack the basket and get back on D then get them the heck off the court.
If you are going to jack up junk...put it ten rows into the seats so you are set on defense by the time the ball is inbounded
