For anyone that hasn't followed how the playoff system will exactly work, this is a really good guide.

This seems like an appropriate place for this
"Coach there's going to be girls at this party, think we should talk to them about the playoffs?"
I can't help but think of that commercial when I see this.
LET ME THINK...

Is the Peach Bowl really the Atlanta Bowl now?
I wonder if that is PC(not explaining here), or maybe they are just avoiding branding for the purpose of the playoff. A google search for "atlanta bowl" just returns the Chick-fil-a-Bowl . com site, with a big banner saying "We're In - Chick Fil A Bowl Selected for CFB playoff". Didn't see any mention of a name change on my brief Blackberry perusal of the site.
Yeah. Last time I checked, the Sugar Bowl was becoming the Champions Bowl with the Big 12 and the SEC. Did this ever happen? Sugar Bowl is still listed on the playoff page.
I think that was a new bowl that would take the top available non-BCS teams from each conference.
Is there another team that plays in the rose bowl if it's a semi final game? So you have two teams that can win the rose bowl, and then 2 other teams that use it as a semi-final?
Incorrect.
In years when the rose bowl does not host a semifinal, the rose bowl will host the top PAC12 and B10 teams that are NOT selected for a playoff bid.
In years when the rose bowl does host a semifinal, the selection committee will decide who plays there (although I'm sure they'll give into political pressures and place the B10 vs P12 champ in the rose bowl, regardless of ranking, but I digress).
Those two teams aren't necessarily going to be in the semifinals most seasons and the new playoff system is automatically 1 v 4 and 2 v 3. Look at this year, if the final four BCS teams had been the "playoff teams", then you would not have had a P12 team to choose from. Two SEC, one ACC, and one B10. You would have had Florida State playing Michigan State and Auburn playing Alabama. Out years will be pretty much like the BCS was selection wise though.
Now take into account the selection committee for this new round of nonsense has a strong P12 lean for now with Tyrone Willingham (Coached at two P12 schools, current volunteer Golf coach at Stanford), Condoleeza Rice(Stanford Alum), Pat Haden(USC AD) and Tom Jernstedt (Oregon Alum). Oliver Luck is also Andrew Lucks father and a WVU alum so ties to the P12 and B12.
One other member that I am curious to see if he keeps his seat is Steve Wieberg, since he has now left USA Today and is a high school English teacher. He is a Missouri Alum.
The only ACC rep on there is the Clemson AD, Dan Radakovich
My comment was meant to take a shot at the selection team. I personally believe we'll see biased/political pressure encouraging certain teams and match ups. I expect that anytime the B10 champ and P12 champ are in the top 5, and the rose bowl is hosting a semi, we'll see that matchup, regardless of ranking.
Disclaimer - I'm typically in favor of eliminating the human element as much as possible.
I was just looking at the conference ties of the selection committee. Thanks for doing the hard work.
Not only is Dan Radakovich the only ACC representative, they included Mike Tranghese who was the commisioner of the Big East when the ACC poached VT, Miami, and BC in 2004-2005. Cannot imagine he would hold a grudge against that conference or those schools *sarcasm*. It doesn't look good for the ACC in terms influence.
Also, as usual, Notre Dame is pretty well represented with Willingham being a former coach and Rice getting her Master's Degree there.
Willingham also graduated from and was an assistant coach at Michigan State. Add in Barry Alvarez and Tom Osbourne and the Big Then is well represented with three potential cheerleaders in the room.
With five remaining power conferences, how hard would it be to get two people with ties to each conference and then add three more people with Independent or lower tier conference ties or even someone with no ties at all?
Well, the SEC has three ties as well with Jeff Long (Arkansas), Archie Manning (Ole Miss) and Steve Wieberg (Missouri)
The ACC does have a history with Jeff Long though (Masters at Miami, worked as administrator at Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech, and as football staff at Duke and NC State) (Also was an administrator at Michigan and Oklahoma) He is married to a lady from Ann Arbor and he is from Ohio as well.
As for the "independent or lesser conferences" Jeff Long also worked at Rice, General Gould is at the Air Force Academy (also did a military specialty program at Harvard),
Oliver Luck has the double tie to the B12, as he also holds a J.D. from Texas.
Notre Dame also gets another nudge as Alvarez was there as a Linebackers coach and Defensive Coordinator. He also worked at Iowa.
I still wonder how Mike Tranghese ended up on the committee. Does he have any other experience outside of watching the Big East fall apart.
Condoleezza Rice doesn't have any football experience either.
She does fancy herself a football expert though. She has stated that being Commissioner of the NFL is her dream job.

But unlike Tranghese, she does not have a possible anti-ACC bias.
(Evil lead in Music) That we know of. She did spend a lot of years in Washington so there is a good chance someone she might want to spite went to an ACC school. (dun dun dun.....)
Please don't mention that name again while I am eating. I just vomited in my mouth.
Why does the selection committee rank the top 25 teams? If the top 4 are the only ones that matter then the rest just seems like a waste of time.
The rankings play into most of the other bowl agreements that teams have with bowls so have a standardized 25 is important from that aspect. The other aspect is if they didn't rank the 25, what would people have to argue about each week at the water cooler?

FINALLY, NYE, AND NEW YEARS DAY ARE BIG TIME BOWL GAME DAYS AGAIN
Keep in mind that in the past, slots in major bowls were earned, not selected. VT was a huge beneficiary of this practice. I'm not going to say that VT will be totally screwed by the new format, but let's say I'm pretty sure this committee has bigger plans for the pairings that don't reflect 'fairness.'
I wish they had just used the BCS rankings, and just renamed it, and used that to pick the top 4... the only year I can think of that anyone outside the top 4 had any sort of legitimate gripe of being left out of the playoff would have been the year there were 5 unbeaten teams after the regular season
I wish the National Championship was going to be on a Saturday night... any reason why they couldn't make that happen?
Monday night is a bigger draw than a Saturday night. Most people are doing something else on a Saturday night. Also, the NFL playoffs are on Saturday that weekend.
Yea, I wasn't sure if that was running into the NFL timing for Saturday Playoff games. Thanks!
I wish the Superbowl was on a Saturday night as well.
I wish our games were on Saturday night as well.
Much wisdom, such football, better fans furry mind
Yes, same here - or if America just shut down for the sake of everyone's hangover and made the Monday a National Holiday.
