On the Road in the Dome
Hokies got back in the win column, beating the Crying Irish 89-76. Now they go on the road to a Hokies Dome of Horrors. Virginia Tech is 2-9 all time at Syracuse. That said, this is a team the Hokies should beat despite what Vegas and ESPN Analytics think.
The Orange are 12-6 and 3-2 in ACC play. They have basically faced the bottom of the conference with wins over GT, FSU, and Pitt. In their last game they went to the other ACC morgue, to lose to Boston College in OT. Thats four of the bottom six ACC teams. The other ACC loss was to Clemson. Their four OOC losses were to Hofstra, Houston, Kansas and Iowa State. Thats three ranked Quad 1 games so hard to judge them losing there. The best win this season was upsetting #13 Tennessee in the ACC/SEC Challenge.
Head Coach for the Orange is Adrian Autry, a Syracuse, '94 alum in his 3rd season.
His overall record is 46-37.
JJ Starling has clearly been Syracuse's most important player. He is clutch at creating his own shot, dribble penetration, and late-clock scoring. He is their primary ball handler. When he's efficient, Syracuse's offense functions; when he's bottled up, the offense often stalls. He struggles against physical defense, especially trying to get around post players.
Donnie Freeman, #8 player in Class of 2024, Forward, has been a revelation for Syracuse, putting up 20 points and 7 rebounds a game.
Guards Nate Kingz and Nathan George round out the primary scorers for Syracuse. Forwards William Kyle and Kiyan Anthony(son of Carmelo) both provide just under 10 points per game but Kyle also is a key rebounder.
Autry does not go deep in his bench, relying on an eight man rotation so foul trouble can really disrupt the Orange game plan. Freeman is the most likely of the starters to get in trouble, averaging almost 3 fouls per game.
Defensively, the 2-3 zone is the foundation, but Autry has introduced more man-to-man possessions, multiple zone looks within the same game, greater flexibility in matchups and coverage. He expects his wings to take away rhythm threes and his bigs to protect the middle and the rim, which they excel at, as they are 2nd in the nation in blocks at 6.6 per game.
The zone still incorporates aggressive closeouts that dare teams to make extra passes but compared to Boeheim they use less extreme extension on the perimeter and more emphasis on containment than chaos. We will see fewer "run-and-jump" gambles from the wings as Autry has tried to tone done aggression versus controlled defense.
Autry is far more willing than Boeheim to play man-to-man, especially after timeouts, against elite shooting teams and late in halves to prevent runs. The man defense is relatively straightforward with switch-heavy focus on the perimeter, conservative ball-screen coverage and designed to complement the zone rather than replace it.
Defensive Takeaways
Zone remains the backbone
Defensive rebounding still an issue
Effort and connectivity are generally solid
Man-to-man defense is improving but inconsistent
Under Adrian Autry, Syracuse's offense has moved away from the rigid, motion-light Boeheim model toward a more modern, flexible, guard-centric system.
The emphasis is on multiple ball handlers that create advantages off the dribble.
A focus is playing with better spacing and optionality while still being capable of pushing in transition.
Autry prefers a moderate pace so expect to see them run off misses and turnovers but pull the ball out if the early advantage isn't there. They flow quickly into half-court actions to avoid the "quick shot or bust" feel of some Boeheim-era offenses while still leveraging athletic guards.
Ball screens are now central to the offense and feature high pick-and-rolls to force switches, spread-floor alignments with four shooters or dunker-spot spacing and the guards are empowered to score or pass, not just initiate. Autry asks his bigs to set solid screens, roll hard or pop selectively and create vertical spacing more than post dominance. This is a major philosophical shift from Syracuse's historical avoidance of heavy ball-screen usage.
Autry emphasizes a modern shot diet of
Catch-and-shoot threes, drives to the rim and getting to the line.
They are pretty poor shooting threes and free throws. They hit 33.2% (233rd) and 62.8% (363rd) overall. They stay in games by shooting 55% inside and taking almost 63% of shots inside.
Syracuse does have a bigger, more physical lineup so that will be something to watch.
Only player on Syracuse injury report is a freshman that has not played this season.
Offensive Takeaways
Strong guard-driven scoring
Heavy reliance on individual creation
Shooting inconsistency limits spacing
Offense struggles against physical, switching teams

Tyler Johnson remains out but Coach Young indicated he is nearing a return in an interview this week.
The Hokies need to maintain their high intensity man-to-man as that's been Syracuse Kryptonite this season. Their loss at BC was all about poor shooting due to aggressive defense. It was their worst inside perimeter effort on the season.
As an indicator on how reliant they are on the starting five, in the loss at BC, the bench scored TWO points and only took six shots in an 81-73 OT loss. Force them to use their bench and its game over.
One thing to watch is how well the Hokies adjust to facing a consistent zone defense. The best way to beat it is getting transition baskets. Otherwise, the Hokies need a good 1-2 lane passing game between the bigs to adjust against a good blocking team.
Hokies will need to be crisp on the perimeter if they are going to get open looks. Syracuse is holding ACC opponents to 29% perimeter shooting.
Final result comes down to the defensive side of the ball for both teams. Both are capable of 100 point runs so whichever team is more consistent defensively wins tonight.

Let's Gooooooooooo!!!!!
Hokies!
Need a good game from Gurdak/Dorn. Hansberry needs to stay out of foul trouble. Let Lawal do his pogo stick thing with some back door alley oops. Bedford, Schutt, and Hammond have solid games. And dang it Neo... no lazy passes!
I can feel this Pitt/BC game going into OT and taking away the start of our game.
Glad I was wrong!
Go HOKIES!
This is going to be a two hour stomach ache isn't it?
Who is Benny Hammond?
Avdalas gets hacked on the lay-up. Then Hansberry gets chicken winged.... No calls
Syracuse hitting every 3 pointer they are throwing up.
And Neoklis missing a semi uncontested layup. Not a good look
I gave a leg for your astute observation, but I want to take away 100 for it being fact!
haha. I respect that.
Not sure why we can't do the basics like make layups and save the ball to our own team.
Syracuse going reverse uno. This season they typically shot 55%+ inside and 32% outside. Tonight its 56% outside and 33% inside.
Gurdak has exceptional hands.
Jump up! Not into the shooter. smh
That was a REALLY STUPID foul by Bedford. We seem to do that a couple times a game. No excuse for fouling 3pt shooter
I have a bad feeling about this game. Syracuse is on a heater this game
Par for the course in the dome. After the way they played against BC, I figur d they would light it up tonight.
Dorn is a liability on both ends
I was hoping Dorn would have a better game. Unfortunately he's playing like the freshman he is.
Totally blanked on the Cuse travel in paint which leads to shooting foul on us
The fade away is not Lawal's shot. He usually leaves it short.
Missing free throws...especially front end of 1 and 1. Total zero possession
How many times have we missed a wide open post guy underneath? At least five by my count.
I will never understand Lawal getting tied up within five feet of basket. Just jump. Force them to contest.
It looks like he ends up with the ball between his knees and his waist. That allows the other team to swat it loose. If he'll control the ball from his chest up then the swatting will most likely be a foul. Or like you said... JUMP!
Yeah regardless of where he has the ball. Just Jump. His vertical alone forces a foul. Ball could be on the floor but 50 inches straight up just causes chaos.
Agreed
Pitiful possession there. Didn't like the transition three, but when we were lucky enough to get the board you gotta get it back outside and hold for last shot.
Chance to be down 4-5 and now it'll be 7-10
Hoping cuse reverts to their mean on their 3pt shooting for the 2nd half.
Just cant seem to string together stop and scores. Frustrating
GurDUNK
Taking WAY TOO many threes after we get a stop
This team can't buy a 3 and Hansberry with foul trouble.
Like a broken record this year
How is that a foul on floor when Gurdak is in the air to tip when it occurred?
Now Gurdak with four. Super frustrating because they have been bad fouls
That fourth one was soft.
Was that not goaltending?
BS there is no review for goaltending. He definitely hit it after it hit backboard
Thats the downside on the new rule is Young would have had to challenge. Official was looking right at it though.
12 team fouls but 8 on Gurdak and Hansberry
definitely need to start making FT
Thats the third time they changed an out of bounds call to a foul on us
How is hitting Lawal on the arm a jump ball?
Good question. I wondered the same thing.
Ben! MF Hammond!
Stud!!
Five and a half to go, up 4
Finish him! gif
MAKE FREE THROWS
Get Avdalas out!!!
I don't think Neo has gotten a 3 past the front rim in his last 10 attempts.
His shooting lately is ... I dont know what to call it .... Not Good, Bob!
His short range game is hitting front rim as well. I think he has tired legs and isn't elevating.
Why does Avdalas always seem to take a bad three when we get a second chance opportunity
Neo is either hurt or out of shape (or both). He's a step slow and not elevating on his shots. Would also explain the mental errors (which was his strength early).
Any way you slice it he is a liability at closing time
Would explain his performance late in games. Dead legs.
Avdalas, please only shoot wide open 3s. You are 6'9" just drive the ball and shoot over people.
Cuse is the 2nd worst FT shooting team in nation...shooting 78% tonight.
Make that 82%
86%
No need to rush the ball. Run the clock.
Umm. Lawal. That's free points for Syracuse without them using any time
And no stupid fouls!!
Didn't need that 3 and it wasn't a clean look...then a foul on the rebound stops the clock.
This is why we can't close games
...and passed up a wide open 'oop to take it.
And another quick 3..wtf
Hammond has earned the right to shoot whenever he wants. Kid has been money these last games.
Sorry No Not when there are 20+ seconds on shot clock under two minutes to play. Thats 1/6th of the remaining time. Piss poor fundamental basketball
Here we go again. Taking shots with over 20 seconds on shot clock. We never seem to learn our lessons
CMY can't believe that 3 attempt by Hammond
Did we learn nothing after blowing the lead against Stanford? Why are we still shooting 3s with 20 seconds on the shot clock?
How is it a jump ball when Syracuse doesn't have a hand on ball?
Autry said it was so, and the ref listened...AGAIN
that should have been a foul on starling
Jump ball??? Cuse guy wasn't even touching the ball.
I'll drink
Hammond is him
HIMmond
Hammond is dope!
We'd be so effed this ACC season without Hammond
I love hammond
Neo did the impossible. He stopped himself from shooting
That scared the living you know what out of me!
You could hear the bench screaming and it looked like someone was about to tackle him if he put it up...lol
Did you hear CMY yell "NOOO!" right beside him?
37 foot 3 pointer...never a doubt against us in final minute
Here we go again....
Why....just why???
We've missed 8 FTs. Make half of those and this game is already over.
Sad when we are up 9 with a minute and am thinking how do they blow it rather than expecting them to put it away
And then they do this
What the fuck is wrong with this team??
We are AWFUL at end of games
OMG. GUYS. STOP
Schutt got hammered in the head on that "turnover".
Only we could blow this game.
This is fucking embarrassing
WHAT THE FUCK ARE WE DOING
Neo with a dead brain TO
Why? How many fucking times do we have to watch this exact shit?
How many games do we have left? 10?
10 more times. Plus any postseason games.
We dont even play defense
Im done with this team.
This is middle school shit.
CMY needs to be moved on. There is no excuse for this repeated bullshit.
There were multiple times he was shaking his head and screaming no, and the group on the floor screwed up anyway.
Who draws up these inbounds plays?
Haven't even tried to inbounds to Hammond the last two attempts
What is reviewable?
Guess they reviewed to see if Neo was kicked when down.
How is that even reviewable? You cant review for a missed travel, right?
Maybe we should actually play regular defense when we are closing out a game?? Maybe don't inbound to Avdalas late in games??
If you can review a travel after the fact these games are about to take an hour longer
Neo can't make free throws when it matters.
Another Avdalas miss in final 15 seconds
Are we allergic to defense in the final minute?
Neo turns the ball over, doesn't play anything that resembles defense, and isn't a reliable FT shooter.
Why the hell is he in the game, Mike??? Please give me any reason why this makes sense.
Syracuse winning on a half court three at the end. We getting the same ending as last Wednesday
Hard to win when we shoot 50% from the line with anyone not named Hammond. And don't play defense at all.
So we need Neo to make 2 FT to win it.
Come on Avdalas. Please man.
LAWAL WITH THE CRITICAL REBOUND
La-WOW!
Lawal with the makes
FAM
I miss easy wins.
We tried to lose another one
Omg. Imagine if Lawal missed both FTs
All these teams come back when we stop playing defense
First win at Syracuse since 01.18.2010!!! Damn
We won there in January 2020 67-63
Yeah. I can't read.
Another 38 minute game with some luck
Lawal and Hammond won that one. Clutch FTs at the end. Still too stressful for my heart.
Stopped watching at the half so we could have a chance at the win. It worked!
I didn't watch, I'm starting to see a trend!
