Battle for the State and Battle for the Bubble
Not sure its ever happened, but the Hokies have an opportunity for a complete basketball sweep of UVA today. It will be an uphill battle though. After losing to the Hokies in December, UVA is 15-2 with losses to UNC with Caleb Wilson and to Duke. The Hokies are in a must win or must win 2-3 games in ACC Tournament if they want to break the bubble. There are way too many bubble teams this season to leave it to chance.
I have seen comments about how Charlottesville has huge home cooking but the data doesnt prove that out. UVA only had one hone game that they were larger than a +3 in fouls drawn and that was against hackattack Pitt who leads the ACC in fouls this season. All the rest of their home games have been a +3/-3 margin.
That still isnt necessarily a good thing for the Hokies. The Hokies had 30 free throw attempts in the first meeting so dont expect that today. They will need to hit their shots.
In all its ACC wisdom, this is another Commonwealth Clash held when students are on break as UVA Spring Break started yesterday.
Expect to see the Havoc full court pressure and extremely aggressive man-to-man defense looking for turnovers and transition scoring. High pace means high turnover on the players on the floor so expect UVA to go as many as twelve deep.
The Post play numbers are driven by their Freshman from Europe, Johann Grunloh and Thijs De Ridder along with transfer Forward Ugonna Onyenso from Nigeria. The trio put up 29.8 ppg, 16.6 rpg and 5.5 bpg. De Ridder does most of the scoring at 16 ppg and the other two most of the blocks.
Handling the ball is another Freshman Phenom that had the Hokies in his final two. Chance Mallory is putting up 10 ppg, 3.9 rpg, and 3.5 apg as a change of pace off the bench. The kid can absolutely take over a game though. He ran Texas ragged.
BYU Transfer Senior Dallin Hall is the starting PG putting up 6.1ppg, 3.7 rpg and 4.2 apg.
Their defense isn't where Odom wants it in terms of creating turnovers as Opponents are averaging just 10.8 per game. Thats less than the first time we faced them. Odom has a stated goal of 15 per game. They dont run full court press the entire game but Odom definitely uses it early to try to create an early lead to set the tone.
Offensively they utilize a high number of pick and roll plays with as many as three players attacking simultaneously. The only weakness to this is it exposes them to transition opportunities in the other direction but they attack the basket for second chance opportunities. They are averaging 13.5 offensive rebounds a game and putting up almost 12 second chance points.
Shooting wise, they are hitting 55% inside and 33% from perimeter. Their three point shooting took a major crash since December. They were 16th in D1 last time, that has fallen to 95th. Malik Thomas, Sam Lewis and Jacari White are their volume shooters outside, accounting for about 50% of their perimeter shots. White though is the threat, hitting 44% of his 5 attempt per game.
They have scorers consistently on the floor with Ridder/Thomas starting and Mallory/White off the bench so they rarely have those four minute scoring droughts that Hokies fans have come to dread the last few seasons.

Comments
The CW after that banger of a first game between us? Guess I'll not watch since you can't stream it. I'm sure I could find it but I don't know if it's worth the effort.
Let's go
HOKIES!
Huge game for the HOKIES at loluva. Quad 1 away game. Need to put it all together. No stupid mistakes!
LET'S GO...
Well... we had one rebound... knocked away... 2nd chance 3 pointer.
This game is over.
UVA is going to win by 20+
Not great Bob.
Laying down
Shooting 10%
Its like watching the ladies against UNC
Letting them shoot 5 for 7 from 3 when as a team they averaged 33%
And we're 1-8
Jesus christ. They Can't miss from 3
Would somebody please tell NEO to STOP SHOOTING FUCKING THREES!
Fought back just to lay an egg at the end of the half.
What an absolute clusterfuck in the last 2 min to go from Down 6 to down 16.
Cut their lead to 6 by getting to the lane. Then decided jacking up 3's every possession was the best bet.
Neo is pressing again. He got better when he played within the flow of the game. He's not doing that today.
My fault, I stopped working on the tractor to watch.
Hokies 7-0 run to start the second...
13-4 run now
Down to 4!
Down to 2!
LETS GOOOOOO!
Did anyone else lose feed?
Not me
completely blacked out on youtube TV here in eastern NC. just a few minutes ago
I'm watching on CW
Go to youtube.com. I found it there
TIED!
That was clearly last touched by UVA. Johnson did even touch it.
Should have kept that challenge in your pocket in such a close game.
Bullshit call by the refs. That was clearly out on Thomas even the home court announcers agreed the slow motion was clear.
For the love of all things holy please get Hammond back in the game.
And now a clear tip, called airball and TO
Refs can't have UVA get swept by Tech.
FIFY
why do we insist on shooting over a 7-footer?
That's obviously not right. I can't believe they can let that go. If they aren't getting paid off, they should not be officiating games that mean anything.
Ugh. Hansberry hurt
Went down 9 - back to 4
Of course there was foul on Virginia Tech, not like they are going to call anything on UVA.
2nd half... 3 on loluva, 8 on VT
and notice how they call it away from the ball, in a crowd, under the basket.
Yeah theve called fouls 13-5 against us, although free throws attemted are even at 9 each
Better question is why were they shooting free throws when we had the ball.
Need to run an offense and get to the basket.
Neo jacks up a step back 3.
Hammond approves.
2 costly misses at the line there.
33 has taken our lunch money today
Should have been a Technical against UVA for delay of game when their player fouled out.
Once again can't finish down the stretch. Amazing job by the boys to battle back to a tie in the second half though.
Just don't know how to blame CMY for this one, so I won't. Good damn game, really good try, but no cigar.
Another day at the office for CMY and Co. Really good basketball in the second half... really bad basketball in the first (sometimes it's the opposite).
Only about 35 or so more of these until we see something different.
7-30 from 3. Oof.
We go 9-30 and we win
3 missed fts in the last 2 minutes would have us tied with 8 sec left here.
You give them a clean inbound and then let 4 secs run before the foul???
It ain't like the HOKIES didn't have their chances. Should get a pretty decent NIT seed.
CMY and the boys were smart this game. They had their collapse and stretch of bad play to close out the first half instead of the 2nd. That way you've forgotten about it and feel more like you battled in a close game that didn't go our way.
The ACC needs to get their shit together. The refs should have been jobbing uva all game to get another team in the tourney. I thought this was a serious basketball conference?!?!/s
