OT: April Fools' Day 2026 Thread

I usually loathe this day, because it seems that most "April Fools!11!" attempts are just low-energy bullshit like "Hey, did you hear we scheduled Ohio State, Texas, and Alabama for home games next year? APRIL FOOLS! Got you, hur dur!"

But occasionally, there is a decent effort here and there, and this is one of them:

The likes of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Tom Holland, Harris Dickinson, Scott Rose-Marsh and Callum Turner were rumoured to be in contention for the next superspy, and recent reports suggested that 28-year-old Australian actor Jacob Elordi was the current favourite to play 007.

Now, Euronews Culture can officially end all speculation by revealing that the identity of the new James Bond is... Irish actress and singer Jessie Buckley.

You read correctly: James Bond will be played by a woman for the first time, in the wake of Lashana Lynch briefly taking over the 007 mantle in Daniel Craig's Bond swansong, 2021's No Time To Die.

More casting news was also revealed, with Tom Hiddleston playing the franchise's first Bond boy - named Fitty McCrotch – and the new M is set to be portrayed by none other than Gillian Anderson. Both frankly inspired choices.

An Amazon spokesperson told Euronews Culture: "We're distancing ourselves from the previous stance held by franchise head Barbara Broccoli, who said that Bond should only be played by a man. We're thrilled to have Jessie Buckley on board. Additionally, her initials are also 'JB', so that's delightful. Plus, her singing background makes her the ideal candidate for the project, as we've been thinking of adding some musical numbers into the mix."

They continued: "Daniel Craig was an inspired casting choice, and he showed how the character could be updated and enriched over his tenure in the role. Very early on in the casting process for Bond 26, we realised that trying to follow in his footsteps was a fool's errand. So, we've decided to opt for a radical new interpretation, one which will doubtlessly spark discussion."

"And by discussion, we mean rile up countless misogynists whose fragile egos and warped sense of masculinity will be assaulted by this news of a fictional spy being played by a woman," they clarified.

I'll admit, I was amused by this one, mainly because it started out looking like a serious article, then took an April Foolsy turn.

What decent April Fools jokes have you come across today?

Saw someone post that Tim Sands had announced his retirement for this summer but then they ruined it in the closing sentence.

All I know is Artemis II is "supposed to" launch today. NASA's really going all out this year.

If you play it, they will win.

They did an update last year.

And yes, the Charlotte NBC weatherman's name is Larry Sprinkle.

One of the best I ever heard had a good bit of setup. For the week prior to 1 Apr in 1998, 99X had had episodes where the DJs mikes were left on during commercial breaks, and you could hear them chatting to each other. On 1 Apr, it happened again, when they were discussing confirming Leonardo diCaprio's phone call-in, with one DJ suggesting the other call him at [number number number]. diCaprio had actually recorded a voicemail greeting for the answering service, and over the next month, the radio station had a blast playing clips from fangirls calling in thinking they had lucked into diCaprio's home number.

Long-lead setup, casual non-obvious execution, big payoff....all the things necessary for a great April Fool's prank.

The only thing I could find online about this was an Atlanta newspaper archive from 6 April 1998, which I'm not going to sign up for a preview to get.

This fits the thread.

Locking the door to an escape room business? That's some high-quality prank right there!

Here's a perfect example of the low-energy bulldog that makes me hate this day.

Not sure how much of those were April Fools, but the NFL has told him no. You are a minority owner, you can't play anymore. Not to mention he is 49...

My 7 year old daughter came down while I was making breakfast and declared she is going to uva. I instinctively said "um. No." And turned around to see her in a uva shirt. It was early so my brain didnt register the date until she yelled april fools. Pretty proud of her tbh

The entire '25 VT Football Season felt like an April Fool's joke, sadly.

But lots of hope on the horizon.

It came on April 2, but got an unsolicited e-mail from the G-mail address of a beautiful Indian woman quoting my LinkedIn profile and offering me a $700K-$900K VP role. Does that qualify as an April Fools' note :-)?

Got a project at work that involves a bunch of people turning in some issued devices. I knew that I would be sending out an e-mail this week telling them to turn in those devices. Once it was clear that I wouldn't be able to get it sent out on March 31, I made sure to hold that e-mail until April 2. I wasn't sending any significant procedure altering e-mails or memos out on April 1.
