And the Siena lead is gone. Their starters haven't subbed out once and I have to imagine the Duke depth is about to take over and this is going to be a 10+ win for Duke.

They hung in there longer and kept it closer than I expected but I generally don't get too much concerned about scores at Half in 1 v. 16 and 2 v. 15 games. Lots of times these teams can keep up for 20-25 minutes but once the starters are gassed, the floor drops out below them.
The once obvious exception was UVA who got absolutely boat-raced by UMBC from Tip to Buzzer.

I'd have loved to see the chaos of Duke going down, but let's all remember that a certain record still stands now and belongs to just one team. If only I could remember what team that was.........

They wanted him to resign because they didn't want him to fire him outright for optics. Tried to shame him into it. But Davis called their bluff and they were forced to fire him. I'll stubbornly eat my hat as I was hard in the camp of letting CMY go after this season. But having to go up against UNCheat for a HC would be a fool's errand, especially if the reported dearth of quality candidates is true this offseason (I really have no idea). MBB is in a terrible situation as a program right now, but having CMY back can provide some stability for next season. Although I would think it is very hard to recruit when you are on the last year of your contract amid rumors your bosses were considering firing you!

Lets be honest, we couldn't go head to head with over half the ACC for a basketball coach with how our program is funded.
UNC is going to test waters on Pitino and other top P4 coaches, we are forced to look at G5/below head coaches and/or experienced P4 Assistant Coaches....and even that's questionable.

Possibly the only thing more random, subjective and plainly stupid than targeting calls in CFB are the incessant reviews to determine flagrant fouls in CBB.
TCU player literally went over the top of Boozer and just grabbed onto his shoulder to try and brace his fall on the way down.
There should be no Replay in college basketball it's absolutely awful and done nothing to make the game better

I will never understand this basic lack of strategy in college basketball.
In late game situations, there is no scenario where you should ever, ever, ever guard the inbounder when pressing.
This has been a Mike Young favorite, and Florida just did it to give a wide open three to Iowa and lose in the final seconds.
After a dead ball, the inbounder can run the Baseline--having somebody there does literally nothing other than take a potential Defender and leave them way in the back court where they can watch from 50+ feet away.
Drop that player back to Halfcourt... it prevents the breakout pass like Iowa got, and gives you a guy to trap if they try and dribble up the sideline.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Thought of this as well, though the situation was slightly different.
SMU had the ball after a missed VT Free-throw so the Inbounder couldn't run the Baseline.
But its all about situation...SMU had 2 seconds...the best decision would have been to use the extra defender to try to force the Inbounds as close to the baseline as possible--in VT'S case an extra defender would certainly have kept Miller from advancing so freely up the sideline. He would have ended up having to heave a 60+ footer with a hand in his face rather than a clean Half-courter.
For Florida, they used a 6'4" guy to "cover" a mobile inbounder and he had absolutely no effect on the inbounds pass. With 8 secs left, they Iowa was almost certain to get the ball to the Frontcourt so having a defender 40 feet behind the play was asinine.
But the results were very similar, both VT and UF took timeouts, up 2 points to concoct a "strategy" that gave their opponent clean looks at the basket.
Covering the inbounder makes sense in this scenario: the opponent has a stationary inbounder and you have Wembenyana to cover him--otherwise you are much better off to have 5 defenders back.

What an absolutely blown inbounds play by Duke. Boozer could have dribbled to the left and either get fouled or make the pass to the Duke player on the baseline. Just should have dribbled and got fouled. Coach Hurley is the man. Great adjustments, great coaching, and great execution by the player's.
Great game overall.

Still the same man, doesn't mean he can't coach. Though I laughed when the Lakers tried to lure him to the west coast. He married a Jersey girl who though living in RI was far from her family. There was no chance of him accepting that job. He took them for a free vacation.

Technically he is until June since they are letting his contract expire so they dont owe him a buyout. Randy Bennett has been hired to replace Hurley but they played contract games so he takes over at the end of Hurley's contract or something to that effect.

Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
That's right up there with the statistic that teams are 222-0 when leading by 24 at the half, and then we came back and beat Arkansas, making it 222-1.

I don't necessarily feel bad for Hurley per se but after last year's Final officiating was openly criticized on EPSN by Bilas and Jay Williams (the refs called like 4 total fouls in 1st Half and let Houston play absolute BullyBall, then completely changed it up and called almost 20 in the 2nd Half)--I was hoping it would be a better called game this year.
Barring atypical circumstances, there is no way you can justify a 3:1 Foul Ratio. Michigan's #21 could have probably been called for 12-14 fouls on Rebound attempts and the refs swallowed whistles time and again.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Bball officiating has become so sloppy, nonexistent too many times, and at best, inconsistent.
I'm 55, if the rules that were enforced when I was growing up today, I would foul out in the first five minutes or not foul out at all, as the ref's would be calling carries and travels every other second.
Today, the pivot foot can move as much as it wants as long as the toe is touching the floor. It's Bball's version of the electric slide. Players fall to the ground with the ball in hand, slide a few feet and it's rarely, almost never called. The hand slapping, the push off's, the over the backs, the reaching in's, etc., etc., etc.....
It's such a sloopy game todsy, it's hard to respect.

A lot of the rule interpretations lately have made the game have more points but man is it hard to officiate. I see tons of clips that look like traveling real time but arent when slowed down or even just reviewed. Prior to AI no NBA player had an outside crossover. Players were either taught not to or didnt have the ability, now that the game is more fluid its just wrecking havoc on officials abilities.
That doesn't excuse a number of other issues like over the back, pushing off, and such.

For the year, Michigan hit the line at 1.5:1 over opponent trips. When you play under the basket, might end up getting more foul calls throughout. When you shoot a lot of threes, prob not as many calls go your way. (UConn was actually around 0.8:1 for opponents. Last night wasn't a stretch on the standard stats for the year, just a little more than usual.)
For the entire season, 915 FT attempts for UM, 670 FT attempts for UConn.

Late to the games today - Siena giving Duke more than it can handle right now
now with an 11pt lead ~5 minutes left in the 1st.
Duke and Vandy Losing. Wisconsin struggling with High Point. Madness has arrived early.
Vandy losing would basically have me burn my bracket before dinner.
I too bought some of the SEC hype like I haven't learned from years past.
Duke losing would hurt my bracket more.
Worth it
100% id rather duke lose than win my bracket
Wisconsin vs High Point was the one first round game I put a few dollars on.
That one took out an Elite Eight team for me. =^/
And the Siena lead is gone. Their starters haven't subbed out once and I have to imagine the Duke depth is about to take over and this is going to be a 10+ win for Duke.

What a great memory.
I'd have loved to see the chaos of Duke going down, but let's all remember that a certain record still stands now and belongs to just one team. If only I could remember what team that was.........
Unfortunately it doesnt, #1 Purdue lost to #16 Farleigh Dickinson 63-58 in 2023. That other school did it first though.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.
Unfortunately Purdue gave UVA some company a few years ago after they lost to Farleigh Dickinson in the 1st round of the 2023 tournament.
But the best part is no one remembers and only associates it with UVA.
UNC going to OT with VCU
My bracket is trash, but UNC loses - easy trade for me!
Everyone looking at their brackets....
That's me in the middle, who has VCU to the Elite Eight.
Im fine too- I Had UNC losing next game to Illinois, and i Had Whisky only winning 1 more before losing to Arizona in the sweet 16.
Unc:

Hahahahahahahaha
One of my tarheel neighbors started a group chat to trash talk Duke after nearly losing, right before UNC tipped off...swift karma
I know I just used it above, but it's well deserved here, too.
Sounds like Hubert Davis is done.
Weird, saw a media session with the Chancellor of North Carolina University System and he said no changes were being considered
Well Davis is out
Some one from UNC lied, nooooooo
According to at least one article, he met with the AD about his plans for the future and making things better. They fired him the next day, so I guess they didn't like his plans.

Davis had 5.3 million guaranteed reasons not to resign. UNC has already said they will comply with the buyout.

yeah, they are a mount Rushmore program, we only joined a power conference this century.
Well, this being UNC and all they will probably go after Larry Brown so he and Bill can share their Pepperidge Farm memories...

thats some funny shit Brent
I'm hoping the ACC gets back on track after losing 3/4 teams playing so far. I always like to see the conference do well in the postseason
Also lets go Wright State
That's always a tough one for me. I like to see the conference do well, but I love to see the teams in the conference not do well.
Kentucky should have lost. The other coach called a timeout before the game winner but it didnt get called
Mj Collins showed out for Utah State! That makes two former Hokies going to the next round.
Wright St was wrong.
Michigan looks like they are going to be very tough to beat. They definitely have size, but more importantly all of their bigs are very athletic.
St. Louis is putting up a good fight but they just are overmatched athletically.
Their Frontcourt is more impressive to me than Duke and probably even Florida
Why in the hell did I trust loserville?

Wow that Vanderbilt half court shot...
If that was a shot to beat VT, it would have gone in. 100%
Suck it Miami.
There's been one game so far today, which I got correct. How did my max possible points go down? Somethings wrong with espn.
At this point, I'm team ACC. Each win is worth $2 million a year for the ACC for five years, no?
Around $350k per year to the conference. What would VT see out of it? Maybe a new popcorn machine.
We would only need that for one more season...
Technically not true, right, cuz CMY gave up the popcorn this past season per doctor's orders?
Suck it hoos.
F UVA. That is all.
Zero perfect brackets left on ESPN

This morning on tv, one of the commentators quipped that every time Duke gets beat by a buzzer beater, an angel gets their wings. I'm still laughing.
Ok I think ranked rooting interests for me at this point are UConn, Arizona, Illinois, Michigan. I have no real affiliation with any of these schools.
I did six brackets on E$PN's challenge. On my best bracket I rank number 491,093 with UConn as my champion. So I guess I'm pulling for UConn.

1st Half Fouls:
UConn
10.11 : Mich 4.Chances Dan Hurley goes Postal: 98.6%
...and it continues into 2nd Half...now 14-4 Foul differential.
Michigan is probably the superior team, but there's no basketball game ever played where a > 3:1 foul advantage is reasonable
Unless you're playing hack-a-Shaq
..or you're a joke franchise like the Wizards aiding Bam Adebayo and making you look like clowns
If it wasn't UConn and Hurley I might feel bad but UConn gets plenty of love from officials and a bit of the rub of the green to be crying about that
