"Brown is a consensus top 10 recruit in Virginia who is ranked seventh overall by 247 Sports, ninth by ESPN, and tenth by Rivals. He is considered the top WR in Virginia by 247 Sports and the second best WR behind Richmond standout Iveon Lewis for both ESPN and Rivals."
This is the guy that I mentioned last year that had good hands and didn't get tackled easily.

Pre xfer craziness, I think you need 6 4* a year at VT to have a really good class, you have to hit on 4 of those 6 though. Meaningful playing time 2 years in and starter for atleast 1 year. A 4* at every level of D each year and 3 on offense with needed a 4* QB to start.
We were arguably q DB away from this even with more than 6 4* this year, if we can do that again but with some DBs then we are doing everything right

Always a glutton for schadenfreude, I checked in at le sabre for a few minutes this morning to see if it bothered them over there. Seems not. They are confident that their team of other school's starters and their returning players will outperform our future freshmen and unproven transfers, and that they have the money to keep it going, and they definitely love Elliot. They're convinced we won't be a problem for them next year, figuring Franklin's targeting '27 as our "arrival", and they may be right there, but we'll see.

Does UVa have a lot of their team back next year? I don't have any idea.
In fairness, I don't think that what they are saying is off base. The incoming class won't be playing much. We have a new system being installed. While I do think the foundation in being laid to pound them into the ground, I can totally see (hope it won't happen, but can totally see) them beating us next year. By 2027 season, I'd hope we would be established and well ahead to have another big, long winning streak. We can win in 2026, but I see it as a toss-up or even slight UVa advantage if they have a lot of their players coming back.

I think Richard Johnson said they're trying to follow the Indiana blueprint by focusing on portaling older guys who have proven production, even if they are undersized or whatnot.
Definitely easier said than done.

No idea if it is going to work out for UVA or not, but I predict good number of teams are going to fall on their faces trying to replicate Indiana's success.

I think its less insane than doing it in the BCS era where they would need to recruit better and get votes.
Still insane, but I don't think the approach Indiana took is that different than Beamers approach. We had a ton of stsrtees that were no where close to athletic as their backups, but the played because they produced. Heck, if I said pick a hokie that leads their franchise in tackles everyone would guess Bruce and be wrong (great guess though as hes 2nd), but who would have ever thought James Anderson would be the answer. Who thought Cody Grimm would start in the NFL. We had defenses loaded with guys that did there assignments well and produced well but didn't have the athletism that most teams playing at the level Bud had VT playing. VT has the number 1 defense and it places guys in the NFL, Bama has the number 1 defense and they have 4 1st rounders. Frank and Bud made their living on guys that did their job and produced reliably. Cig is just a better talent evaluator and has money backing him that VT dreams of.

Fair point that 15-25 years ago they would not have been able to transfer in all of Cig's players. Which would have made it harder to build a winning team.
However, 13-0 Indiana is definitely making the BCS Natty game unless there are 2 other undefeated teams. And then they only have to win 1 more game to be champs. This year's team went 13-0 then had to beat 3 other playoff teams.
Harder to say which era would be more impressive, but considering it was the first time in 30 years that we had a new champ it is clearly still unbelievable.

Oh completely unbelievable. Its insane that they xfer portal and paying players have made coaches MORE valuable not less. When interviewing you have to ask who a coach is bringing with them. And why Indiana is an outlier, i think we are going to see less dominance in college football as teams can't hoard talent. 20 years ago 3-4 teams had a shot any year, now a single injury could derail a championship run cause if lack of depth ethic opens up to 5-8 teams that could win it any given year. We will never see a Miller-Barrett-Jones QB room again.

They have a core of returnees and have shored up some from 27 transfers. They won't be bad this year, but we'll probably be favored by year's end, even if slightly, as long as we develop as we all hope we will.

Always a comedy show to watch the LOLUVA fans in times like this...
If it's a low 3* they picked up somewhere they will dig and dig until they find the highest ranking (regardless of the service) and let everyone know they got a borderline 4*.
If it's a composite 4* they lost (especially to their big brother) they talk about how he was really a 3* (by the lowest service they can find) and they really have solid depth at the position anyway.
Finally, even though CJF has out recruited Tony Elliot, both at the high school level and with the transfer portal, they say it doesn't matter because, like Indiana, they are putting a premium on the average age of their players and, again like Indiana, that is what is most important these days.

What is really interesting about our Top 20 ranking is that the composite average has us right about the same spot. There isn't any "fools gold" when you see the ranking (a lot of schools shoot up in the rankings because of the 247 total). We currently #3 in the ACC in both the "total" ranking and based on the average composite.

Need to land a blue chip or two and ensure we have ACC caliber players in positions of need. For some reason we seem to struggle to get talented players to show out wearing O&M. We've had a number of players transfer to other schools and look like a completely different athlete. That needs to stop if we're going to raise the bar and compete for conference championships.

What I was told was he just started playing football not long ago and that my coworker went to one of his games last year (my coworker coached him in basketball), and he said he was put on defense and looked very out of sorts.
I know that's defense and playing WR is different, but he said he'd need some work learning the game. But he did say that he's a freak athlete, can jump out of the gym playing bball, and that his size and ability to move would make it hard to defend playing WR.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
You just made me way more excited with that. He's barely played and is already a borderline 4 star and is a good basketball player (I already knew that part)? This dude is already a decent WR but he's basically 100% upside and athleticism. He's Antonio Gates.

Unlike so many prior coaching staffs, let's hope we can actually see development from this one. Know you can't judge based on 1 player developing or not. But it feels like for 10-15 years we've recruited lots of "athletes" that rarely develop. Some do, but the end of the Beamer years and the Fuente years ...
And God, don't even get me started on the last time a VT QB showed any improvement year-over-year.

So he's transferring from North Cross to Roanoke Catholic?
Not that Roanoke has really ever been D1 hot bed, but when I was there Catholic and North Cross were not considered good at all...like 1-10 records were the norm....
Fleming, PH would have D1 guys every few years and the county schools more D2 than anything but the privates were playing mostly just to say they had teams at that point...

North Cross had another recruit who committed to PSU then flipped to UNC after Franklin got fired. I went to school with the kids dad, so I've been watching him grow up on social media. Pretty good athlete who I think could be a solid ACC contributor along the way. I liked his Jr. year film, but did think it was telling that he didn't follow Franklin to VT.
Anyway... I say all that to say there are some athletes at that school now.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Yeah, I knew North Cross had several lineman go D1 --including a couple to VT (Hammer, dont remember the other), but after looking it up their team records have been consistently good to excellent for at least 10 years.
Big change from what I remember...now I feel old.

Recruited by Mines.
Beautiful to see Mines flip a guy from UVA to VT, I gotta say
"Trust me when I say this, playing WR at UVA was the low-light of my life and being at VT is the highlight"

Rivalry renewed as Virginia Tech coach James Franklin flips WR Demarcus Brown from Virginia

Was Virginia's highest rated recruit so far
Surely he's better than _that_.
Another nice get for the class.
I am hoping this is a sign of the floor of the class being significantly higher than years past.
Also nice to steal a good player from UVA-last year feels like a fluke. I still think Tony Elliot is a terrible coach.

I still can't believe Indiana did what they did. It is truly insane that they won a championship in this environment.

Agreed. I just don't think other places are as good as scouting as Cig & Staff.
That said, in the portal/NIL era, I don't think blunders can ruin a program for years on end (assuming the booster money is there).
To malprop Boris the Blade- "always side with productivity"

Composite 4 star on 247

Seems a good kid too. Am informed of some stuff but I don't want to post online.
Love to see that, straightening out those kids in VA. Friends don't let friends play football at uva.
Flip ya for real.
Hey UVA......catch you on the "flip" side!

Hurry up and hang the banner

Always fun to steal from little brother.
My coworker knows the kid/family, but with what he's told me, my excitement will be tempered. Hope he pans out.
Hmm, between Soup and Eg, now my hopes are tempered.
Eg's comment seemed positive, so I'm going to assume it . That cancel's out Soup's potentially negative comment, so my hopes are 100% un-tempered.
Personally i find that my hopes are mostly ill-tempered

Oh man, hadn't thought about that. Was tyrod the last guy to show improvement from one season to the next?
And Tyrod's still playing! He's like the Don Strock of his generation.
In my opinion, yes, he is the last one.
Wasn't Brewer better in his second year until he got injured?
Until he got injured? Didn't brewer get injured right after halftime of game 1?
Best he had looked all season up to that point
Ha, can't argue that one
IMO: Brewer was undefeated against Ohio State
This is correct. In the second game, he didn't play more than half of the quarters to be eligible for the win. ;^)
He was a starting pitcher who played more than a half and went to the bench with the leave before a blown save (and collarbone).
Was he injured in the 2nd or 3rd, I can't remember.
3rd. He very famously said "they will have to hit me harder than that" when they had cameras in the locker room at halftime
My comment is more funny and schadenfreude Absolutely not anything negative.

MoSchmo went to Pitt, now heading to Wofford. That's probably who you were thinking of.
Most of the best players in roanoke are transferring to RC next year, including Brown. There are a handful that we are recruiting
Sauces inform me he's been at football camps very frequently lately instead of attending events such as junior prom, etc.
Word is he is graduating early so he can attend VT next spring.
