Sources: Maryland and Virginia Tech have adjusted the schools' four-game home-and-home series to now play only twice. Maryland will host Tech in 2026 as planned and return the game in Blacksburg in 2029. Maryland has added Baylor to replace the other two Tech games. pic.twitter.com/2OitGfewc8β Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) May 29, 2026
Not sure what's prompting this adjustment. We were already down to three non-con games in 2027 and 2028. This leaves us with Liberty and Notre Dame as opponents in each of those years.
2027 - 5 ACC home games + Liberty
2028 - 4 ACC home games + Liberty and ND
Maybe we're angling for 7 home games in 2028, and dropping the other was collateral damage because we had to cut the series to an even number? 2029 only has an away game at Arizona with our home Maryland game, so we probably preferred to keep that over 2027.

Freeing up space for us to play the Big 10 or SEC teams when we get the invites to those conferences after we make the playoffs?
I like this one better ....
I would be good with cutting it to zero tbh
Na, I like playing at Maryland cause it will be a home game for all yhe northern va hokies. And I benefit from that
At this point I am just going to say it. The Big10 is chicken shit scared to play VT. Prove me wrong. I present the Wisconsin series, the Michigan series, the Penn St series, and now the Maryland series. And you present...?
Sadly we were ass when we played rutgers and purdue
Yeah we might have an argument if we could have beaten the bottom of the barrel B1G teams in the past.
Yeah, but we beat anOSU when they won the national title. We also beat Michigan in a bowl game as Danny Coale caught that ball.
NY6 bowl game, TYVM.
Hopefully the days of ass are over for Virginia Tech football.
Basketball....I'm not really hopeful.
What?!?! I only remember one game against Purdue when we whipped them all up and down their high school sized stadium.
Yep I was at that game! We picked up an extra ticket for $5 !
Other notes-there was a Purdue fan tailgating next to us who was gaga over every time we played any Journey music, lol! Also on the walk back, some students tried to heckle us and bad mouth us from their dorm windows as we walked back to our car. We just said- look at the scoreboard!
To their credit- 1) the hatred for their rival is awesome; during every every kickoff REGARDLESS of who they're playing that day, the crowd counts down to the actual kick by saying "I...U...sucks!"
2) After the football game the women's volleyball team hosted Notre Dame in the Mackey arena. Tickets were only $5 in a Pack the Mack promotion. There was a crowd of about 7k there and their cheerleaders would lead the crowd as play went onn with the whole audience yelling as each hit occurred "bump! set! spike!"-it was actually pretty impressive!
Let's be honest that 2029 game in Blacksburg will get canceled for some reason. As you said that is just how things go with us and Big10 teams apparently.
I WOULD have been 40 or so when this was originally supposed to be played; as currently showing I'll be 66 if it doesn't get delayed AGAIN. With the way it's going I could get the call for my 100th birthday before the series is ever played!
Still hoping to visit the Grove in 2037 at age 72!
As long as we beat them this year, I don't care whether we play them again or not. They're are a bottom b10 team.
I saw a graphic floating around about how the Big 10 added UMD, Rutgers and Nebraska all in a few year span, and those teams have combined for a total of 6 wins against ranked opponents since they joined the Big 10.
Obviously the Big 10 added UMD and Rutgers for viewership and TV contract reasons, not for football resumes, but still. UMD leads the way with 4 ranked wins since joining the Big 10 in 2014, and all of them are ooc. If this graphic I saw is correct, they literally haven't beaten a ranked big 10 team since joining the big 10 over a decade ago. Isn't that insane?
Even we have beaten a ranked big 10 team in that timeframe and we a) have been ass per our standards and b) don't play anywhere near the number of big 10 games that they do. Just wild that they get to be part of a "new power conference" and get tons of TV money while we are trying desperately to not get left out in the cold.
MD went to 9 bowls in 14 years, from 2001-2014. Then they joined the B1G. Since then, 4 bowl games.
I think about this when I hear clatter of VT to the $EC........
1) maybe they dont want to let Franklin hang 70 on them
2) fuck liberty
Amen.
And like 2008 when the terps had, checks box score, MINUS 12 yards rushing for the game. And Darren Evans had 253!
And a steam roll of I remember correctly.
One of the best VT RB trucks as well. Can still hear Darren backing whomever along the sideline. And gaining a few more for good measure.
We initiated it and are paying Maryland $600K to change the contract. We will still make more money by adding a 7th Home game in 2028 so this makes sense economically.
Andy Bitter clarified the contract adjustment. We are only paying Maryland $100K more in 2029 to remove the 2027 and 2028 games. Makes the move make even more sense as adding a home game in 2028 will definitely bring more than $100K in revenue.
Well damn, this really cuts into my Big10 is skeered take.
Replace with WVU
Yes, please.
Well, we are talking about WVU, so define marquee. lol
I know you're teasing but he means "a school the fanbase will care about playing."
WVU would fit that bill.
My hope for who we would play - Rutgers. I so want to watch us beat the shit out of them like back in the Mike Vick era.
