2026 Big Rock - Marlin Fever boats 920lb marlin

Likely the record breaker with 4 days left to fish. Probably a $6M+ payout. Jarrett Bay about to get a new boat order.

I was vacationing at Nags Head in 2008 and one of the boats in the marlin tournament at Pirate's Cove brought in the state record - over 1200 lbs and laying flat it came up above my knee, crazy fish!

6 million for a record marlin??

If its anything like other marlin tournaments, its early in the week. And that $6mil is assuming no other marlins are caught or those in all the Calcutta categories dont bring anything good to the scales. Prob will be in the 2ish range when all is said and done.

As much as I love to fish, tournament fishing has never had any appeal at all to me, and marlin don't interest me either. Hate to see them kill those big fish, though. Can't eat them, really seems like a waste to me. 6 mil. is quite an incentive, but to me, it ain't fishin'.

When you say can't eat them, I'm you mean like people typically don't eat them there is no restriction against catch and keep right? Most ocean fish are pretty tasty, what's wrong with Marlin?

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

You can eat a fish that size but it's probably full of worms. Luckily, there is a limit in the US on how many marlin are killed annually. I believe its around 200. Killing fish this size sucks though. It does not benefit anyone but the winner of the tourney. The local fisheries people will hopefully get to study this fish, though I'm not sure that's fully needed at this point.

Interesting, would not have guessed it would have worms or parasites. I assumed it was boney or tough or has a bad flavor

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

It probably is tough with a bland flavor but the worms and parasites have kept anyone from trying it. Most older fish get that way.

I suspect even a young marlin would be pretty bad, maybe filets could be smoked or something if hard pressed for food, I dunno. Marlin have a lot of meat, and somebody must have eaten some along the way, but those tourney fish are just not eaten. Maybe they go to a cat food factory or something, a less than productive way to treat your big fish that are the most important in the species genes. But, big bucks covers a lot of doubts and like flyguy says, there are some limits which, if enforced, should be helpful in balancing the harm.

Bow fishing tournaments are the worst. They shoot and arrow through the fish and they all end up in a dumpster afterwards.

The fish or the archers?

Locally here in the Bay, bow fishing for cownose rays got a little out of hand. The guides were just dumping the dead rays at the end of the day and they started washing up on our couple of small beaches in Mathews. Anger ensued and the behavior stopped, but not long afterward, the sport must have moved on and we don't see them around.

I saw a local article recently about bowfishing some sort of invasive snake-like fish taking off. I had no idea that bowfishing was a thing before that.

It's amazing what people will think of, I guess.

Bow hunting for fish isn't new, by any means. Usually not an issue of interest to non participants, at least until they get stupid and dump the carcasses where the public will be concerned.
You were mentioning the snakehead fish loosed upon VA waters by someone who didn't know better. They are supposedly excellent table fare and they bite hard and pull harder, so hope was to keep them trimmed down from taking too much forage from natural fishes by getting folks in the fishing community to help out. So far, not so good. Unlike the invasive blue catfish which was knowingly stocked for angling purposes, snakeheads likely were dumped in a local pond either for outgrowing their tank or not being eaten and then tossed. Their ability to use their fins and bodies to be able to move short distances on land helped spread them beyond the original point of release to becoming a nuisance.
It's the human touch that caused this, and we just don't seem to learn our lessons well.

Yeah, invasive species suck. I don't think we've been hit with the silver carp invasion that is plaguing the Missouri drainages, but they're probably coming. I'm fine with sticking invasives with a bow all else considered, but you're right humans suck and we've not done well by our wild friends in the woods and rivers.

Apparently re-introducing the native alligator gar is helping with some of those invasive species in the Mississippi.

Not for nothin', alligator gar were long a target of bow hunters in the deep south, by the way, and the first fish I remember reading about being bow hunted.

They eat the shit out of striped marlin in Cabo

Long liners catch them in the Atlantic, it's a steak fish like a wahoo

That's a big female they killed, that's alot of egg laying that was just sacrificed

I love to fly fish too but marlin fishing is awesome. Get a top water bite 20 yards behind the boat and it may change your opinion on it

Oh, I get the pursuit, just don't like killing big fish for money. I will admit to one unsatisfying trip out of Hatteras. I was the only newbie on the boat, and the only one that didn't get shitfaced as the day wore on without action. Three different times, I saw a bill up behind our rigs and called it out. Because I was new, and the captain was lazy in my opinion, he blew me off all three times after a cursory look once and then left it to the mate who was bored to tears and didn't bother to spend a minute to look. Finally, at day's end, we got a fish on and the woman who was first up took the chair and had a big bull dolphin on. Another rod went down and the mate yelled at me to take the chair as I was going to wake up the next man up, I said wait and the mate said nope and jumped into the chair. OK, I wised up and made him scoot, took the rod, and also was into a big bull mahi. Problem was, we both had the same fish. She'd fight him on her side, then I'd have him on my side for a bit. Got him in, 35 lbs and a great fish, but that was the sum of the day. I felt like it was money wasted and though the captain was well known and supposedly a great fisherman, I didn't care to go again. That was around '90. The ocean in the Gulf Stream is really cool and I loved being out on the water, but catching fish always beats a boat ride, especially an expensive one.

My limited Hatteras experiences also have been poor.

If you ever go to the Pacific side of Costa Rica, it's wild. A double digit sailfish release day isn't a big deal. There are lots of marlin and when they see the tuna schools, you can throw top water plugs on a big spinning rod to them and they crush it

Yeah, there are a lot of destination type fishing excursions I'd love to go on, but the ways and means don't make for many of them and my age is beginning to be a factor. If the fishing was still decent around the Mobjack, I'd be pretty happy staying for a while, but waiting it out just doesn't seem to be working. I'll be gone for good in a year or two.

Just returned an hour ago from Morehead City. I'm generally down there around the Big Rock but don't participate in all of the hoopla. It is interesting seeing all of the sportfish boats docked everywhere, particularly on Taylor Creek in Beaufort. Hundreds of millions of dollars of fishing boats. Michael Jordan usually enters. His sportfish has a wrap that makes it look kind of like a sneaker. I did not see his boat while on land or on my own 18 foot yacht.

This afternoon I chatted with my good friend who caught the most marlin of any female angler in the world last year. She's also a Hokie, '07. She said catching a fish of that size to beat it will be extremely hard to beat. Everyone else doesn't have much confidence. There was another large fish brought in this afternoon though. The marlin fishing off on NC has improved the past several years, particularly in May.

I did get some pullage myself...

Must be nice I spent 4 hours getting waved at by tails that wouldn't eat a dang thing. Even tossed chunked blue crab and mullet at them in frustration

Ha! Well I've barely fished this year and the fishing at the Cape has apparently sucked. It was blowing 25 plus for 3 days straight. I had multiple refusals in bad conditions and this fish just cared to oblige me I suppose

Not sure why MJ didn't enter this year. I also think it was last year? that the biggest one ended up being DQ's because it something took a bite out of it when it was being reeled in.

Fire Whit.

The bite thing happens quite a bit always good for drama

Sounds like you need to convince her to join TKP!

She isn't much of a football fan but did say she wants to come back for a game sometime. All she does is fish and hang out with her dogs.

Haha she's married to my close friend. He can have her. I've got my own keeper

Man threads like these make me miss 3rdGen

Vroom Vroom

Heard from him yesterday. He's living the life and really into smallmouth fishing right now.

Got sent this screenshot from another friend. Thought I couldn't comment on threads anymore since I didn't renew my membership. I'll post an update in the fishing thread. GT Trip from February is the main update and some river smallmouth recently and modified my torqeedo to scoot around rivers skinny.

Can't spell DBU without Bud

Any recommendations on SPF shirts? I am looking for a hooded variety for fishing in the FL Keys later this year.

Duck Camp if you want Bamboo style

I picked up a Duck Camp lightweight hooded shirt of their last call for 40% off today. Nice way to get a trial piece.

I've got one of pretty much any brand you can think of. Bamboo: Duck Camp, or Freefly.

Polyester: dealers choice - I'd get what style you want that you can find on sale, the only real difference is weight but they all breath well enough that they don't get too hot. Poncho makes one thats Poly Cotton and is much softer than the other brands, I like it but it does tend to get smellier than 100% poly.

I just saw a post on bookface that the 920 pound Marlin was painted and made some big ass gyatoku prints and then donated to CMAST, which is the NC State Center for Marine Sciences and Research

There are some bigger fish coming in (as of yesterday) with one being over 700lbs. It will be interesting to see if anyone can get over that 919 mark.

Is coronavirus over yet?

At least they gave the big marlin to scientist to study and do tests on.
