It's about time TKP had a modern editor. I hope this will simplify a lot of the embedding and formatting issues on the site. Please share any feedback you have. FYI: You can toggle your editing experience in your user profile. Unless you know what you're doing, use the visual mode, but it shipped with a toggleable HTML mode.
More site updates are coming. And I'm thinking I might open a feature requests thread. And other good news, the first $9.99 / monthly subscriber is in the books.

A la reddit posting, surrounding in *asterisks* to indicate italic, double **asterisks** for bold, [brackets] (followed by parentheses) for links and such.
But I don't really mind the RTF interface. Haven't tried to see if keyboard shortcuts such as ctrl+I or ctrl+B work (on mobile now)

In the past, it would've really been nice bc you had tags like <blockquote>, and there was a start/finish, so if i was trying to quote on mobile I'd need to:
Add the formatting tags
Position my text in between
Move my curser to the right spot
Paste it (without my curser moving)
But now it's wayyy less of a PIA. Everything is one click. I don't need to highlight text to ensure that the right words are formatted correctly.
also, on a desktop browser cmd+B and Cmd+I work for bold/italicize shortcuts.

Please don't do this. I like to sometimes use asterisks for *emphasis*; I don't want them auto-converting.

Can you change the "N" hot key with the "M" hotkey so it's easier to smash holding the phone with one hand?
I just deployed the keyboard shortcut for hyperlinking and other common ones.

I love the idea of the change as it helps a lot with things that were some times weirdly complex (like finding the actual image url at some imgur)
But on mobile the post is largely the options menu and not the typing so its a big cluttered. Don't change it for me cause ill probably get used to it, but its my first thought.

Lord it's hell to get old. I don't understand a word of this stuff.
As someone who is getting older, pulled a hamstring by merely squatting down, and is struggling to walk up stairs, I feel every word of this. 😂 Though I was hoping this would provide a simpler and more intuitive experience. Overall it should make it easier for less technical people to post gifs and Twitter embeds.
OK. I do know what a gif is but don't ever use them or see the need. As for twitter and all that stuff, my one and only social media presence is right here. I am below the "less technical people" level, and if I need to learn something for reasons I agree are important, I will do so, but mainly I'm just not interested in computer stuff and my phone is for texting and phone calls, period. My friends make fun of me for my near Luddite ways, but TKP fills the gap in my Hokie news I used to plug with local radio and the Hokie Huddler when I lived around the 'Burg and I am glad I found the site.
In other words, happy for one and all for your improvements, they seem like a hit. Maybe someday I'll avail myself of the more technical side of life and join the modern world, but the shorter my life becomes, the less time I want to spend with it.

Im a tweener. I can't keep up with some of the stuff discussed for sure. I was about to ask for a legend for all the new symbols above the Add a New Comment section (know some, but not all by visual alone).
What I did this morning was go to the Add a New Comment section and hit the icons one by one and based on what appeared, was able to decipher all.

I had gotten used to the previous system, but would still have times where the formatting would be off and that, combined with fat fingers, could be frustrating on the phone.
I must be dumb... I can't figure out how to remove/edit a gif and/or add any text to the post after you've inserted it.

Clark was told he was impacted in the middle of a broadcast. They went to commercial and when they came back he was gone.
That is absolutely wild to me. IMO, that is an example of extremely poor leadership. Unless he did or said something egregious (like, sexual harassment or racism, which, from my understanding, that is NOT the case) you don't just yank someone in the middle of a broadcast. That's some real SDE right there.
A third party news outlet told ESPN that they were going to break the news soon of the impacted employees....so that is why it was rushed to get Clark off so they could tell him first
Yeah their reasoning for the last part wasn't so terrible. Makes sense they didn't want him to find out via twitter or people texting him.
But still you'd think you keep that kind of info under control and tell Clark first rather than having it leak to outside reporters

I stand by my statement. It's a reflection of poor leadership. A well led organization doesn't have to rush to fire people before they find out via leaks to an outside organization.
Pro athletes get pulled mid inning or mid game when traded, so why not tv personalities. He was terrible to begin with so I'm not sad to see him get the boot.
This is an interesting point. I don't know if it's a fair analogy or an apples to oranges comparison. I imagine most pro athletes at least know there's a possibility that they could be traded in the middle of a season (or a game, perhaps). Even so, in those cases, they're not straight up losing their jobs - they're being traded to a different job. I think it would be more akin to Clark being told that he's going to start in a similar role for FoxSports instead of ESPN on Monday of the next week. I don't know if that was a known or realistic possibility for Clark before it happened. Was he even remotely aware that he could be yanked mid-broadcast? Seems unlikely.
I also think, regardless of your opinion of Clark and whether he was good or bad at his job, that he should at least be given the respect to finish his day at the studio. Being fired mid-broadcast is not a good look, IMO (unless, as I stated earlier, there was some egregious act that justifies immediate action to remove him, like, if he punched one of the other members on set, or something).
Now, I say all of this without actually knowing anything about the guy. I don't think I've seen a single clip of him anywhere. I haven't watched ESPN in probably 15 years (I stopped watching years ago when I got fed up with the nonsense from Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith) so I know very little about the product or the personalities.

I've thought about that as a feature from time to time over the years. That, and removing anonymity from the turkey leg votes. I don't know that either is really necessary, though. I assume most folks on here are like me and they'll read their comment replies. If I want to get someone's attention, I'll reply to a comment of theirs.
Perhaps the top tier of TKP Club could get access to one or both of those features.
The anonymity on the votes... I think that would introduce ww3 on here. I remember when I had upvotes and downvotes separated and pitchforks came out when some had a 20:1, up:down ratio, or a lone downvote. 😂
That still happens if a post starts at like -1 or -2. Chaos would ensue if we could see who did that
Yeah, I remember that. There was still anonymity in the votes, even when they were separated. I think the issue wasn't the delta between UVs and DVs, so much as the people DVing comments were still anonymous.
If people know that they'll be "seen" for the votes they leave, they may think twice about leaving a downvote. I personally use my downvotes much more sparingly than my upvotes. I don't mind handing out upvotes like candy on Halloween but I really only DV things that merit a DV for violating the CGs. I think more people would take this tack if they knew that people can see their votes.
That said, it could absolutely lead to retaliatory DV spamming, so I get why you keep it anonymous. On the other hand, I'd be willing to bet a fair amount of money that people guess who they get a DV from and then spam them with DVs anyway. And, what's worse, that someone who didn't DV something is now catching a bunch of strays as the wrongfully accused. But, if you know that everyone can see your DV, you probably only DV something that warrants it, for fear of retaliation. Likewise, if someone DVs your post and you go on a retaliation spree, everyone will see that and I think this community would react accordingly.
In the end, I don't think making DVs public would induce ww3 on here. It would be TKPs version of mutually assured destruction, and IMO, that would deter people from DVing posts unnecessarily.
I don't actually want this feature, but yearly superlatives would be pretty funny.

I personally don't think we have a DV'ing problem on the site. Most DV's i see are generally warranted or you can obviously tell it was a fat finger/accidental. I'm fine with anonymity unless things get out of control and usually the mods are on top of threads that are heading down those roads.
Plus, I know that downvotes happen due to scrolling on phones. I've seen where I myself accidentally dropped a -1.
This may be different now that non subscribers can post again, but I know going plaid is extremely difficult now, so maybe a "Plaid Vote" propagates when a post reaches a certain # of up-votes, so we vote for whether it's Plaid worthy.
It's also the offseason.

Edit: Interesting. When you view it as single comment, it also doesn't have a link to the thread or the carat that links the comment replied to. There was no way to go to the thread other than knowing what thread it was originally in.
I think it could be useful for when people are responding in a long line of thread replies and it's difficult to track who's referring to who and what comment.
You know that the little carrot, after the # and before the toggle button, of a comment takes you to the comment they are replying to, right?

Having a notification on the home page (a la the number on the comments tab for responses) might not be too intrusive and could be useful.

I'll second the toggle feature if this is implemented. I probably wouldn't use the @ feature but I can see how it could be useful for some.

I wouldn't mind an @ function, I think it would fit in seamlessly here and do well.
One thing I would love to see implemented is a Reddit style "Continue Thread" option, at least on mobile, for when a subthread gets to about 10 or so nested replies to the point where the comments are unintelligible on mobile devices. On those really long subthreads like that, I stop following because it's literally too much work to do so on my phone
I want to second the "Continue Thread" option like Reddit. Would definitely help for mobile users when threads get down to a character width of 1 or 2 characters. Could also prevent the whole "lets see how thin the comments get" thing that pops up once in a while. That tends to only happen with newer users that haven't seen it before.
Yep once it gets to that point mobile users really can't read the comments anymore. Just something to allow us to be able to continue reading follow-up comments when it gets to that point would be incredibly helpful
I also second (third?) the reddit-style continue thread option. Or at least a way to click on a comment and have that comment and all comments below it (as in replied to and the replies to those, not below on the screen) to roll up. That's one thing I love about reddit, is that I can read the top level comment, and if I don't care about replies to it, I can click on it and it rolls all the replies up and the next top-level comment is displayed. This works for sub-comments as well.

Damn, I literally thought ^ was a carrot because if you used your imagination it looked kinda like a carrot. If I have ever seen caret spelled out it had to have been in middle school and that period of time has long been purged from the memory banks.
Could be helpful. I have had people from here dm me on reddit, twitter to tell me about a meltdown in a thread. Topher would text me every now and again about something i may have missed.
Even just @mods sending a bat signal to the four of us could be useful
