The Washington Redskins' chief marketing officer said Tuesday that he expects attendance "in the mid-40s" for Saturday’s Virginia Tech-Cincinnati game at 79,000-seat FedEx Field.
Mitch Gershman blamed lagging ticket sales, in part, on the Hokies' "unfortunate" loss at Pittsburgh two weeks ago. Neither Tech (3-1) nor Cincinnati (2-0) is ranked in this week’s Associated Press poll.
Gershman said more than 50,000 tickets have been distributed for Saturday, many to Redskins premium seat and suite owners who receive them as part of their season package. That group accounts for many of the tickets available on the secondary market, according to Gershman.
Before reading that, I expected at least 40,000 Hokies would show. (I also expected most of the readers here would attend.) If you're within a 4 hour drive, and not coming, how come?

I'll be there
But supposedly we have awful tickets in "the cave" where you cant even see half of the field.... got em cheap though so may just move up to nosebleeds if there's a better view.
What is considered "the cave"?
200's. You are up and under an overhang.
Its like row 17 and higher in the 200s section.
They tried to cram as many seats in the place as possible so the overhang's are too close to the top rows. This was a pretty good article explaining it.

Thanks for the article. Apparently my seats suck haha
Thinking the same for mine.
we had talked about going all summer
but then we got a deal on tix for last week that was too good to pass up. plus we have a baby and dont want to wear out grandma and grandpa as babysitters.
Kidz.
We stopped going because of kids. We did one year with season tix after our first born, but when you add in 6-7 games @ 8-10 hours each time, that's asking a lot of grandparents.
Now, with 3 kids, we maybe can get to one game a year. Frankly, we prefer to tape the games, do the Saturday stuff we need to do with the kids and house and watch the game in a 2 hour block later. Cheaper, no weather, no traffic.
Attending games, to me, is a young mans game and an old mans game. I did games from 18 until 31 and I hope to do them again from 45 until I die. That period in between.....not much.
Bill Roth was on 910AM Yesterday
He does a weekly report here in Richmond with Yahoo! Sports Radio 910's Wes McElroy and was asked this same question. The always optomistic Roth thinks that number should shoot up but also attributed lagging sales to four things: Pitt loss, Big East team, both unranked, AND tickets were initially WAY overpriced. Bill said the tickets for the game Saturday were more than when we played them in the Orange Bowl initially ranging from 52.99 to 175.00. You can get them for as low as $30 now so I think there may be a lot of last minute attendees.
Add to the fact that it is Fed EX Field
The parking situation at Fed EX is atrocious as well. I have horrible memories of waiting 3 hours to exit the parking lot after painful losses to USC and BSU. After the USC game, we even decided to wait it out and tailgate, but noooo.... Management there told us to pack it up and get in line with everyone else. What a cluster... you know.
the benefit of a half-capacity crowd
is that getting out of the parking lots should be much quicker...
Well said
The problem is that Dan Snyder is a greedy, greedy man.
On another note, does anyone know if they will be selling beer for this game? If my memory serves me correctly, they sold beer at VT-BSU
USC 2004
we drank FedEx dry by the start of the 3rd quarter.
They did sell beer at VT-BSU
It's a pro stadium, which means beer sales are allowed.
Ouch
Well 40,000 isn't great.
I wish mamaschaef and I could go, but with the little uns in tow (3yo and 3mo) it just isn't possible. I'll be watching from the Noke and you may hear me up in FedEx!
Go Hokie!
could be more
last week they expected about 35K for the JMU/couchburners game and about 10K more than that ended up attending.
What I am going to take away from this.
HA!
Took my oldest who was 8mo at the time to the VT v BSU game...that was alright, except for that fact that I had to carry him back to the car (which was about 2 miles because we got turned around, or lost).
Wish I could go
Being from NoVa, I'd love to go but we live in Charleston, SC AND have 2 little kids, yikes! If you're ever in Chucktown for a game weekend, though, there are 2 bars downtown where Hokies get together. The Brick on East Bay St is owned by Matt Quillen, former Hokie Bird, and has a game-worn VT uniform from the Boise Game framed on the wall (jersey, pants, helmet, shoes, the whole shebang). Also, THEY SELL RAILS. The Mellow Mushroom on King St reserves the upstairs for Hokie fans, too and has awesome food & drink specials for the donners of O&M. We were there for the Bowling Green game and they had $2 pints of RJ Rockers Pumpkin Ale (not my thing, but I saw some readers are into pumpkin beers). It was also a great place to take in the Miami game last year. LT3 + 4&1+TD=Bedlam
For those of you going to the game Saturday, have fun! I don't want to generalize an entire fanbase but
1. They are from Ohio
2. The Cinci fans in front of me at the Orange Bowl were pricks (they got in my face when they scored first annnnnd... they didn't score for the rest of the game)
3.They are from Ohio
Go Hokies!!!
so you dont like people from ohio?
I like Hokies from Ohio
http://theineptowl.com/2010/10/08/nationwide-poll-ohio-deemed-worst-state/
A guy who lived down the hall from me in Miles told me he would root for the Buckeyes over the Hokies if they played (and they will in a few years). Just sayin
Sadly
It doesn't surprise me that the guy down the hall said that....Ohio State Football is all the Ohio natives have unless they want to be rebels and be Michigan fans. Sad that he wont root for his own school.
The article was pretty funny as well.
I will be rooting for VT even though i will have graduated from tOSU hopefully by then.
Moving over to Charleston next month!
See you downtown. Can't wait to watch in the same time zone with some other Hokies.
i'll be there because i feel it is my duty, and because it is an opportunity to visit friends in the area. but honestly.... watching us play (maybe lose) to cincinnati in a half-empty FedEx does not excite me. *derp*
Sitting this one out
Had the opportunity to get cheap, decent tickets. Decided not to go after attending Pittsburgh, and realizing that every time I go to an away/neutral site/bowl game, we lose. I'm currently at 0-5 (USC, LSU, BSU, MICH, PITT).
be fair to yourself...
pretty much every tech fan has a losing record at neutral site/bowl games....
Will be there
I don't care for FedEx, but it's an easier drive for me than getting to Blacksburg.
I'll be there
but I am just as excited to stay with and see friends as I am about the game itself.
Cincinnati "Home" Game
From:
http://espn.go.com/blog/bigeast/post/_/id/37023/cincinnati-hits-the-road...
"Cincinnati will try as best as it can to make the home field of the Washington Redskins feel like home. The scoreboard graphics will belong to Cincinnati, along with all the other graphics on the electronic boards around the stadium. The field will also be painted with Cincinnati logos, with the Redskins logo at midfield."
I wonder if that means no Enter Sandman.
Band
The UC band is also coming to the game.
http://marchingvirginians.music.vt.edu/schedule.html
According to the above link, the MVs will not be there.
Not sure how I feel about that.
Saving Money
The band is currently planning a 1-2 night trip to Clemson instead. Going to FedEx for Boise was a nightmare on many levels.
Yes but the decision to the send the mvs should be a no brainer if the other school's band is going. Athletics has the money; they just choose not to spend it for whatever reason.
I was in the MVs for the USC game and it wasn't that bad.
New Building
Yeah, I was in it for the Boise State game and it wasn't so good. The big thing is the new building though for them to have as a home. If I had to guess, athletics will show their support with a donation to that. Doesn't make a lot of sense not to send them, but oh well.
We did a day trip for USC, left early in the morning, and got back in the middle of the night. We even had to play a mini concert for a bunch of high roller alumni outside of fairfax. I don't want to hear the whining about how the logistics sucks or whatever. You all are in college; you will live. This is for the team. You should WANT to go.
Not going because of the parking situation there.
It sucks.
There's always the metro if dont want to deal with parking, also less people going should help
All of you realize**
if you have the opportunity to go this game, GO. tough it out! ok, the parking sucks, SUck it up!! score those cheap seats!
Realize that during the offseason ALL WE CAN THINK ABOUT is FOOTBALL! Don't take that for granted! A lot of you have lost faith because of Pitt. Just sack up, buy your ticket, and go!! You not being there is one less voice for the Hokies!
/lame rant over
Traffic Concerns
While I am a diehard Redskins fan, and hate everything that devil owner stands for I think you guys are overreacting with the parking/traffic concerns. Its a Saturday game, not a Monday game like Boise. 495 is fucked during the week because of all of the commuters. On Saturdays it isn't as bad. Yes, getting out of the stadium is awful, but usually when you get out of the immediate area around the stadium it moves pretty move.
And to somewhat reflect what JerseyHokie said, I was told in 07 when I went to the NCAA basketball tournament by a Southern Illinois middle aged fan "GO TO EVERY SINGLE EVENT YOU CAN, IF YOU DON"T YOU WILL FUCKING REGRET IT"
(Think Billy Madison talking to the porker to never go to high school)
I still live by this.
I realize some people just can't make it, but if you can suck it up and go to the game.
Just another opportunity to see a team not named the Redskins win in Fed Ex Field.
The best stadium to get out of is Miami. shoot you right onto the turnpike
I'm going
There are 9 of us leaving from the big city of Culpeper and meeting more friends there, so we should have a pretty big tailgate going on.
im going no matter what.
Party bus style
from Arlington with about 25+ Hokies!! Go Hokies
We have
about 80 on 2 buses rolling from Arlington so we have done our part
