OT: 55 colleges under investigation over handling of sexual violence complaints

(CNN) -- Federal investigators are checking whether 55 colleges and universities illegally handled sexual violence and harassment complaints, the U.S. Department of Education said Thursday.

Such investigations have long been known, but this is the first time that the department has released a list of all such probes currently under way.

The list includes colleges and universities in 27 states and in the District of Columbia.

Really glad to see VT wasn't on that list...that other school though...smh

Onward and upward

There are a couple I'm not surprised to see on there, the two biggest being Florida State and Penn State given their recent issues with the subject.

LOLUVA

FSU, anOSU, UVA pretty much the schools to be expected on this list

Regardless of the universities involved, this is disappointing to see. As a woman who grew up playing sports, I understand and appreciate the initial motivation for Title IX. But I must say I don't agree with how it's played out in the modern day.

Live for 32. Ut Prosim. Let's Go, Hokies.

Not all schools are on there for sports related issues. My current school doesn't have sports teams but made the list for something that occurred off campus. Regardless, sexual assault and abuse of women is unacceptable

West Virginian by birth, Hokie by choice

On roughly that same note, I wonder how many colleges have had cases go unreported because of the efforts of admins/head coaches eager to keep their schools/athletic programs out of the news media?

The comments on this thread should all read as follows:

1) "Wow, I can't believe that there are 55 schools on this list."

2) "I'm really glad Tech is not on this list."

That's it. /rantover
