According to Mark Berman, Marshall Wood has left the basketball program but will remain at VT as a nonplaying student to focus on school. It's an unexpected loss for the team, but,I guess that will give Buzz an extra scholarship to bring in his own players and make Tech more competitive in the ACC and the national stage.

If correct, that's unfortunate; but I can respect him focusing on classes and thus, his future.
Marshall Wood is a great Hokie. Best of luck to him in his future endeavors.
Kid 'n play haircut will be missed.
Good Luck to Marshall Wood. He's still a hokie!
I think that Wood realized that basketball under Williams was going to be a much more significant commitment regarding time and tone which he might not have been comfortable giving. This may have been what was best for both parties here and indicating he is not transferring tells me that basketball wasn't where his heart was at. I would expect this scholarship to wait to be filled until next season, so Will Johnston might get another "free year" since I imagine Buzz will want to keep at least one of these for the 2015 class.
Great for Will Johnston, and I am kind of happy that we are keeping a couple of open scholarships so we can really pull in some good players next year as well.
I think there will be some other players who won't realize Buzz's demands for commitment until practice begins. Woods made a decision while in school that some players refuse to make even after their career is already buried. Marshall will hopefully graduate & be productive for a long time. Hopefully he will also take away some fond memories from his playing days.
Call me crazy, but if we have scholarship players leaving the team because they are worried about too high a level of commitment and tone, what does that say about where our program was with JJ?? No offense to the guy since I know his motto was "bring your track shoes".
I would put Buzz Williams in the top five coaches in the country in terms of expected commitment so realizing that Buzz is at a much higher level than JJ was isn't necessarily as big a knock on JJ as you might expect. Buzz boot camps are no joke. I would put them above a normal Marine workout but below Seal training in terms of extreme workout regimen. He expects his kids to be able to sprint for 40 minutes non stop if necessary. Either way, the team we end up with will be the better team once they are through it and on to the season, be it with eight walk ons or three depending on scholarship players.
This rumor is indeed true
Depending where he is in academic studies could he be setting up a Brewer situation. Graduate early without thought of transferring credits in mid stream and pick up two years of eligibility without sitting out a year for transfer?
He could be, but whatever he does once he has left the team, really wont impact us so if he manages to do it, so be it. I wont begrudge him wanting to play the sport somewhere else.
On Wood I'm pleased with the level of maturity he handled the situation with and that unlike some he is doing the smart thing and using the opportunity to better himself with a fine education, and to prepare himself for the future in a realistic manner something I feel has been forgotten with the way college athletics have become. Personally it pains me to see student athletes crying that the scholarship isnt enough and that they should get paid. That to me hurts because it shows the players aren't smart enough to realize just how valuable the scholarships are and that with that they have the entire university at their fingertips and all it takes is effort and they can be set for the rest of their lives with a good degree if sports dont work out as planned. I'm glad that he is taking the time to look after his future and making a mature decision for someone his age and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

Sure was a quick focus on his academics.
He apparently didn't consider the fact that his basketball scholarship was dependent on him actually being on the team.
Yep, Mom and Dad probably had a discussion with him about that and made him change his mind.
I do find it interesting that its his AAU basketball coach who is breaking this news instead of Marshall or his parents.
Looks as if Marshall Wood wont be going far, as it appears he will sit out a year and then join the Richmond Spiders.
