OT: Draft Thoughts? Steals and Reaches

Ok so what's TKP's opinion of the first round so far. Favorite pick, steals, reaches and fullers. #AlloftheFullers

Any ideas as to who Houston will take with the 1st pick in 2nd round.. They have no QB but the only decent one left is Carr or Garrapolo... sucks to suck i guess.

Anyways being a Browns fan.. (insert QB jokes here) I was very happy with the way our draft went. We got a 2015 1st rounder and a 2015 4th rounder for Sammy Watkins.. and only moved back 5 spots. That is highway robbery IMO.

Gilbert is a good db, still have yet to see much of him but lets be honest Cleveland is ready for Johnny Football!!!

Darqueze Dennard to the Bengals is my steal, the dude is a beast. Biggest reach IMO is the Saints trading up for Cooks when he probably would have been there at 27. My Panthers picking Benjamin at 28 is a nice pick as well. Fuller went right in the area I thought he would.

I was glad to see him go because I was tired of ESPN playing it "Jonny Football at the Opera".
I got sick of seeing his face and hearing the words Jonny Football. the drool and the tears were making the floor behind the desk slippery.
Ray Lewis was the most insightful and least in love with him. He got a lot of the pick predictions correct and had no problems bucking the trend.

Let me reiterate so it's clear, I was glad to see him go because even my wife was telling the ESPN analysists to please just go get a short time hotel room.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

My favorite part was when ESPN read tweets telling them to stop talking about Jonny Football and they proceeded to talk more about Jonny Football.

He's no good to me dead.

That's because they have the technology to measure in real time viewer engagement to what they see on the screen. And to no ones' surprise, there is a lot more engagement when you point the camera at a polarizing figure.

Reality has a mighty pimp hand.

Sounds like the exact reaction my wife and I had. I was really sick of the conversion from NFL Draft to "The Johnny Manziel Reaction Show." I was most upset at the thought of some young man, a talented football player, achieving his dream by getting selected for the NFL, only to show some other guy sipping water. Focus on the guy who deserves the spotlight in that moment.

"Exit light..."

Yup, immediate reaction was always to him with a water bottle and his agent looking at his cell phone with a dumbfounded facial expression.
Didn't even interview Fuller.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I've always been a fan of Ray Lewis, that guy is incredible. He was awesome arguing with Gruden over the Texans picking damn JF. Sick of that dude.

It was kind of amusing after during the top 10 since I was with an aTm alum and they had the same dumbfounded look Manziel had. Then it just got silly. At least I took solace in the increasing "Not surprised Manziel is still available" poll results they did after every pick.

Houston would get a steal by drafting Logan Thomas in the second round. They need a QB who can compete with Luck, Bortles, and Locker.

I had a major idiot moment and thought, "Luck plays in Indy, duh." Then I realized you meant to compete in the division, lolz.

The best-case scenario there would be Logan erasing any memory of Schaub with the Texans.

Trick Question. Kyle Fuller is a steal regardless of draft position.

damn, beat me to it. +1

If I were a GM, I would use a second round pick on drafting rights to any future children Mrs. Fuller plans on having. #FutureFullers
Can you do that? I guess it would be more of "Dibs" situation.

FOSTERS: Australian for defense

You can bet VT did that already for college level.

You used to be able to draft futures. There was a program on the NFL network about 64 draft I believe it was. The Cowboys drafted Staubach. I think I spelled that right. He had to go into the Navy. So they had to wait. But they took him on a futures pick.

Didn't the Cowboys also do that back in the 80s with Carl Lewis, just in case he decided to play football?

Kyle Fuller at 14, and not 1, is my steal. Bears got gifted 13 times in a row.

Outside of Kyle Fuller, the Bills for me, Sammy Watkins is going to be awesome with EJ Manuel. I cannot wait. Some Bills fan say we gave up too much for him, but I don't think so, I think he's going to be awesome.

Yeah, I forgot where EJ was until it was mentioned on the show.
They work well together and suspect that trend will continue.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Yeah but you essentially traded 2 first round picks for him, and unless you think that Sammy is going to be THE difference maker for that team, and an immediate difference maker, the Bills traded 2 high picks for one guy.

Do I think Sammy is a great player? Yes. Do I think he will immediately help any team he plays for? Of course. Do I think he is good enough to trade possibly 2 Top 10 picks for him? No

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

In the 9th spot we weren't able to get an immediate difference maker, not at all. At the 4th spot once Bortles went to Jacksonville he was there. Now the guys that went after Watkins they weren't immediate difference makers. Who knows what will come out next year. Do I think he will be a difference maker? Hell yeah. I think he'll be great. We had to do something. Our defense was coming on last year but our offense was 28th in the league with the second fewest touchdowns. Is that worth two first round picks for a guy who is quick, can catch the ball in traffic, can jump, plays taller than his height, give his all? Hell I'll take it. He's a blue chip guy we haven't seen in Buffalo in years.

It was a great move for both teams. Buffalo needed a big time WR for sure and that is what Sammy is. Browns were going to take Bortles if he was available at 4. (friends a scout for the browns- new the big board) Minnesota tried to trade up as well but Browns had a hunch Manziel would be taken so they went with the bills.

"I'm high on Juice and ready to stick it in!" Whit Babcock

Not a single difference maker?

Kyle Fuller was available, for starters... Secondly, there were numerous OLmen available that would have helped keep EJ Manuel off his rear end in the future, which would have helped, not to mention the run on defensive backs that hadn't even begun, yet. And if you're talking receiving difference makers, hell... Eric Ebron was still available, and he's going to be an elite TE for a long time in a league that is quickly evolving towards a dependence on that position.

Now ask yourself, would you rather have Sammy Watkins or Kyle Fuller/Eric Ebron/Odell Beckham Jr/etc AND a 2015 Top 10 pick? As I said before, I think Sammy Watkins is a great player, but you were much better off pocketing that pick and holding onto the 2015 #1. There were too many high quality players still available.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Hey I'm a browns fan and that was highway robbery for us.

"I'm high on Juice and ready to stick it in!" Whit Babcock

I'm not slighting Kyle. I'm talking about on the offensive side of the ball.

As far as the OL the Bills made it a point to say that they wanted to give EJ as many weapons as possible. Which is another reason that they got Watkins. I don't believe that Ebron gives as much dynamic as Watkins does. Watkins was the MVP of the Orange Bowl among many other things.

But the point is that for the past (I lost count) number of years the Bills haven't seen the playoffs. So we sit here and play this game where we keep collecting picks and we keep playing this rebuilding game where we sit in the bottom of the AFC East but yet draft 8th or 10th and not near the "elite" section. Still not getting the kind of players that can break open a game. Is sacrificing a draft pick worth the roll of the dice to make the playoffs?

No way, it was a decision that had to be made. Ebron is a good TE but for him to really be useful he needed to be the 2 or 3 option like he will be on the Lions. Watkins is the do it all guy, speed, catches ball at highest point and good route runner.

"I'm high on Juice and ready to stick it in!" Whit Babcock

I'd agree if WR was the one missing piece you had. But I just don't see one WR as putting you over the top to make the playoffs. Too many other issues that would have been better addressed with 2 Top 10 picks instead of going for it all on one.

If you're someone like Carolina, where you're really just a WR away from potentially getting to the Super Bowl, I see the trade as making sense. But not for someone who's still in the middle of a rebuild looking at another high draft pick next year as well. Its very similar to what Atlanta did to get Julio Jones and what New Orleans did to get Ricky Williams. You sacrifice the future to win now on a team that's not prepared to win now. In the end, you get the player you want, but you end up doing more harm than good and it takes even longer to correct the mistake.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

But I don't see how on the offensive side of the ball that WR isn't what we need? When you look at what we had, the fact that we had Spiller and Jackson at RB with Manuel at QB and a line that is coming together, and the issues with scoring touchdowns, I find it hard to believe that giving us that threat at offense isn't what we need to push us over the top. I'm not afraid to say that I'm happy with the defense I think it's coming along well, I'm more than ecstatic with this pick.

Last I checked Kyle Fuller will get his fair share of offensive plays...right after he intercepts the ball and scores a TD with a pick 6.

The proud "V" in Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University spelled out in chest paint.
North Endzone @ 03 Miami.

Besides, no one seems to be mentioning that Khalil Mack....who played his college ball in Buffalo..also was still available when they took Watkins. Mack has the potential to be a Pro Bowler from the OLB position for years. Has the speed to rush the passer as an end, but also the coordination to cover the slot/TE if needed. He would have instantly started above Keith Rivers and would likely compete with Alonso for team tackle leader. The Bills lack of a second threat rushing the passer from the linebacker position really hurt them last year. Even with the signing of Brandon Spikes to secure the ILB position, OLB was a position of need for you.

Wide receiver, while Watkins is a premiere talent, wasn't as much a position of need considering as soon as you drafted Watkins, you traded away your two time pro bowl wide receiver who has had three 1000+ yard receiving seasons up until last year, when he still caught 52 balls for 600 yards in just 12 games. Watkins is better than Stevie Johnson but be aware that as part of the trade to the 49ers, the Bills agreed to eat almost $11 million in salary cap space for Johnson over the next two years so Watkins is going to cost you another first round pick and $11 million in cap space over the next two years.

I agree, I read the details on the Bills trade and went crap there goes next years draft. Watkins is good, but this is the deepest WR draft in years.

I'm a lifelong Broncos fan and was pleased that we picked up a CB (even if I had never heard of him). We didn't need to make a splashy first round pick, and we got what we needed.

But if anyone is looking for a humorous read today, check out the hashtag #beforeManzielgetsdrafted on Twitter. Hilarious.

Dude those were great. I love those. Nothing like that snot nose punk getting his

Another Broncos Hokie? Awesome. I really wanted us to take Roby there. He's got some off field issues, but last year he was considered top 15 talent. I have faith our coaching staff can turn this into a slam dunk pick.

Would I have preferred Fuller? Duh. But I'm really glad he didn't fall that far, and Roby should be solid.

Lots of risk given his injury history, but the Pats pick of Easley could end up being the steal of the draft if he stays healthy.

The Rams got a steal when they picked up Aaron Donald. Their Dline is going to be scary good

@CaptKirkVT10

Couldn't agree more!
Donald is 285lbs and ran a 4.6 forty. Had the top number of bench press reps at the combine.
Apparently, Greg Williams, the Rams D coordinator (and Chase Williams father), told the Rams to pick him because Chase told his Dad that the Rams needed to pick Donald because he was a beast! Chase' roomate is a Hokie OL (not sure who), and he said that Donald was unblockable.

I know this sounds crazy, but I still think Khalil Mack was a steal at #5. First time I saw him, like most, was against anOSU (my wife's from Ohio, I watch hers, she watches mine; she loves the Fullers), and he is a beast. Coming from a football program like Buffalo, but still making a name for yourself takes some work. Time will tell, but I think he will be special in the NFL.

I do think the new NFL rules have a requirement that the Browns must take a QB in the first or second round every year.

This year's draft is stacked and any team with lots of picks (St Louis, Browns, Vikes) is doing fine.

I liked the trade-up by Buffalo, even if they paid a lot; Sammy Watkins is a beast and will show it in the next few years in the league. I think EJ's on the clock in Buffalo to make the playoffs, and it wouldn't surprise me if they bring in a FA QB if he doesn't get them to the playoffs in 1 or 2 years.

I thought the Texans would make out like bandits and get Bridgewater, but the Vikes wouldn't let that happen; a great steal IMO, for maybe the best QB in the draft.

I think the Cowboy's pick was a bit odd, considering how bad they were on defense last year, but I can understand that you have to protect Romo.

I don't think any team has done badly yet; the announcers have mentioned that a lot of teams have been addressing needs rather than pick the best player available, which is how a team should draft. Of course the teams picking early have multiple issues and more needs to fill.

As a Ravens fan, I was really impressed with the Browns draft. Getting a solid corner and a qb in the first while also getting a first in next years draft too, that's hard to beat. Thought the Vikings also got a good steal with Bridgewater going 32.

One side note. Based on most peoples reaction to Johnny Manziel, he shit in your cereal every day for the last 2 years. I get it, you think he's over hyped and a party boy, but he was also a damn good and exciting college qb and didn't get in trouble with the law. ESPN over hyping him and showing his dejectedface every 27 seconds was not his choice I assume. Also, sorry if he has indeed shit in your cereal.

Not saying it's keeping your nose clean, but I'd prefer it over assault, DUI's, B&E, sexual assault, and hard drugs just to name a few. My main point was that most of the hate comes from him being over hyped and perceived laziness and blatant arrogance. For all of the attention he received almost instantaneously he could have handled it a lot worse. And yet people everywhere, including here, act like some photos of him partying or other minor things mean he's the worst person in college football.

Offensive Rookie of the Year will be Brandin Cooks. He is a perfect wide receiver for the Saints Fun N' Gun.

Defensive ROY: Aaron Donald. Would have been good on any 4-3 team. Putting him with Robert Quinn and Chris Long? Nasty threesome there.

Just wanted to point out no one from LOLUVA has yet been drafted. Take note #newHoos

Didn't Morgan Moses (LOLUVA) go in the top 10?

He went 2nd in the 3rd round (66th overall) to my Redskins, ironically.

Ah, I knew I must have been hitting the tequila to hard.

Considering there was a full day between between the top ten and Morgan Moses, you must have been hitting it just right.

Although now I have to deal with having a LOLughingstock in my front five,,,

He has bricks for hands and I don't know how well he pass protects as a RB (really important for the Giants), but the guy is a complete monster between the tackles. I think he'll be a force to be reckoned with in the NFC East in the upcoming years if he can stay healthy.

Some of the "experts" are knocking him cause he never caught a ball. But I don't think they ever threw it to him.

See, but there's likely a reason for that.

There is definitely a reason. I watched the RBs section of the combine on NFL Network and I'd guess he dropped probably close to half of his passes, and almost all of the passes that were over 5-7 or so yards. I suppose he could have just been rusty due to BC never using him as a receiving option, but it's definitely something he'll have to work on.

So every Hokie QB to go to the NFL in this millennium has played only for teams with birds as mascotts:

Michael Vick: Falcons, Eagles, & Jets (planes are sometimes referred to as birds afterall)
Tyrod Taylor: Ravens

You just need to creatively find a way to make that team a birds team.

Well, he went to Tampa Bay, and pirates are often associated with having parrots on their shoulders, so that ends up working.

“These people are losing their minds. This is beautiful.”

As much as Hokie fans might dislike them, my 2 favorite non-tech kids in this draft are Vinnie Sunseri and Jordan Zumwalt. I think they are both major sleepers. Sunseri is a smart, coaches kid. Zumwalt is just a nasty, hard hitting middle linebacker. I think he has a lot of versatility and is also very strong at dropping in coverage.

I have no problem with Sunseri. I look forward to Logan getting his revenge on Zumwalt and it's going to be beautiful when it happens.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Here comes the LT Train, Zumwalt...Welcome to the NFL!

z

VHokie

I still can't believe the announcers after the hit Zumwalt put on him. That was pure stupid talking about whether or not it was dirty, Zum had to go out and protect his LBs because LT was running over them. I think that made me more upset than the hit did.

Zumwalt had to protect his Line Backers from our QuarterBack.
Let that ring for a bit.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

If Zumwalt ever gets significant playing time, I can't see his body (specifically neck/head) lasting in the league very long with the way he tackles.

If he continues to hit the way he does, I suspect you'll see some players take on a vigilante role in order to teach him there are bigger boys out there ans they don't appreciate it.
If he doesn't change his ways, someone will change his opportunity to keep hitting high.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Rob Peterson

I agree. With the strong emphasis the NFL has put on concussion prevention and player safety, I would expect Goodell to act, not players if the situation were to arise. Now if this were the NHL... the players might send more of a message (Like Egbert spoke of).

I think the Niners got a steal in getting Hyde in the 2nd round when he was pretty much everyone's #1 rated tailback going into the weekend. I was still left scratching my head a bit since RB is one of our deepest positions (Gore, L. James, Lattimore). I was really excited to see Lattimore start to cut into Frank's carries this season, both to cheer on a guy coming back from a gruesome knee injury in his senior year, and a player that everyone thought was going to be the heir-apparent to Gore.

Either way it shows how Baalke has turned the organization around, loaded up on talent up and down the roster, and has a Belichick-like finesse of working a draft board. For example (I'm not sure what round (2nd or 3rd round) where the Niners traded down, traded back up the very next pick and in the wash of picks essentially traded a 7th round pick this year for a 4th round pick next year and still got the player they wanted with the very next pick. That's how you work a draft board by knowing who wants to trade, what they'll give up, and maneuver in a way that you get a free pick out of the deal.

And unfortunately now begins the drought of football until fall camps begin.

I fill the void with intense online football games against friends and my dad. Of course, the discussions here only make me more excited for what's next.
